SPIRITED WOMAN QUOTE
"There is not a woman on the planet of earth, who is not wise.” - Nancy Mills

EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
And what a wonderful world it is. August proved to be a fabulous month for movement, spirit, new workshop attendees and positive press. Wow. How the beat goes on. The month kicked-off with a great feature article in the Montecito Journal (Aug. 5th issue) on the SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop. Written by Judy Foreman, who attended the workshop in Santa Barbara, the piece really explains the essence of what we're all about. Thank you, Judy! Here's a toast to your perseverance in getting the piece published. Also, for any of you who would like to read the article, just let me know, and I will send it to you in a PDF file.
Now, in the “Would-you-believe?” category - close to 100 women signed up for the SPIRITED WOMAN E-Newsletter in August. It's incredible how word-of-mouth is bringing in new spirited women from all over. Apparently, last month's T.S. Wiley interview was very well received, and many of you forwarded it to your friends. Kudos to you and thanks. The workshops, too, were a powerful draw and about 30 new women attended in Santa Barbara, LA, & San Diego. By the by, I LOVED San Diego and I'll be doing more workshops there in November.
In this issue, there is a truly touching, revealing, and intimate interview with actress/author Marcia Wallace, one of the most inspirational women I've had the opportunity to interview. The former star of The Bob Newhart Show (she played Carol, his tall, red-haired secretary) her life has been FILLED with ups and downs - from breast cancer, a nervous breakdown, widowhood, and more - she is a genuine SURVIVOR. I think you'll find her interview special.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments enthusiasm, and friendship. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop in your city.
The SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women nationwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
MARCIA WALLACE
Marcia Wallace, 60, is an extraordinary woman who has led an extraordinary life. Actress, motivational speaker, mother of a teenage son, as well as a breast cancer awareness advocate, Marcia is truly an inspiration. I met Marcia through our mutual friend, author Elizabeth (Betsy) Hailey (A Woman of Independent Means) three years ago. I instantly liked this tall, gregarious, funny, dynamic woman. Her openness is catching.
Most of you remember Marcia as Carol on The Bob Newhart Show, that wonderful sitcom that defined television of the 70's, but recently, as Marcia likes to say, “I've re-invented myself for the seven thousandth time, and become an author.” Right now, along with her 16-year-old son, her book is her passion and her mission.
Titled “Don't Look Back We're Not Going That Way,” and sub-titled “or how I overcame a rocky childhood, a nervous breakdown, breast cancer, widowhood, fat, fire and menopausal motherhood and still manage to count my lucky chickens”…Marcia's story is incredible and the way she tells it is very endearing. I laughed and cried out loud as I read her book.
Marcia, who counts LA as her home, travels across the country as a speaker, primarily for breast cancer, and she also appears at many book signings. In fact, for those of you who live in LA, on September 15th, she'll be signing her book at Barnes & Noble in the Grove Shopping Center. She welcomes you. Now I welcome you to grab a cup of coffee and read on about Marcia…a spirited woman with a never-give-up attitude.
Q. When did you realize you wanted to become an actress? Did you have a pivotal life moment?
A. I grew up in the decade of denial in the Midwest in the 1950's where it was clear to me early on I was going to be out of the loop. I didn't look like other little girls, or sound like other little girls - in fact, people used to come to the door and say, “Is your husband in?” and I'd say “I'm nine, for heavens sake.” So I was always sort of different and wanted to be a journalist. I didn't have any mentors. Nobody expected much from me. They were wrong weren't they? Except I did have one teacher, my journalism teacher, and she said, “Honey, you've got no nose for news - go into drama.” And I thought she wouldn't steer me wrong so I started doing plays in high school, and in college, and then somebody said you should go to New York, and I said, “Okay.” I really had more guts than brains. I suppose once you feel like you are left out, kind of an odd duck - when you hear that applause it is pivotal.
Q. What led you to become an inspirational speaker? And when you are on the road what do you talk about?
A. It is my story is all. I never actually wrote a speech. In fact, I'm amazed I wrote a book because basically I consider myself less of a writer and more of a storyteller. I've always shared stories on talk shows, on game shows, at parties, and I kept journals, wrote letters. I try to encourage women to take responsibility for their breast health, to listen to their bodies, to do what they should do and take care of themselves and early detection is the key. It's worked out really well for me - I did it as a volunteer for years and then when my husband was dying and our house was in foreclosure and it was just the pits - somebody said you could get paid for this - and I said, “Oh no, I'm not good enough.” And then I said, “Wait a minute, let's re-think this.” Again, it's kind of a late bloomer, never-give-up, just kind of be out there and keep-at-it thing.
Q. How did you come up with the title of your book?
A. The title is from my father. My father said a lot of things in his life, one of which was when he was 70, he decided he wanted to be a real estate mogul and he took the test and he flunked it 13 times, and I said, “Dad, aren't you discouraged?” And he said, “Hell, no - no sense looking back, we're not going that way.” But he also used to say, “If I don't see you again the mule is yours.” So, not everything he said was deep. But, I always remembered that and I really thought that would be a great title.
