EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
What a busy and exciting month! Yeaha, wow and all that. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I'm off to Philadelphia mid-month to lead for the first time ever, a special evening event: I AM A SPIRITED WOMAN: HEAR ME ROAR at the Health & Wellness Center in Warrington, PA. I'll also be teaching two SPIRITED WOMAN afternoon workshops there, too. I'm just thrilled to meet all these fantabulous women on the East Coast and to embark on a whole new adventure.
And I must also tell you, if it weren't for Susan Duval's un-wavering support and enthusiasm - Philadelphia would be where the Liberty Bell resides, not a SPIRITED WOMAN event. Susan, who coordinates events for the Health & Wellness Center, recently became a subscriber to this newsletter and went into action. She called me up several months ago and basically said, “You're coming out here, Nancy, and you're doing your first event on the East Coast.” Her unbridled energy literally pulled me through the phone and I am beyond delighted she is hosting this event.
As a tribute to Susan, and to the truly extraordinary women of Philadelphia, this newsletter will have three shortened Q & A's with three unforgettable Philadelphia-based women: Reverend Edie Weinstein-Moser, Dr. Beth Dupree, and Sepia Baker. Titled “The Spirited Women of Philadelphia,” you will read how each one of these remarkable women, in her own distinguished and spirited way - has raised the bar for all women. From breast cancer treatment to affirmation workshops for women of color - these women have made a difference. I urge you to read on.
Also, for any subscribers whose lives and families have been intimately affected by the Katrina tragedy my heart goes out to you. It is a tragedy of huge proportion, and we are all devastated by it.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
“The Spirited Women of Philadelphia”
Reverend Edie Weinstein-Moser, Dr. Beth Dupree, Sepia Baker
I loved interviewing these women! Reverend Edie Weinstein-Moser is bursting with love and joy. Dr. Beth Dupree is one of the leading breast cancer surgeons in America and is a bonafide mind, body, and soul dynamo. And Sepia Baker is a transformer who travels to the beat of a HUGE affirmation drum.
In this very different SPIRITED WOMAN Q&A, I'll give a brief overview of each woman, and then go into her shortened Q&A. Also, for those of you in the Philadelphia area, we welcome you and all your spirited woman friends to the September 16th “I AM A SPIRITED WOMAN: HEAR ME ROAR EVENT,” and the SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops on September 17th and 18th. Both Edie and Sepia will be at the special event, and Edie will be attending the September 17th workshop as well.
Now, to these extraordinary women.
Reverend Edie Weinstein-Moser, 46, is a licensed social worker, interfaith minister, Reiki Master, clown, writer, speaker, workshop leader, and a greeting card text writer. A resident of Bucks County, she is the adoptive parent of a special needs child, son Adam, who is now 18. In 1998, she was widowed, when her beloved husband Michael died while awaiting a liver transplant. She says, “Through a series of emotional roller coaster rides, she has learned how to relax and enjoy the scenery along the way.”
Q. What's your “live in joy” philosophy all about?
A. What I've found is that even in the midst of challenges, traumas, dramas - we always have a choice. We can wallow in self-pity, we can kick and scream and fight what is or we can experience joy in every moment - it's always a choice. And what I endeavor to teach people is the “how to.” The practical steps - because it's just not enough to say “live in joy.” It's not easy all the time to do that, but one clue is being in the now, in the moment. I allow myself a pity party once in awhile and because I'm the only guest there I don't stay very long. I let myself pout for a little bit, and then I say, “Okay, what's the story you're telling yourself about this situation.” I try and remind my clients, who they are and who they're not.
Q. Edie, what gives you the greatest pleasure in life?
A. Being with kindred spirits. There's a beautiful Gallic term “Anam Cara” which means “soul friend.” When you recognize somebody all over again. When you meet someone for the “first time” and you know them right away there is this instantaneous connection. That I think , gives me the most joy, connecting from the heart, merging souls. I know that sounds melodramatic but that is the best way I can say it. Since my husband died I have met more people that I would consider Anam Cara than I have met in the earlier part of my life.
Q. What advice would you give any woman going through a transition? Particularly if it involves the loss of loved one, such as a husband?
A. Taking a deep breath, first of all, and recognizing that she is safe, that there are people who love her. Seek out support. I had tremendous support from family, friends, spiritual community. Find a purpose if you don't already have one. I went to seminary after Michael died and that was a big part of my purpose. Realize that life changes occur, it's not a punishment; it's not something God does to you. Keep your faith strong if that is something you believe in. And nurture yourself.
Q. Edie, why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. Because I am aware on a 24/7 basis that I'm in contact with Spirit with a capital “S.” I'm tapped into the universal grid if you want to call it that. I experience what I call “spiritual amnesia” at times forgetting who I am. Then an event, a person, something will happen - a miracle if you want to call it that - will remind me that I am connected intimately to the divine and that's something that pours forth in everything that I do.
Leading breast cancer surgeon Dr. Beth Dupree, age 44, adamantly believes that using a holistic approach to healing is crucial for a patient's wellness. Married with two children, she lives in Bucks County, is a sought after speaker on breast care, the winner of numerous humanitarian awards, and she is currently working with DSI, a medical visionary company, to develop and build the first comprehensive breast care hospital in this country combining the latest in technology and the best healing modalities for patients with breast disease. Beth is clearly on the cutting-edge of medicine. And I salute her.
Q. As a surgeon who specializes in breast cancer treatment, you feel that marrying state-of-the-art technology with a holistic approach to healing a patient is extremely important. Why is that?
