Also, I’ve been really busy. Just came back from Kauai (I know someone has to do it!) and the SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop there was terrific. The women who attended were dynamite and filled with energy! We took some wild photos, and are now posting them on the website. So, keep checking – they are really fun and colorful. Also, I urge you to think about bringing a workshop to your city. It’s great for networking, getting a great group of women together, and promoting your business or service.
This month, the Q&A is with Sue Grafton – how about one of the most successful mystery writers (male or female) on the planet! Her alphabet book mystery series has sold mega-millions – but it is her fortitude that I truly admire. Sue is an unstoppable survivor. I think you’ll find her interview most fascinating. SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
Sue Grafton
Sue Grafton is a bonafide inspirational spirited woman wonder. Talented, funny, gutsy, the author and creator of the 23-year-old and counting, famed “alphabet” mystery series - as in “A” is for Alibi, “B” is for Burglary - she has not only sold a ga-zillion copies of her books in over 20 languages and is one of the most well-known mystery writers - male or female - of our time, but she has been honored by her peers with several prestigious mystery awards. In 2003, the Private Eye Writers of America gave her their Lifetime Achievement Award.
As fate would have it (are there any accidents?) I met Sue a few years ago when I had the opportunity to interview her for MORE Magazine. This was a real treat, since I'd always been a huge fan. I was able to catch up with her at one of her favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara (by the by, her books' locale, Santa Teresa is modeled after Santa Barbara) where she lives half the year - the other half in her home town, Louisville, Kentucky.
I found Sue to be charming, really smart, focused, and a touch eccentric in her turned around baseball cap and bulky sweatshirt that had “Police” written on the front. I later found out that she lives with three beloved cats - Emma, Beau (who hisses & spits), and Molly, has a woman personal chef, is married to a younger man, and that she loves fine wine and gourmet cooking.
Personally, there have been many a night, where I've lost myself in the world of Kilsey Millhone - her famous female detective. And, I still find it a thrill to have met Sue and to not only have interviewed her once, but twice in the last few years. This latest interview took place last month and I urge you to read it from A to Z (just kidding!). Sue's life is as interesting as her heroine's - only hers is for real. And before I forget – her next book, “S is for Silence” is being released December 6th. So go buy it!
Q. When you were growing up in Kentucky, did you dream of becoming a writer?
A. My father (C.W. Grafton) was a municipal bond attorney who wrote and published three mystery novels in his spare time, if an attorney can be said to have spare time. Writing was his first passion, but he couldn't make a living at it so he devoted himself to his law practice. I grew up in a household where books and writing were revered, but it didn't really occur to me that I might become a writer. I assumed I'd teach school, but by the time I was eighteen, I'd been bitten by the writing bug. KEZIAH DANE, my first novel (fourth full-length manuscript) was published when I was twenty-five years old.
Q. What brought you out to Hollywood? Didn't you work in the entertainment industry for a while?
A. My second novel, THE LOLLY-MADONNA WAR, sold to Hollywood and I ended up working there for fifteen years, writing film scripts and movies for television. I loved the glamour of it, but hated working by committee. Film is truly a collaborative medium and it didn't suit me. I wrote 'A' IS FOR ALIBI as my way out. This is one reason you'll never see Kinsey Millhone on the big or little screen. I know better!
Q. You've sold millions of books in over 20 languages - how did your alphabet murder series come to be? What spurned you on to create this?
A. I decided to write 'A' IS FOR ALIBI for two reasons. First, a Hollywood agent reported that the feedback he was getting was that I could write character but couldn't do plot. I thought tackling a mystery would be the perfect means of teaching myself how to construct a solid story with beginning, middle, and end. Second, I knew I needed to get back to solo writing before whatever talent I possessed was squandered in network meetings.
Q. The main character in your books is Kinsey Millhone. Why did you choose a woman detective versus a man, and weren't you one of the first authors to have a best-selling series with a woman detective?
A. I grew up reading hard-boiled private detective novels...Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammet, and Ross MacDonald among them...so when I decided to try a mystery novel of my own that was the form I found most appealing. At the time, I knew nothing about California criminal law, toxicology, ballistics, or police procedure so I was teaching myself those disciplines as fast as I could. I decided to write about a woman detective because being female was my only area of expertise. I wouldn't have a clue how to write a first person narrative from a male point of view.
Q. In December your "S" is for Silence is coming out. Since you write one book a year - that means you've written a book a year for 19 years. Are you tired? Did you ever want to quit?
A. At this point, I'm not writing a novel a year. 'A' IS FOR ALIBI was published in 1982 so it's taken me twenty-three years to write nineteen books. The interval between books is closer to eighteen months. I find writing very intense, full of road blocks and dead ends, frustration, and stress. By the time I finish a novel, I'm convinced I'll never write one again, which is why I've given myself permission to work at my own pace. Having made the commitment to 'do' the alphabet, I don't intend to quit short of 'Z' IS FOR ZERO. I could always get hit by a bus, but I try to take very good care of myself.
Q. What do you plan to do after you've written 'Z' IS FOR ZERO? Retire? Move to the moon?
A. At my current rate of publication, I won't reach "Z" until approximately 2015 and I have no idea what I'll do at that point. If Ms. Millhone has further adventures she wants to share, I'll be happy to act as her recording secretary. On the other hand, I don't want to keep writing just for the sake of it. As long as I have the 'juice' and the enthusiasm, I'll write.
Q. Do you enjoy the celebrity hood of being a famous author? Or are you basically a private person?
A. I don't consider myself a celebrity, nor do I think of myself as a 'famous' author. I'm basically an introvert and a homebody, but I feel that part of my job is to make contact with my readers. My mailing list has five thousand names on it and all of those people have written to me and received correspondence in return. I also send out what I call my Kinsey Millhone Christmas card each year, in addition to notices about each shortly before publication. I meet many of my readers while I'm touring a book and that's always great fun. Of course, I come home exhausted, but after a day or two, I'm back at my desk.
Q. As a writer, was the road to financial success an easy one for you - or a struggle?
A. I'm not sure any writer (or any artist for that matter) has an easy time of it. Most of us are flying by the seat of our pants, hoping for the best, but taking whatever comes along and trying to make the best of it. I suspect it takes more in the way of survival skills than talent to prevail in any field. Writing is a struggle and not everyone is cut out for that. Let me stop and correct myself. Writing is satisfying and sometimes it's great fun; it's finding an agent and getting published that drives most people to despair. I feel incredibly lucky that after twenty years of writing, I finally made the acquaintance of Ms. Kinsey Millhone who's been my faithful companion ever since.
Q. Other than writing, what gives you the greatest joy?
A. My family, friends, reading, exercise, my cats, good health, good food, good wine, and enough money to take care of my bills.
Q. What's the best thing any writer can do for herself?
A. Learn to look at writing as a form of play.
Q. Sue, why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A. As a Spirited Woman, you have to take responsibility for where you are in the world. Working hard, doing your best, being determined and persistent, taking your knocks and coming up fighting again. At the same time, you have to be a decent person and treat others well. You can't be any more spirited than that.
