SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
Kay Enyart
I
met Kay Enyart on a walk three years ago. Yes, that's right. Very
appropriately we had both signed up for a fashion walk in downtown LA.
Two active women - fashion conspirators, who were up for an adventure.
Little did I know at the time, that Kay would become involved with
Spirited Woman, and that I myself would later start leading downtown
fashion walks!
Kay is a fashionista. One of the most stylish women I've ever seen, with a look all her own, she is a tapestry of colors. A lifelong sewist, connoisseur of fashion, creator of art-couture garments, make-up artist and so much more, Kay recently went back to school post 50 to receive her BA in patternmaking and design.
At a time when most women are thinking of retiring, Kay boldly enrolled in the Academy of Couture Art in Los Angeles. She says, "I have a mentor for the first time in my life, in the form of the Academy's owner/director who saw that I should be teaching at the college level - she recognized that my couture sewing abilities came from a strong self-discipline and a love of beautiful design."
I'm so proud to know Kay and her husband of 25 years, artist and teacher Jack Enyart. They are quite a couple. Their deep passions fill their lives - and that is quite a gift.

Q. Tell us how and when you started sewing.
A. Ever since my mother handed me a needle and thread and
scraps of fabrics to hand stitch doll clothes when I was five years
young, I have had a love of sewing. She was a basic sewist - I learned
the classic rules of construction from her. When I started flexing my
creative independence, she tried to reign me in a bit, as I wanted to
break a few of her rules. We locked horns many times before she gave up
the fight, right around the time I was in high school. I was a full-on
flower child (minus the pot and LSD) with hand embroidered jeans,
exotic gauze blouses, tiered skirts, and wild curly hair!
Q. What is it about fashion and fabrics that fills you with such passion?
A. Fabrics are filled with possibility, just like any raw
material an artist uses. My mother was a hand-weaver and spinner, so
watching the process of textiles being formed with yarns was
fascinating. Textile and costume history is of great interest as well.
The tactile quality of natural fibers (silk, cotton, linen, wool) is
inspiring to my inner designer. I am intrigued by unusual textures and
weave patterns, and take great delight in using couture sewing
techniques to create one-of-a-kind garments.
Q. You come from a family of creatives - what is your family's motto when it comes to creativity?
A.
It was an attitude of willingness to try something new with limited
materials on hand. My parents were from the Great Depression
generation, and they were very resourceful with a small income. My
father was a wonderful carpenter and gardener, and my mother canned our
home-grown veggies and baked the best bread in the world! My sister and
I were encouraged to read, write, paint, sew, embroider, ride horses,
build fences, listen to music, do our homework (!), get in touch with
nature, and develop our inner strengths, all of which gave us good
tools to cope with life's ups and downs.
Q. How has your family's sense of creativity influenced you throughout your life?
A.
My hands, my eyes, my mind are my greatest tools and being willing to
push comfort boundaries keeps me curious and open to possibilities. The
creativity my parents practiced was in building an environment where my
sister and I learned to use simple materials to make functional and
beautiful things that would enhance our appreciation of the
earth'ssabundance.
Q. You've gone back to school post 50 to get your BA degree
in patternmaking and design. What's that like - challenging,
empowering?
A. It is challenging, empowering, and inspiring,
and fun! This plan of action only gelled shortly before I enrolled at
the Academy of Couture Art a year ago. I have a mentor for the first
time in my life, in the form of the Academy's owner/director who saw
that I should be teaching at the college level - she recognized that my
couture sewing abilities came from a strong self-discipline and a love
of beautiful design.
Q. Going back to school in mid-life is very brave decision - why did you decide to do it?
A.
I have taught sewing privately for many years and was writing short
articles about sewing for my website. I was seeing changes in the
home-sewing industry (after a 30 year slump) - a new form of
sewing-for-entertainment was gaining popularity with young women whose
mothers did not sew. I saw great value in adding credibility to my
expertise by getting that degree and expanding my knowledge, plus going
back to school kicked my mind into high gear.
Q. Do you feel that a woman's fashion sense contributes to her self-esteem?
A. Self-esteem is meaningful only when self-image is positive.
We all have innate fashion sense, some more well-tuned than others! You
will always get someone else's opinion, whether you ask for it or not,
so see yourself though your own eyes, not someone else's. Seeing
oneself as a living art-object which requires constant attention,
nurturing, and development is a philosophy that I subscribe to.
Q. When you advise women on fashion what are some of the things you suggest they pay attention to?
A. Get a full-length three-way mirror. Be playful with at least
one small part of your wardrobe (I love patterned socks, wild silk
scarves, and unusual earrings). Be honest about your body type, and
learn how to maximize your best qualities, and minimize your least
qualities. Research and experiment with color, line, shape, and
texture. We can be chameleons and change identities by changing how we
dress to fit different moods and occasions - we can play 'dress-up' and
still be adults!
Q. Kay, why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A.
I am a Spirited Woman (and Muse) because I possess the confidence and
freedom to express myself through my art form - I get to wear what I
create which really jazzes me, and sharing my love of sewing by
teaching feeds my spirit.