Q. Getting your book published has been quite a journey - tell us about it.
A. People at my speeches used to say to me, “You know, you have a good story, if you had a book, I'd buy it.” And I thought, oh well, all right. Then I was approached by agents and a couple of publishers - when you have a book let us know. So I wrote a book and started to send it out there - knocking on the doors of people who supposedly couldn't wait for this book. Well, I was turned down by 45 publishers. I had a hotshot agent and I met many publishers in New York and came very, very close, but as we all know, Nancy, that and a nickel will get you very little. Then my agent said we're awfully sorry but we don't know who else to send it to. So I went out on my own trying to find smaller publishers and they turned it down. Finally I said, “Well, I've got this book, I'm not just going to put it in the drawer.” A friend of mine helped me find out about self-publishing and I published it myself. Then I set up book signings myself, got some press myself and low and behold, submitted it to Barnes & Noble Small Press Department and they accepted it. I'm now into my 2nd printing of 4,000 books. I'm very thrilled.
Q. Marcia, you've had lots of heartache in your life, what in your character do you feel has gotten you through it all?
A. Tenacity. I think it's in the DNA. I have a life force. It was clear to me early on as I was taking my inventory - thinking what do I have going for me that I can parlay into an interesting life - that I wasn't going to be a great beauty, I'm smart enough, but a great genius, or singer/dancer, charismatic, I'm not. I just knew that I had a sense of humor and I had tenacity. I just don't give up. And I am by nature, an optimist. I try to tell my son, who is wildly talented, you've just got to hang in there and be tenacious and try not to take things personally. Easier said than done. In my next life I think I'd like to have a great singing voice and be a great beauty.
Q. Do you have a personal inspirational mantra, attitude, philosophy that you'd like to share with us? Something that revs you up?
A. I do say, “Don't look back we're not going that way to myself, a lot.” Also, there's a Buddhist principle, I'm a Buddhist, and it's something called honimyo and it means starting from now. Okay, let's start again. Try to build some momentum, but even if you feel like you're always starting from scratch - it's that starting from now. Because you never know what's going to happen. It could all change on a dime. It is so illusive.
Q. You had a mad love affair with your husband, what did that relationship teach you?
A. Oh, didn't I, wasn't I lucky? It taught me to breathe, more than anything. I don't think I breathed in the years before I met Dennis. All the time we were together I felt calm. I just felt absolutely okay in a way that I never had before. I mean I looked into his face and I saw the best part of myself and that kind of connection was just magical. It wasn't that we didn't have problems - look he died, we were broke, there were a million things, but I met somebody at the right time. I also learned the only way it worked, because in the past my tenacity has gotten me into a lot of trouble, (I'm going to beat some life into this, I'm going to make this happen) was to appreciate my life. And when Denny said, “I don't want to get married, I was married and I didn't like it, I love you, but I don't want to get married.” I thought for once in my life I'm going to shut up. I'm going to appreciate all the wonderful things he does and is and feels about me and not concentrate on what I'm not getting. Six months later in my kitchen, he said, “I can't go one more minute without being married to you.” He taught me to appreciate life in ways that I never had before. It was a great gift. I loved him. He also used to say right before he died, “I hate this dying honey bun, I'm so glad we used the good china.” That was really like a metaphor for our life together.
Q. What advice would you give women who are going through a hard time now?
A. Well, I guess all those trite things about one day at a time. “Don't have no cheap dreams,” my Dad use to say to me. There is so much out there that we hear - we're too old, we're too fat, we're too this, we're too that - but it's just not true. Anything is possible. My god, I got married in my 40's, I've made a living doing a job that almost nobody makes a good living doing. 6% of all parts go to women over 40, but somebody's got to be that 6% and I figure it may as well be me. You know women with dreams that seem insurmountable, somebody's got to be the one to write this book or paint this picture or find this new career. Why shouldn't it be you?
Q. When you look into your crystal ball what do you see in your future?
A. It's funny. I feel that I was so lucky because for years I really did look forward. Everything got better and better. When Denny died everything came screeching to a halt. I started looking backward yearning for the things I've lost. I was thrown off balance so by his death - it surprised even me. All the resilience, the touchstones I use to feel about myself. Then I went into raging menopause at the same time. But, now again, I'm starting to see all the possibilities. Look what I've done with this silly book, I mean 45 publishers turned me down! But, I figure, “f… em.” I was determined to make it happen. I don't know what's coming up next, I'm really just enjoying the book journey right now and I have two more years with my son before he goes off to college and as I said I'd like to get married again, but I don't want to date and I don't want anyone to see my thighs. That cuts the list way down.
Q. Why do you feel you are a spirited woman?
A. Oh. I do have spirit. I am a real, real, real hard worker. I think what I have - sometimes I call it a life force, sometimes I call it optimism - just that excitement about being alive. And sometimes it's contagious, I'm told. I know I am definitely attracted to men and women who have it - and it is a spirit.
THANK YOU MARCIA. YOU ARE AN INSPIRATIONAL WONDER.
