SPIRITED WOMAN QUOTE
"The summer solstice is upon us. It's time to dance in the sun and celebrate the inner divineness that lives within you. Fully and with spirit." - Nancy Mills
----------------
EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
Today is the first of June. I don't know what that means in the
scheme of things - but it's the first of June! I just got back from
teaching two SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops in Alexandria, VA. Dava Money,
who hosted the event went out of her way to make everything special,
and the women were beyond spirited! I think they put something in the
water there. We had a blast. Alexandria is the 19th city I've taught
the workshop in. Wow.
Now to a mid-year update (I'm sticking with the June theme) things
in SPIRITED WOMAN land are really moving. We've got a great "telechat"
upcoming with author Hillary Carlip on June 5, a fantastic special
event, "Meet Downtown Women Artists" at the hip Hive Gallery on June
16, and a wonderful SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop at the intimate and very
cool Black Box Theater in LA on June 30. June's a busy month! And I'm
personally inviting YOU and your 5,000 spirited woman friends to join
us. Or to tell them about us. We've got these great inspirational,
empowering, and fun opportunities - and we want YOU and your friends
involved.
Our June Q&A is with three of the artists - Jillian Suzanne, Marcela Singleton, and Lilli Muller - who will be participating in our "Meet Downtown Women Artist" event. All dynamos, all gutsy, all trend setters, they're changing the face of the LA art scene and making a difference one artistic statement at a time. I loved interviewing them and I love how brave they are - living in downtown is hip yet not very easy. I urge you to read their interview - they're fascinating women with spunk.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments, enthusiasm, and friendship. And for those of you new to the newsletter, I'd like to welcome you to our growing numbers. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) in person at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop, SPIRITED WOMAN EVENT, or within our SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE.
The SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women nationwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
JILLIAN SUZANNE, MARCELA SINGLETON, LILLI MULLER
As many of you know, I like to do different things - for instance take an acting class, when I can't act, or take a painting course, when I can't draw a line. Well, in my Improv class (which I am no longer in), I sat next to this wonderful young actress Suilma Rodriguez, every Saturday for months. We became friends. Let me tell you, she can act. As it turns out Suilma's boyfriend is Nathan Cartwright, the art curator for The Hive Gallery on gallery row in downtown LA. Nathan is a people magnet with a smile as wide as the moon. Thousands of people attend The Hive's openings every month. It's a happening. To make a long story short, I said to Nathan I thought it would be a great idea to have an event there, so that women could find out from other women artists what it was like to live in downtown, show their work, and to talk. He said, "Cool, Nancy, very cool."
So, that is how I came to interview artists Jillian Suzanne, Marcela Singleton, and Lilli Muller. All three will be participating in our upcoming "Meet Downtown Women Artists" at The Hive on June 16th, along with Rula Kaliroi and Annie Terrazzo.
Interviewing them, I found that all of these women are fighters. That they are not deterred by challenges but inspired by them. Living in downtown LA is now trendy, but still very hard. There are still bums on the streets sleeping amidst the million dollar lofts. Inexpensive art/living space is hard to come by and walking alone at night is out of the question. Yet these artists have turned downtown LA - once seedy and old - into a place of a newborn renaissance.
Jillian, age 35, a formally trained painter and graphic designer, lives in the Brewery, the largest and oldest artist complex in downtown, where they have art walks twice a year. Born in LA, she moved to San Francisco, and then moved to the Brewery six years ago. She lives in a 2,000 square foot three-level loft with a roommate. She's in high demand as an art director and set designer and she's worked for Disney, Victoria Secret, MTV, and on and on...
Marcela, age 33, is a self-taught artist. Two years ago, she came back to LA, because her life took a turn. She had just opened the Shot Gun Gallery in New Orleans when the hurricane came. Alone (since James, her musician husband was on tour), stranded with her dog and two cats for five days, she lost thirteen years worth of work. Her mother pleaded with her to return home (she was born in Pasadena) and she came back to start anew. Now, she and her husband live in Korea Town, a bustling area of artists that is now considered an extension of the downtown area.
Lilli, a sculptor, lives on Skid Row, in a loft, in one of the oldest downtown buildings. She is a single mother, who raises her fourteen-year-old daughter alone in a place that has "cheap, cheap rent." Originally from Germany, Lilli moved to the United States in 1980, then to Orange Country, and moved downtown in 1991 - way before it became trendy. In fact, as she said, "When I first came here, it was a war zone. I thought to myself, why do I have to walk through urine and piss and mud to be creative." Lilli, age 49, is known for her "body casting" events, where women take their clothes off and get "papier mache-d," while a live band plays. She is enterprising and constantly showing her work in innovative ways.
And now, I urge you to sit back and relax and read what these women have to say. As I said, they are brave, inspired by a challenge, and I commend them. I invite all of you to our upcoming event.
Q. Jillian, in terms of your lifestyle in downtown - are you living and working in the same space?
A.
I am. Unless I have a job on a set that takes me someplace else. But
even then I'm doing prep work here. Because I figured if I was going to
live in LA, I didn't want to be where I had to drive somewhere always
to do art because you never know when you are going to get inspired.
I've woken up many times at four in the morning and come down and
worked. Around here you have so many people that are doing different
variations of things that you are doing - so community and inspiration
and information is right at your figure tips. So I decided to put
everything into one place.
Q. Lilli, you have raised your daughter in downtown LA - what is that like?
A.