A. When someone is diagnosed with cancer every aspect of their life changes, it is not just a physical change from either the loss of a breast, but every aspect of who they are is never the same. If as a surgeon I focus only on treating the physical body and removing the cancer then what I have essentially done is minimize a disease or growth process for the patient to a several day process of removing a cancer. When someone is diagnosed if I don't assure that patient that they can once again be whole and complete, meaning making sure that their spiritual self and their mental self are centered with their physical, then I haven't really done my job as a physician and as a healer to enable that person to live their life even fuller and better than they were prior to the cancer. One of the pitfalls of Western medicine is the focus of technology on the treatment of the disease process, which has somehow separated us from Eastern Medicine which is focusing on the being or the person that has the disease process.
Q. Tell us about your Breast Cancer Healing Ministry.
A. It came about because of a tremendous need. When I had patients diagnosed with cancer I realized a long time ago that I can't do their healing for them. I can physically treat the cancer, but I can't do their work of healing. That's something the patient has to do. When I finally became aware of that and stopped trying to do that all myself, I realized I could be a facilitator. So in order to have access to healing modalities such as Reiki, massage, hypnosis, reflexology, nutritional, psychological counseling, I used to barter time with my healing companions - because it's very hard to have money to put forward as a patient as you are going through cancer treatment. So, the brain-child erupted - why don't we raise money and then we can actually pay the therapist and not charge the patients. Women with breast cancer tend to put themselves second or third in their lives - everybody else's life is more important - the kids, the husband, the parents - and that is just the state of womenhood in this day and age. Our thought was if we can begin that process of giving to them as a “so called gift from the universe” when they've used up their money - they will understand the importance of continuing that process and that they are worth putting the money forward.
Q. What advice would you give to any woman with breast cancer?
A. When you're diagnosed with breast cancer, number one, learn to make yourself the priority, become educated in all of your treatment options, become your own advocate, always seek a second opinion and if a physician is opposed to you seeking a second opinion it's probably a physician that you don't want to be with. Because physicians that are confident in what they do and what they believe in and in their skills will always be comfortable with their patients getting a second opinion. When diagnosed with cancer, some of the best advice they can get are from other women in their area who have been treated - because they'll know the “in's and out's.” Breastcancer.org is a website I send my patients too, - because it is an excellent resource and a very interactive site.
Q. Is there any new breast cancer “news” that you'd like to share with us? Such as new treatments or medications.
A. The newest things on the horizon that a lot of women don't know about are the minimally invasive biopsy techniques. Women no longer need to be taken to the operating room to get the diagnosis of breast cancer. There's a procedure called a Mammotome Biopsy that allows us to get true tissues in a physician's office. It's very important for women to know, if their doctor tells them that they have to go to the operating room for a biopsy, they want to seek a second opinion. I still take patients to the operating room at times, but it is very rare to get a diagnosis. Most women can be diagnosed in an out-patient setting which allows us to find out more expediently what's going on with them. Two other things are very important. There are some new types of chemotherapy, commercially available that are very cure specific - a drug called Herceptin - and it's important to know whether your tumor is responsive to that. Another innovation is partial breast irradiation, where we can minimize the patients radiation exposure to the breast. Many post menopausal women are candidates for that procedure.
Q. Beth, why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A. I guess the biggest reason for knowing that I am a spirited woman is that as I move forward in my life, I'm just in the journey and the journey's amazing. As I come up against obstacles to providing a better level of care for women, the challenges that I face are nothing compared to the challenges my patients face. So I think that my going through these kind of growing pains and process has made me a spirited woman in two different senses of being spirited - one is to have the tenacity to move forward and just the knowingness you are doing the right thing, and a second way I think of myself as a spirited woman is more spiritual. The more that I am focused on the goal of what I am trying to achieve - the more centered I feel in myself.
Sepia Baker, age 43, is a transformative life coach, poet, the host of her own TV show, “Re-Discover Your Life with Sepia,” workshop leader and entrepreneur. A resident of Huntington Valley, she is also the mother of 4 kids, and the wife of Ben Wright, a well-known educator, who is her co-founder in the Write-It-Non-Violence school campaign, which helps young black children to express themselves. She travels the globe with her message of affirmation.
Q. A few years back, you created the Fullnomenal Woman Embracing Your Fullness Workshop - what was it about?
A. Fullnomenal Woman came out of a workshop with primarily women from Cambodia, Latina women, and black women, who were expressing their fullness. There's an old saying, “look at you girl, you're full of yourself.” Particularly in Southern black community and it was about embracing that fullness. Yes I am full of myself and it's okay. In other words, walk in your greatness. Walk in all of your fullness, and be a FULL-nomenal woman.
Q. You're also a transformative life coach. What do you do?
A. Basically put a mirror on people and allow them to see themselves. To see their reflection of life and to decide what to do about it - as far as make changes. Usually, the outgrowth according to the participants is a willingness to look at their life, reflect, learn to center themselves, affirm themselves through visualization and positive affirmations as well as basically re-discovering themselves by digging for their spiritual root. The growth that is received by the participants is an overall balance and definitely a change of direction in their lives for more positive growth.
Q. You teach the popular Affirmative Action 4 Life Workshop. Tell us about it.
A. There again it came through me as the ability to assist people in their transformation. By sharing with them how to language their life for success; listening to their language - how to move beyond limitations; how to look at right thinking, right living; how to create prosperity and abundance; how to practice and become a stress-less being and that's all in four components by centering, affirming, visualizing and releasing.
Q. Sepia, why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A. I know that I am a Spirited Woman because I have allowed myself, I've done the work to seek that which is within me and expose it and share it. And that is the spirit of oneness. So I know that I am a wonderful spirited woman.
