SPIRITED WOMAN QUOTE
"Let your imagination flow from your heart, soul, and mind, and carry forward, recognizing fully that there are no limits. Ever." - Nancy Mills
----------------
EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
I love Spring. Right after I wrote the last newsletter
I got this wonderful brainstorm to host a SPIRITED WOMAN SPRING WALK in
LA. Where spirited women could celebrate Spring and our spirits. Well,
it was a wonderful success. We had a blast. Click on the photo to see
our beaming faces.
Then I decided this is it! SPIRITED WOMAN needs more of these on-going fun activities to bond us. Keep us together. Fuel our hearts, creativity, and empower us en masse. So, I am pleased to announce the new "SPIRITED WOMAN SPECIAL EVENTS" Series. Tah da! Presently, the events will be in LA, where I reside, but in the future we'll do them across the country. On May 20th, we're hosting a Spirited Woman "As You Like It" Theater event with the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company, and on June 16, a "Meet Downtown Women Artists" event at the totally hip Hive Gallery on downtown's gallery row. Please read our new event section and join us!
In honor of our new event series, and our new partners, our May Q&A this month is with the co-producers of the new All-Girl's, Wild West production of "As You Like It" - Lisa Wolpe, founder of the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company, and Abigail Rose Solomon, founder of Rosalind Productions. Two creative dynamos who wear an array of creative hats, both women share the same mission - to provide positive role models for women and girls through creative storytelling. I urge you to read their interview - I truly salute their dedication and commitment.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments, enthusiasm, and friendship. And for those of you new to the newsletter, I'd like to welcome you to our growing numbers. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) in person at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop, SPIRITED WOMAN EVENT, or within our SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE.
The SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women nationwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
LISA WOLPE, ABIGAIL ROSE SOLOMON

Yes.
It does take a village. A village of women to make things happen, to
put things on the map and to empower others. Unequivocally and without
question, Lisa Wolpe and Abigail Rose Solomon are two creative dynamos
who MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. Co-producers of the new All-Girl's, Wild West
production of Shakespeare's "As You Like It," at the Matrix Theater in
LA, Lisa and Abigail are on the move in their first production as
partners.
Bold. Energetic. 100% committed. Passionate. Unstoppable - are words that describe them both.
Lisa Wolpe, in 1993, with unwavering determination, a love of Shakespeare, and the belief that women and girl's voices need to be heard, founded the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Theater Company (LAWSTC), one of the few all-female Shakespeare companies in the world. Since then, as artistic director, she has worked with over 1,000 girls and women, of all nationalities, races, religions, and ages. Her non-profit, volunteer-based group has won numerous awards, LAWTC has produced 12 theatrical productions in 14 years, and hosted numerous galas for famous women. Lisa has probably played more of the Bard's male leading roles than any women in history. She also teaches clown classes and Shakespeare acting classes. This will be her first time directing "As You Like It," and she will perform the role of Jacques.
Abigail Rose Solomon is so passionate about Rosalind, the empowered and strong female lead in Shakespeare's romantic comedy "As You Like It," that in 2005, when she founded her production company, she named it "Rosalind Productions." An actor, playwright, and producer, Abigail graduated with a BA in theater from Williams College in Williamstown, MA and later received an MSA in acting from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She produced her first play "Stages," in LA, raising all the funds and garnering rave reviews. The motto of her company is to "entertain, empower, and enlighten," and that she does in spades. Fulfilling her dream and belief that Rosalind is one of the greatest roles ever written for a woman, Abigail will play the featured role of Rosalind in her production of "As You Like It."
A few weeks ago, when Abigail approached me for the first time, and asked if I was interested in co-partnering on a SPIRITED WOMAN "As You Like It" Theater Event - I jumped at the chance. How about leapt into the air? "Yes, yes, yes," I said. So with much ado about everything, SPIRITED WOMAN will be hosting a special afternoon of the play on May 20th, from 3-6:30 pm, with a post Q&A with the actors and a wine and cheese party following. You'll get a chance to meet Lisa, Abigail, and many of the other women in the 25-member cast. This is a one chance, one-time event, and there are only 99 seats in the theater - so please join us.
With great enthusiasm, I invite you to read more about Lisa and Abigail. Two dynamos with heart.
Q. Lisa, why did you found the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company and has Shakespeare always been a passion of yours?
A.
