Jennifer, Thanks for your information. That's a beautiful gesture. And now that you mention it, bread might be a great blog topic.

Love your post and the blog! It's not strictly a gesture, but I loved being greeted in the Ukraine years ago with a loaf of bread resting on someone's palm-up hands covered in cloth. The offering wasn't the loaf of bread, but peace. (A tradition long before those glasnost days). Everybody present tore off a piece of the bread and dipped it in salt. Eating together, we would never be enemies. I bake bread more often now and give it away, and take it for house warmings &tc. And the experience gained me a fascination with what marvelous and different things people around the world make with flour, water & leavenings. I think that would be the perfect reason for making a round-the-world trip, though I'm sure someone must already have written a book like that. Look forward to more posts, Nancy.

Gestures are so important & we try to accomodate the local customs or mores when traveling. Watch the locals and follow their lead is always good advice. After all, we're there as guests to learn, not to impose. Interesting topic, Nancy.

Great post, Nancy. It's funny and scary how gestures we take for granted and do automatically can be misread in other cultures.
