EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
Can you believe it is already November? A time when holidays are around the corner and lots of parties and fun. Speaking of fun, I've got some exciting news! We are getting ready to form Spirited Woman Groups around the country. I invite you to contact me directly about leading a group in your area or becoming a member. I'd love to have you involved.
Plus, there's more. For the
first time ever, we're hosting a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop in Orange
County, CA on November 10. And, are you ready to Shop 'Til You Drop? On
December 1, in downtown LA's trendy and affordable fashion district,
I'll be leading a walking tour - talk about HUGE bargains and a fun
shopping adventure. You'll be able to do all your holiday shopping with
many laughs along the way. Please join us.
Our November SPIRITED WOMAN Q&A is with Jennifer and Sara Jaqua,
founders of Jaqua Beauty, a hugely successful fragrance and bath and
beauty products company. They're two creative sisters who truly believe
in inspiring women to pamper themselves - both inside and out. Also
this month, our sponsor is Godiva's Secret Wigs - another sensational beauty
company - that sells and creates gorgeous wigs to empower women. Wow! I urge
you to read about the Jaqua Sisters - they're dynamos, and then to
pamper yourself some more with Godiva's Secret.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments, enthusiasm, and friendship. And for those of you new to the newsletter, I'd like to welcome you to our growing numbers. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) in person at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop, SPIRITED WOMAN EVENT, within our SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE, or new SPIRITED WOMAN GROUPS.
The SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women worldwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
Jennifer & Sara Jaqua
Jennifer & Sara Jaqua are rock stars in the bath and beauty industry. Founders of Jaqua Beauty, these two Santa Barbara sisters, are creative dynamos, who in 10 years, have developed a multi-million dollar company, sell over 100 products from Mint Chocolate Lip Whip to Peach Parfait Hydrating Shower Syrup - and a ton of celebrities - Debra Messing, Teri Thatcher, Paula Abdul to name a few - are HUGE fans of the luscious products.
I found out about the Jaqua Sisters because I was given their Pink Champagne Shea Body Butter by one of my dear friends - and not only did I love it, but I loved the fact that these two sisters - both in their 40's - were not only creating fabulous products, but were dedicated to helping women pamper themselves in an "empowering" way as well as donating to a variety of women's organizations - such as battered women shelters, Girls, Inc., and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Both married, Jennifer to a photographer, and Sara to a painter, not only do they run the company, but they raise four boys between them - all under the age of eight. Before starting the business, Jennifer lived in Austin, Texas for fifteen years where she was heavily involved in the music business, and Sara wrote for spa magazines. This business (which they originally started with their sister Allison) gave them the opportunity to join forces and do something together.
This is a Q & A about two sisters bursting with creativity, big plans, and an entrepreneurial spirit. I urge you to read about them.
Q. Tell us about your perfume business in the first grade and
do you credit that as being your first experience with entrepreneurship?
A.
Jennifer - Our cosmetic entrepreneurship started then. It was just fun,
door to door. It was mostly flower water with mashed up flower petals. My
mom always had a flower garden on the side of the house. Sometimes we
would ad spices. So some of the stuff
smelled pretty and some of the stuff was pretty stinky. Before that, we
used to stage little productions - circuses, puppet and magic shows -in
our backyard and charge admission. Owning businesses at a young age
taught us that people will pretty much buy anything. It was a
good experience - if you create something and take it out into the
world - you don't even really need to know that much about what you are
doing.
Q. What was the "aha" moment that got you started in your current business?
A.
Jennifer - We were on a hike in Santa Barbara and since I moved back
from Texas, we really wanted to find a business that we could all do
together. We were hiking and talking about doing something at my mom's
house that night which was a gathering that we did a lot - and we
called it beauty parlor night. We would bring all our favorite mud
masks and nail polishes and foot scrubs and give each other treatments.
All of a sudden, we thought this would be really cool if we created a
kit that had all the stuff you needed in it to get your friends
together. A tool where we'd put invitations in there, instructions
about how to make your house comfy and spa-like. We called it the
"Beauty Parlor Night Kit." That was our "aha" moment and first product.
Q. Why such a love for beauty products?
A.
