SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
AIMEE LIU
A
few years ago when I was living full time in Santa Barbara, I tried to
organize a Santa Barbara Chapter of PEN USA, a non-profit organization
dedicated to defending the rights of writers. Both Aimee Liu and I were
members of the LA Chapter, and in fact, at the time she was its
president. I fondly remember her driving up to SB to convince me that
my efforts were worthwhile. Sadly, the chapter never took off but I
felt I had made a friend for life. Aimee has that effect on people.
Kind, dedicated, committed, diplomatic, and extremely talented, there is so much to say about her, that a brief introduction is not enough. In her 53 years, she has lived many incarnations. Acclaimed author of both fiction (Flash House, Cloud Mountain, and Face) and non-fiction, a prominent short story writer, essayist, and article writer, wife, mother, anorexia survivor, eating disorder advocate, and more - Aimee attacks life with fierce determination. Perhaps, it has something to do with the fact that her grandfather was a Chinese scholar-revolutionary and her grandmother an independent American woman.
I am proud to say that on February 28, Aimee will be one of the few authors invited to launch a book on The Today Show. That's right, Aimee will introduce her new book Gaining: The Truth About Life After Eating, on The Today Show. I am so happy for her. Predicted to be a bestseller, her book draws on her own history of anorexia, recovery, and countless interviews, and is a 30-year sequel to her acclaimed memoir of anorexia nervosa, Solitaire written when she was just twenty-five.
Aimee's marvelous Q&A this month is of a woman on the edge of change. Not only for herself but for the millions of women who will benefit from her knowledge and desire to insure that all women have the right to recognize the importance of their own self-awareness - and that unless we as women are aware, eating disorders will have dire implications on our lives, and on those around us.
I'm honored that Aimee will be our first SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE guest on March 6th. As she says, "I think the circle is a terrific service to help women create a web of communication around the country and a sharing of ideas that expands their horizons." Q. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A.
I probably started leaning towards writing when I was in about fifth
grade. I started keeping a diary. I mean it is true of so many girls -
it was really Anne Frank who was the first role model in that direction
for me. I read the book about her and at first you sort of imitate her
style and then gradually it becomes deeper and more revealing and true
and it's the one place where you can have an honest authentic voice -
at least it was for me.
Q. Are you from a creative family - is there a history of writers in your family?
A.
My father's father was a classical Chinese poet and although I never
met him there have been times in my life where I felt I was channeling
him. He, I would say, just in terms of what I read of his work and I
also wrote my second novel (Cloud Mountain) about him and my
American grandmother in an attempt to get a sense of who these people
were - who I had never known, and in that process I got to feel very
close to him as a kindred spirit.
Q. Your first book Solitaire published in 1979 was
America's first memoir on anorexia - did you realize at the time that
you would become a leading advocate for women with eating disorders?
A.
It seemed pretty marginal in those days. It was just coming out of the
woodwork and although I had known lots of people in school who had the
illness it was still not recognized as the serious problem. I had very
mixed feelings about it at that point in my life - where it was the
launch of my writing career - I did not see myself as a "professional
anorexic" and I didn't want to be associated with that particular
direction. I now realize that probably the major reason I felt that way
was that I still had a lot of unresolved issues that were related to
the eating disorder and that I wasn't fully recovered. That's really
what I've been writing about in my new book, but it took me 30 years to
recognize that.
Q. As a young girl you struggled with anorexia then at 19 you made the decision to overcome it - what changed in your life?
A. The defining moment to me as it is very clear to most of the people that I interviewed for Gaining
- it's a moment when you really just hit bottom - when you are so
unhappy, or so scared, or so hungry in every sense of the word, and
suddenly something snaps and you can't explain anymore why you're doing
this terrible harm to yourself. In my case, there was no intervention
on my family's part and I was never treated for it. It was a very
specific moment during August of that year. I was living my life
basically in order to lose weight and I had pushed everybody in my life
away from me and it was a profound sense of isolation and loneliness. I
just couldn't tolerate it anymore - so I started to come back to the
world of the living.
Q. While writing Gaining you discovered many new facts about anorexia - could you share some of them with us?
A.
The dominant myth, thanks to the whole focus suddenly on anorexic
models, is that eating disorders are created by our cultural climate
and by the emphasis on dieting and size 0 models. The reality is our
cultural attitudes fuel the disorder but the disorder at its basis
comes from within. People throughout history have suffered from eating
disorders - St. Catherine of Sienna in the 1300's was an anorexic saint
and there were hundreds like her. It really starts with the
biochemistry of an indivual and that was hugely surprising to me.
Researchers have discovered that between 60-83% of the causes of eating
disorders are genetic. So, certain individuals have a genetic
predisposition to stop eating when they feel anxious and then that
instinct gets fueled by the climate they're in. That basically says,
"you'll be perfect and everybody will love you and you'll feel better
if you just lose weight." Obviously, given the obesity rate, that
message doesn't take hold with the vast majority of people. But with
this group, which may be as high as 20% of women it has dire
consequences.
Q. What can we as women do to help stop eating disorders in our society?
A.
The most important thing that I found is to recognize the importance of
self-awareness. I think that one of the reasons that eating disorders
and many other psychological problems occur is that people are in a
state of denial about what they are actually feeling, what their
identity really is - and there are a whole host of reasons why that
happens. But I think that one of the most effective keys to unlocking
these problems and resolving them is to become more honest with
ourselves about who we are and more self-aware about how we react when
we're anxious. The things in our lives that cause us stress, the people
in our lives who make us feel better and also the people in our lives
who make us feel worse. If we paid more attention to those cues and
were more honest with ourselves and with each other as a society we'd
have far fewer of these kind of problems.
Q. When you think of your life five years from now how do you see it?
A.
You know what I would hope from this book ironically, and this kind of
goes back to your earlier question. I'm now ready to be an advocate and
an activist in this particular arena in a way that I never could have
been when I was 25. I have become more self-aware. Not that I'm perfect
by any means, but I recognize where the problem areas are, I see the
problems in other people that I know and in our culture, and I see a
great hope in recognizing and addressing those problems honestly rather
than denying them and trying to escape from them. So in five years, I
hope I will be out there talking about this with groups, with women.
There's a line that I've written, "We have to unlock ourselves to
unleash our power to change the world." I think that is really the
direction that I'm going.
Q. Aimee, why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A.
Well, I don't think I always was for openers. I think that I'm getting
there. And it's very exciting to get there. I think the first key to
being a spirited woman is to have the courage to be true to yourself,
to be honest, and I think that I'm just getting to where I understand
who I am and I am eager to share that with the rest of the world and
exchange ideas with other spirited women and men. As a writer you spend
a lot of time in a room by yourself and that can be dis-spiriting to a
certain point and so I think that for me becoming a spirited woman
means finding the balance between that writer in the room by herself
and the activist out in the world trying to help other people discover
themselves.

E-mail a 60 word or less description of your listing (word count must include phone number and such) by the last day of each month (i.e. February 28 for March 1 issue) to: NancyMills@TheSpiritedWoman.com and put "LISTING BOARD" in the subject line. The same applies to photos and a JPEG (no larger than 200 pixels) is required.
All past SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP attendees receive ONE FREE 60-word listing EACH MONTH. To ad a photo it costs $15 monthly. All additional listing are $25 per item per month, and with photo $40 per month.
For those of you who have NOT attended the SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP it cost $25 per listing per month or $40 with photo. Please follow the above instructions.
