SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
DR. SOPHIA ASAVIOUR
Awhile back I was approached by Dr. Sophia Asaviour to be a guest on her internet show Destiny's Light Radio.
We got to talking and as I heard more about her mission of insuring
peace in the world, particularly for our children, I asked if I could
interview her for my newsletter. I was fascinated by her story.
In 1997, Sophia founded Peace of the World International in Detroit, Michigan where she currently lives. A humanitarian, peace advocate, grandmother, author, a doctor of philosophy and so much more, Sophia started the non-profit organization based on a dream of peace and the fact she wanted to build a "multiplex" for children - a contained place where they could learn, live, share and play in peace.
A decade later her dream is about to become a reality. In 2005,
Sophia visited Kenya. Fell in love with the country, and through a
series of remarkable occurrences, was given land in Huri Hills, Kenya
to build the first "PeacePlex" (a smaller version of a MultiPlex).
Now,
to raise much needed funds and awareness for the project, Sophia will
be walking on a 53-day, 526-mile Road to Peace Marathon, starting in
Nairobi on July 5, 2008 and culminating in Huri Hills in August for the
official groundbreaking ceremony. It is there that she will be bringing
the first eternal World Peace Flame to the continent of Africa.
The winner of the Humanitarian Award for Excellence and International Community Outreach, Sophia plans to move permanently to her home in Nairobi within two years. She truly is a woman on a mission. Dreaming her dreams and acting upon them.
Q. Your friends call you the "voice of peace." Why?
A. I yearn to bring peace to the world because I can see the results of
peace everywhere whenever it does exist. Whether it is in a person's
individual life or in their workplace or family life. You see the
results that people grow. They are happy, they are prosperous, they are
nourishing and willing and open to help others. Those are the results
of peace and when we have that and we bring up our children in that
type of atmosphere we create citizens who are open to the world.
Q. What brought you to Kenya in 2005?
A.
A relationship with a person that I had met at a conference for black
philanthropy in the United States, two years prior to that and that
person was running for parliament and was telling me a lot of things
going on in Kenya and it sounded exciting to me. It sounded like the
kind of the place that might be receptive to creating a Peace of the
World International.
Q. When did you first realize peace was your mission?
A.
When my mother shot my father. When I was 23, my mother shot and killed
my father. I was living in Ohio and she was living in Michigan, and
when I got to Ohio she was in jail and my father was in the morgue. At
that particular time, probably way before, that set me on the road to
peace. Once I got my mind back, I came to forgive my mother and
re-establish myself in terms of my understanding of what we need to do
in the world to bring about peace. One of them is to definitely get rid
of weapons. The other one is the need and the cry of children who are
in harm's way.
Q. What is a PeacePlex?
A. It is a smaller version
of a Multiplex. It actually addresses the needs of the community in
which it is located and primarily we found those are health care needs,
water, and the educational and growth potential of children.
Q. It's gutsy to move from America to Kenya. Tell us a little more.
A.
For me, Kenya is paradise. When I first got off the plane, I only knew
my one friend. But I was introduced to so many wonderful people and I
am very excited about other cultures. Tasting new foods. Experiencing
new dances. All of that. I think people welcomed me because of that
type of attitude. As to why I'm leaving the United States, I'm sort of
disappointed with where we are as a people, as a culture, and as a
nation. I don't know if I would have gone to Paris or Germany, which I
love, if I would have been ready to move there, but I like the idea of
waking up every morning and hearing the chickens. I like the compassion
and the sharing. Some people have nothing, but with that little bit of
nothing they are willing to give you some of it.
Q. How did you become so devoted for peace for children?
A.
Children are innocent. Yet they are the ones who suffer the most from
all of the violence and lack of compassion. For every rule and law and
relationship that we as adults inappropriately make, it always affects
the children. And they have no voice.
Q. What do you need from other women to help support you?
A. Naturally every non-profit organization always needs resources but
as much we need resources we need women who are willing to commit some
time and some energy to projects that we are involved in. Meredith

my associate in the United States is establishing women's programs and
welcomes involvement. We need help in doing fund raising events that
would support the projects we're doing in Kenya, Ghana, and Pakistan.
Help writing letters. Right now with the marathon, I'm looking for
women to sit on these various committees.
Q. Sophia, why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A.
Without it I know I would just crumble and fall. The spirit within me I
have to blame on my ancestors. I know my mother was a very strong
woman. She had a disability but yet she didn't let her disability stop
her from going and participating and doing things that would make me
progress in the world. I call on the energy from all those women of my
past, who have come and left a great mark on the world.