I was interviewed in the "Los Angeles Downtown News" about the very
same thing. We've lived in this loft building all her life and I had a
jungle gym and kids' parties up on the roof with the inflatable pools.
We have a garden up on the roof with a beautiful downtown view and they
have railings for safety. We had parties here and it was like
Disneyland - the kids loved it. I needed to keep my job because I
supported her myself. My whole entire family is in Germany. I had no
grandmothers, no mothers to help me out. We had a sweat shop on the
second floor and I met this Spanish lady, and I hired her as my nanny
for the first four years full time. That woman was like my saving
grace. She did everything while I had an 8-10 hour job. I do computer
graphic work - I still do it because I need the health insurance - that
is a big issue. Now my daughter is at Hollywood High magnet.
Q. Marcela, what do you like about living in Korea Town?
A.
We live in a tiny place, it's basically one room, a kitchen, and a
bathroom - I love the neighborhood, and the community, and being able
to walk across the street and get on the metro. I love to walk places
and recognize people and say hello to people. I think in other
neighborhoods that are more driving neighborhoods that is less of an
experience.
Q. Jillian, where do you think the art scene is going downtown? And are there a lot of women a part of it?
A.
I think the art scene is getting a good name. I think with the downtown
being built up and a lot of the places while they are in between
building - I know Tom Gilmore has given Lilli Muller space at the
Regent Theater and had a bunch of shows there -they are definitely
trying to bring art into the newer downtown that's just not your 9-5
place anymore. It use to be like ten years ago you did not come down
here after hours. And even though more women are moving into the
Brewery there are still more men than women, because it's not by the
beach, things get dirty, we have tin roofs, which are awesome when it
rains, but other than that it gets really hot and really cold. You are
definitely choosing a lifestyle away from suburbia, so you can have
that 24/7 kind of style - so you can be working and be enthralled with
everything that is going on. I do see it as bringing a lot of energy
and people coming in and getting to know the artists.
Q. Lilli, you're known for doing downtown loft parties where you put women in body casts. Are you still doing them?
A.
I haven't done one this year because I've been so busy. I have done so
much last year between the loft parties and all the community events
that I created that I decided I am going to retire from that this year
because I have to focus on my own stuff. I'm planning on doing a lot of
fund raising for my own projects. I'm working on a huge project to
participate in the Venice Biennale 2009 in Italy, and I need to raise
$100,000 to be in it - it is one of the most famous international art
fairs on the planet. Every two years it goes from June all the way to
November.
Q. Marcela, how is living in Korea Town influencing your art?
A.
It's interesting. I think it is the old gentrification story and I
always have mixed feelings about it. I think the reason a lot of
artists are moving from downtown to Korea town is because of the loft
situation and the fact that a lot of the places are going to high rent
for a lot of working artists to really afford. That's one side of it.
The other side of it is that it's great to see downtown becoming a
little bit more vibrant. To see people walking around. And it's great
to see art galleries downtown. It's this real paradox I think that is
the gentrification model where the artists move into a place they make
it interesting and safe in other people's opinion, and then the
investors move-in, and artists have to find the next cheap place to
live. So, as an artist I feel myself being chased around by developers
quite a bit.
Q. Lilli, you are literally living on Skid Row. That whole
scene is dangerous - how has it affected your sense of womanhood - your
safety?
A. Safety was never really an issue. I never had a
problem with that. There are certain street codes number one and I
personally feel much more unsafe walking around Hollywood than I do
here because the majority is homeless and down and out people. The drug
dealers and the crack dealers and the hookers - there are certain
streets where you know where they are and you just don't drive those
streets - where the guns are involved. As far as stabbings and things
like that I have to say I've seen a couple of them, they happen amongst
the dealers and the buyers themselves. There is a specific code on the
street where women with children do not get bothered. I know a lot of
the regulars. They're always friendly. My daughter learned the code,
she learned how to watch over her shoulder without being obvious, so
she can size things up much easier than anybody else. It's made my
daughter very self-confident, because you have to - you do not walk
around in fear because that's when shit happens. I always taught her,
you never walk around and you never flinch - you just cover your butt.
Q. Jillian, what is your least favorite thing about living downtown?
A.
It's a small town. What's that old statement, "everybody knows all
about you even if it isn't true." Occasionally sometimes that gets to
be a little much or a little bit of drama. Or excitement.
Q. Marcela, what's it like moving back here after being away for 13 years?
A.
Coming back here and almost immediately finding the community of
artists at The Hive was just this great thing for me. I kind of renewed
my love affair with the city of LA and with downtown.
Q. Why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. (Marcela) I think because I make my own rules and live my life the way that I want to.
A.
(Lilli) Because my entire life, I allowed my life to be guided by my
instincts and it always guided me right. And not only that with the
people that I meet through allowing my instincts to actually guide me,
I always met very amazing people and I saw where I could do something
different and I could make a difference. And I made a lot of difference
just with my artwork - just by getting people who have never done
anything with art, nor let alone having taken their clothes off in the
middle of a party with like 150 people have life altering experiences.
A. (Jillian) I think I'm funky. I enjoy people as much as I
enjoy my time alone, in order to refine anything that you are doing you
need that time to think about it, but I'm sassy, I'm an instigator, but
a fair one, I like to have fun, I like to explore, I like to be
involved in the scene, I like helping people, I like being a part of
the community, and I like being a part of life. In general, I have
spirit, I have life, I have creative resources and tendacies.