I created the company to create roles for women so that they could play
these wonderful parts. When I was nineteen I started performing
Shakespeare and I've always felt that it is a worthy path - a great
apprenticeship to a terrific master. I am one of the tribe who feels
that he is an incredible metaphysical thinker. I actually formed the
company to do a presentation of "Romeo & Juliet," then "Othello,"
then "Hamlet," and it took off from there. Our mission is to bring
women and girls' voices onto the stage and into the world.
Q. Abigail, your company, Rosalind Productions has partnered with LAWSC
because you share the mission to provide positive role models for
women and girls through creative storytelling. Could you expound upon that?
A.
Everything I've done as an artist is to provide strong complex vital
roles for women. I refused to play whores. That has been my take in the
world. I
went to an all girls' school for 13 years, so I have a very feminist
outlook that we are all equal. The reason why I started my company is
because I had a very clear vision that I wanted to produce plays with
strong women and there were a bunch of them that I wanted to act in and
certainly stories I wanted to see done and that's what Lisa does. She
does all female Shakespeare, which to me was very familiar. Also
multiculturism is important to her, and I just got a
NAACP nomination and it is important to me too. She has a mission to
empower women and girls. It's the perfect fit - she and I have very
similar sensibilities as to what is important to us.
Q. Lisa, you are a master teacher of Shakespeare - where did you study to become a Shakespearian actor?
A.
I worked for many years at Shakespeare & Company with Tina Packer
in Massachusetts. I was a member of a Company of Women with Kristan
Linklater, who was head of Columbia School of the Arts' training
program in New York. I worked at the Globe Theater in London. I
graduated from UC San Diego in theater and I've trained all over the
world. I've been to the Edinburgh Festival three times. I've trained
for 30 years at this point and done a lot of plays. I'll just continue
doing that until I die. I picked a profession that I would never be
done with - I find it infinitely challenging and wonderful.
Q. Abigail, your version of "As You Like It" is an "All-Girl Cowboy" production - how did this particular concept come about?
A.
First of all, "As You Like It" is done at big theaters every year. So,
I knew we needed something special going into it. What was the
excitement? Lisa to be honest is a genius and she is an expert
on Shakespeare. The Wild West was totally her idea. She likes it. She's
starting a Shakespeare saloon. It fit perfectly with the story. It was
something that she had wanted to do for a while.
Q. Abigail, you're acting in this play, and producing it, and
you are also a playwright - what hat are you the most comfortable
wearing?
A. I really enjoy all of them to be honest. It's
hard to do all three at once which is what I did for my play "Stages,"
which was also my first time producing. Balancing it is really hard but
I learned my lessons. Now, I'm very clear about when I'm producing and
when I'm acting and not mixing them. I have a lot of selves, so I am
very organized and a good project manager and that really satisfies the
producer in me, but my true love is acting and it's what I have been
doing my whole life. I am an artist at heart. I am very emotional. The
play writing is the hardest for me because I am a new playwright and
"Stages" was my first full-length play. The non-social part of me likes
to sit down and write. Right now, that I am producing and acting, I've
never been so relaxed in my life.
Q. Lisa, "Los Angeles Magazine" has called LAWSC "one of the ten coolest things to do in Los Angeles," why do you think that is?
A.
We're great artists, look at our reviews. We're incredible artists and
there's women on stage who are beautiful. It is very cool. It's very
hip to have empowered women on stage in an expert production with
beautiful production values. It's very hip that I raise the money and I
make it happen. You couldn't do this in Wisconsin. There wouldn't be
the expertise and there wouldn't be the interest (Spirited Woman disagrees).
Q. Why are you excited to partner with SPIRITED WOMAN for the May 20th event?
A.
(Lisa) Well, it takes a village and everybody is working together to
make the world a better place, so it is great if we can do alliances.
A.
(Abigail) I'm thrilled that you are interested. You sound like you have
similar goals. That you're into empowering women and you want people to
have fun. I like partnering with people. I think that's success. Like I
said the value of theater is the community. I think it is a nice
joining of people who are thinking in the same way.
Q. Why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. (Lisa) I feel like I am an internal spiritual being having a human experience.
A.
(Abigail) I am all spirit. To me, it's all about, basically, if I have
an idea I implement it and I have a lot of energy and a lot of spirit.
I think of spirit as dancing through life and making it your own.
That's what I want to do - taking women and encourging them to really
live truly to their heart and know that they can do anything their
spirit wants if they believe in themselves.
THANK YOU LISA & ABIGAIL. YES IT DOES TAKE A VILLAGE. A VILLAGE OF WOMEN.