Jennifer - I think a couple of things. My grandmother was an Avon lady
and my mom had a dressing room with one of those big mirrors with the
three panels and a built-in vanity with lots of drawers just full of
products - perfumes and hair products, not a lot of make-up, and
then my grandmother would send us samples of the little Avon lipstick
and things like that. We used to have so much fun dressing up in her
dressing room with her clothes and her shoes and wiglets. It was so
magical.
A. Sara - We were all tomboys as well that was the thing
about us. We really just liked to be in our go-carts and get dirty. The
feminine part was a whole other world.
Q. How do you come up with your product names?
A.
Jennifer - We base all our product names on our own personal needs and
experiences. For example, our butter creme frosting - we grew
up without sugar - so we love cake and sweets and chocolates - so we've
done our cocoa butter creme frosting. We live on the coast
with a lot of sun and ocean, and our skin gets really dry. So we
created
our body butter with cocoa butter and shea and mango butter and all the
oils in there because we were searching for something that was really
hydrating and nourishing for our skins in a fragrance that we liked.
Q. Who creates the products?
A. Jennifer - We work
with three different chemists. We create it. We give them the basis of
the formula, what we want the ingredients to be, and what we want it to
do. They will create one version based on all of our input and then
they send it to us, then we tweak it and we send it back to them, and
they fix everything that needs to be fixed. And it goes back and forth
like that many times before we finally approve it.
Q. What's it like working together as sisters?
A.
Sara - It's always an evolution - just like our products. We started
not really knowing each other professionally then really just getting
to know one another that way. Pretty much the only way we come together
is in the creative world and when we are out doing personal appearances
or when we're on QVC, or being spokespeople for the brand. Other than that Jennifer does the majority of the day to day stuff
being president, and I concentrate on the creative part. Our paths
cross when we do all the creative meetings together.
Q. Most beauty companies stress beauty from the outside in, how does your company help create inner nourishment?
A. Jennifer - I think we established that at the very beginning.
Creating a tool for women to use to get themselves together. To
encourage that bonding experience with each other. To re-establish
friendship, to create new friendships. When we do spa parties for fund
raisers, everybody puts on a robe. It's not about what kind of clothes
you wear, or shoes you have, or anything like that. It kind of
neutralizes everything.
Q. What do you look for to donate to women's organization and how can our women contact you about this?
A.
Jennifer - Our ideal scenario is anything that is helping women and
girls feel empowered. There is a nationwide organization called Girls,
Inc. and we donated $250,000 of product last year and that was a big
thing for us to get all that product into the hands of young girls. It
was very exciting for us because we still get letters from girls saying
how much they loved their girl gathering kits. It encouraged them to
get their friends together. If women would like to contact us about
donating products, we can be reached at donations@jaquabeauty.com.
Q. What was the one significant lesson your family taught you?
A. Jennifer - I think it is that never be afraid to try
something new. My mom was always doing things that she had no idea how
to do. She would just jump in. Reupholster the couch. Never took a class
- she would just take the fabric
off, make a pattern, and figure it out. She
taught herself how to silk-screen. So we had a good role model with our
mom...and with our dad too. We did a lot of backpacking and a lot of
outdoor adventure stuff with my dad. We learned to be completely
self-reliant but with the support of a family.
Q. Why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A.
Jennifer - I think mainly because most of the time I feel like a
pioneer woman. You know pioneers take the first arrows. I am the oldest
in the family - so from a very young age I've been that person in our
family structure taking the first arrows. Being the first one to wear
high heels. Jeans. First one to get to stay out past nine o'clock.
Whatever it was, I was blazing the trail inside of my family and then
also with the business, being president, it's sort of that same role.
A.
Sara - I think for me it's about having a place where I can create and
being able to have a vision in my head that can come out in the
products. It's very empowering. It definitely makes me feel spirited.
I've been that way my whole life.
THANK YOU JENNIFER & SARA FOR YOUR BOUNDLESS CREATIVITY.
Both Jennifer and Sara welcome hearing from you. Please visit their website at: www.jaquabeauty.com, or feel free to e-mail them at: info@jaquabeauty.com.
