DONNA SOZIO
Donna Sozio is one of the most interesting women I've ever interviewed - and that's saying a lot! I mean, when was the last time you met a shoe psychic? I met Donna in 2006, when she had just sold her manuscript, and was getting ready for her book to be published the next year.
She radiated such spunk and individuality, and a zest for life, that even before I knew her name, I asked, "What's your book about?" "Well," she replied, "It's titled Never Trust a Man In Alligator Loafers: What His Shoes Really Say About His True Love Potential." That was all I needed to hear. A hit, I figured.
And two years later, Donna, age 35, a former actress and travel journalist - with a BA in Sociology who loves to scuba dive - and has appeared on a host of TV shows - such as The Tyra Banks Show, is now contemplating a movie and TV deal based on the book, gives Shoe Personality Predictions at major book and department stores and her book continues to climb up the Amazon charts. Way to go Donna!
Her interview is fun, revealing and believe it or not - you could find out all you need to know (or not) about the man you're living with!
Q. Okay, how did you become a Shoe Psychic?
A.
I’ve
always tapped into people’s shoes to understand them. For me it’s all
about the qualities their shoes express. In shoe readings, I attempt
to answer the questions, “Why did they choose these shoes?” What is it
about these shoes that serve them? What’s the pay-off for wearing
them… positive or negative? What is it that they are searching for that
these shoes make them feel like they are experiencing? Also, what the
shoe isn’t, is just as important is what it is. Writing Alligator Loafers
was very difficult because I had to quantify what naturally “just
happens” inside my head. I had to stop myself at each step in my
process so I could explain it and what it meant. It was a labor of
love.
Q. So, what’s a Shoe Psychic?
A. It’s
not like after a shoe reading I’ll say, “You’ll have three kids and
marry a man whose name starts with the letter ‘K." It’s more like I
read you. Read your shoes and see if they are congruent. Are you
wearing the right shoes that will get you where you want to be in life?
Different shoes carry different energies and can be your ticket to
ride… or not! I can then give love advice based on what his (or her)
shoes say! Being a Shoe Psychic is all about tapping into energy and
nuance. Is there a better choice in the energetic that your shoes emit
that will serve you even more? I’m a matchmaker between people, what
they want in life and the shoes that have the energy and nuance to take
them there. I love it.
Q. Why did you start reading men's shoes? I mean, most people look elsewhere - if you catch my drift.
A.
I remember in Catholic school, we would get in trouble for wearing
clear nail polish. The nuns would go up and down the rows looking for
anything shiny. But shoes were different. They never seemed to notice.
So I started expressing myself through my choice in shoes. The more I
did this the more I tapped into other people’s shoes to understand what
who they were. I remember the nun’s blue orthopedic clunkers. I still
remember thinking (at a very young age), I never want to turn my back
on beauty like I felt they did wearing such unattractive shoes. Today,
you can still be attractive and comfortable!
Q. And pray tell - give us some examples of what shoes say about men and love?
A.
We
don’t get to choose everything in this life… but for the most part, we
do choose our shoes! So, choose well. A man’s shoes can tell
everything about his habits, hopes, dreams and fears. For example if he
has a pair of hiking boots way in the back of his closet, but in front
are all his work shoes…. you’ll appear totally magical in his eyes if
you suggest going for a hike. How did you know? In Alligator Loafers I
go into all of this in detail. You can “read his mind” by learning
reading his shoes. Life and relationships can become a whole lot easier
through this level of understanding. Another example is if he calls his
work shoes his “monkey” shoes… well that gives you an indication about
how he feels about himself at work – especially in those shoes!
Q. What does your family say about all this? Or, are your "shoe reading genes" hereditary?
A.
Would
you believe I get this from… my father! I’m still floored. About a
year after the book came out he said casually to me, “You know, before
your mother, I remember breaking up with some women because I didn’t
like their shoes.” On the surface, it can seem petty or superficial.
Yet, it’s reading the writing on the wall. People always tell you who
they are… especially through their choice in shoes. You only have to
listen to what they say. You know… I just thought of this. My grandma
on my father’s side used to call me Tootsie Bella. Interesting.
Q. Give us some stories about some of your bookstore shoe readings. You've got to have some quotes or stories from pleased women.
A.
For most of the women I speak to it’s a relief when I confirm from a
shoe reading what they “knew all along” about the guy. One woman did a
Sole Profile on all her past boyfriends. She came over to tell me how
everything made sense now. Especially, why it didn’t work out with a
certain guy whose work boots would run down until his (gasp!) mom would
buy him a new pair. It wasn’t just his shoes. This guy’s mom was always
coming to his “rescue." People’s habits with their shoes are also
indicative of their habits in life! I call this the Soleology Trickle
Down Theory.
Q. Your book is considered a "hit dating" book - do you date? And how has your advice worked for you? What is your shoe type?
A.
Yes,
I date. Dating is certainly an interesting process. Maddening at times
but trusting what I intuitively know about men from their shoes
certainly makes it more fun… if not saner. In my own romantic pursuits,
I always said I wanted a man with sturdy shoes. Not boring… but with an
underlying sense of sturdiness. A while ago I was reading The Book of Qualities.
Under Commitment it read “Commitment wears sturdy shoes.” Aha! That’s
why the quality “sturdy” is so important to me. To me, it represents a
man who can commit. My shoe type is classic with a twist. I love these
handmade shoes from George Esquivel. The foundation is certainly
classic and sturdy, like a wingtip, with a modern edgy twist. Fun. I
know a man who wears these shoes will keep me interested but also make
me feel safe and secure. Frye boots also make me melt. I don’t like
men’s shoes that are too feminine. I want to be the lady in the
relationship!
My own sole advice works for me personally too.
I’m
such an adventure seeker that most of my shoes are wild. Polka-dot…
metallic, bright colors and with frills. I realized one day that I
didn’t have many basics in my shoe collection, which can lay a good
foundation for an outfit. I looked at my lifestyle and realized I too
needed to develop some more “basics” in my life. As I’m adding into my
shoe closet more basics to build on, I’m working on building more of a
foundation in my life as well. I’m learning to create off structure…not
just to jump into the air. It’s nice to be able to do both.
Q. Just curious - what if a guy has all types of shoes in his wardrobe? Does he still fit into a certain love category?
A. Interesting question. Usually there is a pattern in there
somewhere. Are the shoes all bland? Or colorful? What’s the condition?
Even if there are all types of shoes, look for the pattern. That will
tell you more about him than the type of shoe.
Q. What's in your future? Another book, a TV show, the party circuit a trip to a leather factory in Italy?
A. Oooh… the future. I’ve always known the book was a movie.
Even before I finished writing it. It’s just something I knew deep in
my bones. Now, it’s being shopped and has some interest brewing. There
are also some TV opportunities popping up. It all sounds good to me.
What I want most of all is to support people in achieving their dreams
through their choice in shoes. Go 10% out of your normal shoe comfort
zone. Go for color. Go for expression. You choice in shoes can either
accelerate your dreams or keep you right where you are.
Q. Donna, why do you feel you are a Spirited Woman?
A.
I
feel like I’m the luckiest woman in the world. I’m living my dream and
the world is responding. I feel that we are loved beyond measure and
the world gives us these fun playthings (shoes!) to help us express
ourselves to our greatest capacity. As a Spirited Woman, I stretch and
reach for what I know I cannot achieve alone. I need the world and the
world needs me. We need and love each other. I’m a Spirited Woman
because I’m letting the world know who I am. That’s nice.
