Founder of mediabistro.com, Laurel Touby is the ultimate cyberhostess. She's literally redefined "community" for those in the media. A Smith College economics graduate, Laurel had a long stint as a journalist for such pubs as Glamour and Business Week. Wanting to meet like-minded friends, the original idea for mediabistro was born, when she decided to host a mixer for media people. Ten people attended that first East Village party in 1993. The parties quickly grew. In 1997, Laurel created a website, which now features job listings, classes, a freelance marketplace and more. Today, 750,000 media professionals have registered for various mediabistro services around the world! Laurel recently made international news when she sold mediabistro for $23 million to Jupitermedia.
In her 1-hour conversation, Laurel talked about how she didn't have a lot of advantages growing up in Miami, why getting a great education can only get you so far, what it took for her to succeed in New York on the level that few women have, her unstoppable passion, and more.
Laurel is forthright, brilliant, and really inspirational.
"Thank you for a wonderful tele-chat. Laurel was so genuine and generous with her advice and suggestions -- and revealed so much. It blew me away! " - Evelyn Duboff
