Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
All right, here I sit writing this newsletter. Picture the scene. The clock has just been turned back an hour, the sun is shining, the sky is royal blue, the birds are chirping, and the ocean is a mass of powder blue rolling waves. Talk about a Santa Barbara day! Here I am, in my pink bermuda shorts, dreaming about Christmas, which is less than two months away. Nirvana!
Yes, girls, Christmas is around the proverbial corner and now is a terrific time to support many of the women who've posted listings on the listing board below. Several listings, such as the fantasy shoe calendars and fairy cards make wonderful inexpensive gifts. And do not forget, that giving a SPIRITED WOMAN GIFT CERTIFICATE makes a truly inspirational gift for that special person in your life. A gift to always remember. Plus, next year, there will be over 30 new workshops to choose from!
Things are really moving forward and starting next month I plan to make several announcements about new SPIRITED WOMAN activities and events. I can tell you this, 2005 is going to be a BIGGGGG year. Also, for those of you new to the newsletter this month, I'd like to welcome you to our growing numbers, and I'd like to urge all subscribers to read - from start to finish - the startling Q&A this month with radio personality Bonnie Campbell. In one second, during a brutal attack, her life changed forever, and the courage she has shown is remarkable and very inspirational.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
BONNIE CAMPBELL
Bonnie Campbell is a piercing blue-eyed dynamo. That's a fact. A popular on-air personality, actually the prettier half of KRUZ-FM'S “Bill & Bonnie Morning Show,” in Santa Barbara, Bonnie is extremely well known in the community. I met both Bonnie and Bill for the first time when I was a guest on their radio show in June. As I sat on the couch waiting for my interview to begin, Bonnie struck me as a whirlwind of motion, full of energy, with a warm friendly face, yet underneath that initial impression, I saw a rod of determination. This woman did not get through life by chance. She was focused.
Soon after our interview, Bonnie attended a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop. It was there that I learned more about her. I found out that she was divorced twice, the single mother of two daughters, one of which she gave up for adoption, that she grew up in the little town of La Mesa, in the hills of San Diego, CA and was raised for the first five years of her life in a mountain cabin with no in-door plumbing, that she broke away from her family's Jehovah's Witness faith, and that she was a victim of incest, as was her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She also became the first woman in her family to break the code of silence about it.
It became genuinely apparent that Bonnie, at age 44, had had quite a life of over-coming obstacles and challenges. Yet, two months after the workshop, Bonnie was to be faced with yet another one. On August 29th, a 34-year-old woman, who has had a history of mental problems, randomly attacked Bonnie with a sharp pair of scissors, as she was walking her dog. Severely injured, Bonnie was rushed to the hospital, and from that day forward her life has changed “unbelievably” as she told me.
Presently, her attacker is in jail awaiting the potential of a seven-year sentence, and Bonnie is recovering. She, my friends, is a brave, brave SPIRITED WOMAN. Instead of quitting or giving up, she's fought back and survived. In fact, in many ways she is stronger than she has ever been. Bonnie is lucky to be alive, and we are lucky to have her with us as an inspiration.
Q. Bonnie, you wrote in one of your songs, “It's funny how one moment can change your whole life.” Why don't you tell us what happened to you recently?
A. Two months ago, I just had dinner with my partner Bill Pesso. We were both feeling really good about where we lived and our jobs and everything was going good and I went home to my little apartment and took my little dog out for a walk which I do every night about 9:30 and it was well lit, it was Sunday night, it wasn't late, and I was just walking on my sidewalk, when I heard a woman screaming, and as I turned to face the sound, I realized she was screaming “You can't make me do that anymore.” I only had time to drop the leash, turn, and raise my hand up to ward off this woman and I saw her charging me with her hand raised over her head and she swung at me and came in underneath my rib cage and I thought she punched me, but she was holding open scissors, and she stabbed me and punctured my lung and collapsed it, that fast. She hit me so hard that I was knocked out of my shoes, on my back, unable to breath before I could even say “What.” I have had combat handgun training, hand-to-hand training, first aid and CPR…even carried a knife, all of it, and none of it meant anything. She unprovoked hit me so hard and so fast, had she struck me where she was aiming, which was full on in the chest, I would be dead. Just like that. That fast. Just like a train wreck.
Q. How has being attacked changed your life?
A. In every way. Unbelievable. Like the train analogy - it's as if I was on this northbound train chugging along, nice night, no rain in sight, everything's perfect, and all of a sudden a train out of the west hits you full broadside and knocks you completely off your tracks and you're going a completely different direction with no consent or permission from yourself. No way to minimize the damage done to you, and no control over your new direction. So it challenges everything in your life. From that moment, as I lay on that sidewalk after I managed to fight off the woman who did manage to stab me twice, and bystanders are helping me, and I know that help is coming but I don't know how badly I've been hurt, I lay there thinking I haven't finished my book that I'm writing, I can't believe that I'm going to die on this shitty little sidewalk on a Sunday night through no fault of my own. So, I've had to re-visit every aspect of my life - everything has changed.
Q. Would you like to tell us what has changed?
A. The first thing that changed was, one of my neighbors in my apartment complex, who knew I was attacked, broke into my apartment and stole my purse, cell phone and keys. So I never went back to my apartment. Had to have all my keys change. Move my car. Get a new cell phone. Cancel everything in that apartment, and I was out of house and home in a matter of a few minutes. My boyfriend, who I'd only been seeing two months, took me into his home when I got out of the hospital and I bounced around until I found a new place to live which was much smaller. First I had to heal from the attack. I was in the hospital for three days, and I was off work for a week. Luckily going back to work was great because I could talk about what happened to me. I also had to convince myself that every time I heard a sudden noise, I wasn't going to die. I couldn't sleep for a long time, I started having flashbacks and seeing this woman rushing and attacking me. I had feelings of vulnerability that I'd never experienced before because I'm a strong independent woman, I've been on my own for a very long time, I thought myself capable, strong, able to fight off an attack - I did fight her off, but I could have just as easily been killed, so when I get to work in the morning, it's five o'clock, it's dark, I'm the only one there, and it's an act of will to get out of my car and walk to the front door, and to unlock the door at work and go in and lock the door behind me to overcome that fear. It's an act of will to walk my dog. It's an act of will to go out at night. So I've had to re-learn my place in the world.
Q. What philosophy, attitude, person has helped you get through this period?
A. My philosophy in life is to be positive. I've always found that there's a way to look at what's happened in a positive light. I really feel that even though we've been talking about train wrecks, everything about this attack has been good, in that it's re-focused my life, re-dedicated me to writing a book about the history of women in my family, and my story of being attacked in this random act of violence is going to fit in with my family story of child molestation and abuse. All women attacked sexually or violently suffer these same feelings of guilt and this same code of silence descends upon their lives. Being stabbed has really propelled my desire to finish my book and to speak to women all over the world - who have been victimized in any manner and raise that code of silence.
Q. Could you tell us about the subject matter of your book?
A. The subject matter is the four generations in my family - myself, my mother, her mother and her mother - are victims of incest and the story is how incest is passed down generation through generation, even women to women - not the women molesting each other - but they are assisting in the code of silence that allows the incest to continue. In my case between my mother and myself, added to the code of silence with incest was this cult like religion of Jehovah's Witnesses that kept us entombed, enshrined in this male dominated religion that did not allow us to find anyway to heal. I'm the only woman who broke free of the incest and healed and broke free from the religion and is a full person with a full life and very, very healthy. But, there is a process that you have to go through. I was the first person who stood up, with the help of CALM House (a local charity in Santa Barbara) and said, “No, it will stop.” I broke the code of silence. I said it's happening, it's not going to happen any longer, here is the perpetrator, it's my grandfather, and we had a big family meeting, and it did stop in my family, and people who wanted counseling got it. And my mother did it until the day she died and I finished my therapy and began writing the book two years ago as a way to help other women.
Q. What advice would you like to give to other women who have been through severe trauma?
A. Talk. Talk. Talk. In every regard - your first and best weapon in any attack of any a kind is your voice. It was the only thing that saved me the night I was stabbed. Yelling for help loudly and repeatedly, and after the attack it was my voice that saved me mentally because I had to talk about what happened to me, I had to understand that it wasn't my fault because I felt it was. It was a random attack of violence. This woman was going to come out of her house and stab somebody because she was unbalanced and enraged and she went out to hurt somebody because it would make her feel better. It wasn't my fault and the only thing that saved me and got me on the road to recovery was my voice - talking. Talk to the first person close to you and tell your story. Let them tell you it's not your fault and then start practicing saying, “It's not my fault.” It's not your fault. You were victimized and from there the healing can start. Women who have been victimized by rape, incest, violence display certain physical illnesses if they don't talk about it - migraines, ulcers, unexplained skin rashes, there's a host of physical complaints that are unique and specific. A woman who doesn't speak about what's happened to her is a pressure cooker and you are wearing your physical body down with the energy of withholding a secret and it helps no one, especially not yourself.
Q. Why do you feel you are a Spirited Woman?
A. I'm a spirited woman because I feel the energy moving through me and I'm highly motivated to help other women and I truly believe what's happened to me has a purpose, a reason. I believe I can help motivate women for healing. I have the gift of my voice, my ability to communicate, and the experience of my trials and tribulations through life. I have a way to reach women with a message of hope and a message that you don't have to be alone in fear, you don't have to be silent, and spirited women speak out, and they speak out loudly.
