EDITOR'S MESSAGE

Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD. And a happy, spirited Mother's Day to one and all.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Bring out the SPIRITED WOMAN BAND. The SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter is one year young this month and that is worthy of a BIG toast, a BIG celebration, a BIG party, whatever. Just dance around the house with a flower between your teeth for all of us. As I said in the last newsletter, we are approaching 1200 subscribers strong. Amazing.

And that's not all. The SPIRITED WOMAN Approach to life is growing and growing and growing as well. Since October, 2002, I have taught 31 SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops in nine cities (see list below) to close to 300 women. I find it a fascinating aside that I started my first workshop in Montecito, CA and I will be going to my 10th city - Chicago - next month - both homes of Oprah Winfrey. So, Oprah are you listening?

To celebrate the beginning of year two, I've decided to interview two remarkable women of Chicago, Michele Hoskins and Laura Weathered. Both are visionaries, dreamers, and achievers, who set out to accomplish something and did it in a BIG WAY. Coincidentally, both were greatly influenced by their great-great-grandmothers. What better way to bring in a new year than with these two fascinating women who plan to attend my Chicago workshops.

So, I say hip, hip hooray to all of you - all over the globe. And I want to thank you many times over for your unwavering support, ever-flowing enthusiasm, and friendship. YOU inspire me, always. I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop in your city.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
Michele Hoskins and Laura Weathered

Sometimes, someone just literally leaps off the page. That is exactly what happened when I found Michele Hoskins while I was surfing the web. I had been looking for dynamic women to interview in Chicago - and when I found Michele serendipitously (are there any accidents?), she really and truly spoke to me. I was beyond elated when she said "yes" to our interview. 

Michele Hoskins, age 54, is one of the most successful African-American woman entrepreneurs in American today. Talk about a risk-taker. Twenty years ago Michele was a divorced, ex-schoolteacher with a dream and an an idea. Armed with a secret family syrup recipe, she decided to sell everything that she owned, move herself and her three daughters into her mother's attic, so that she could raise capital for her new business, and proceeded to make her product in the basement. The rest as they say is what legends are made of.

Today, her company, Michele Foods, is a multi-million dollar enterprise that sells syrups, the most famous being HoneyCreme syrup, to over 10,000 grocery retail chains in the United States. She now employs two of her daughters as well as several other employees, and the attic needless to say has been replaced by a beautiful home in the suburbs, where she lives with her two dogs.

Michele has won countless entrepreneur awards, appeared on Oprah's show three times, been featured in People and Fortune magazines, and in November she has a new book coming out called Sweet Expections. Michele is quite a woman. If all goes well with re-arranging her schedule, she plans to be at the SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop in Chicago on Sunday, June 6th. I guarantee you, she will be a treat for you to meet. Below, Michele offers some wonderful insights.

Q. What gave you the guts and determination to start your own business and to stick with it for over 19 years?
A. Well, it was my great-great-grandmother’s recipe and she was a slave, and when I realized what that meant, I was a young girl. I kind of always had it in the back of my mind that she was probably very entrepreneurial in spirit. She was emancipated in 1860 something. I have three daughters, so my drive and my determination was that my daughters would not have to struggle or be under someone elses thumb. To do that I felt that I should position myself to be CEO of a company, so I decided to make it my own company. The fact that I have three daughters and that I wanted to show them what a successful African-American woman looked like has always been the fire under my belt to persevere.

Q. Have you always been a self-believer? And why do you think you are one? 
A. I was always curious as a child on why things happen. When I went off to college I ran across a Buddhist philosophy that said you could control your own destiny. You have to atone for things you do – the cause and affect principle. I applied these principles early on and saw that they really worked - you reap what you sow. I felt if I put myself in a position to succeed that's what I would get in return. I majored in world religion in college and I got a very good understanding about philosophies, religion and spirituality. I actually came back and taught it in high school. It is where my belief stays – I understand that you write your own destiny and I have applied those principles and seen that they are really accurate and that they work.

Q. Michele, who showed you the way in business? Did you have any mentors?
A. When I started my business 20 years ago there were no mentors for my field. The food industry is the good old boy system and African-Americans were not in it, women were not in it, and especially African-American women who owned their own company and had a product they had developed and actually gotten ready for retail. So when I looked around there was no one to hold my hand. Again, I had to reach back to my spirituality, go back to my mom and my family values, get the strength to persevere and understand that this is something I had to be a pioneer in. I had to pave the way for others. There weren’t any hands-on mentors, but I had mentors such as my mom and Madame J. Walker, who was the first African-American woman millionaire. My mom only had a high-school education, but she always instilled in me that I could be anything that I wanted to be and Madame Walker’s story inspired me. I even got the first Madame J. Walker Spirit Award in 1998.

Q. What words of wisdom, advice do you have for any woman in business today?
A. Anything the mind can conceive can manifest through hard work, perseverance and faith. You can be whatever you want to be. You really write your own script, your own destiny. We are the writers of our world. And once we realize that, and realize that when we claim something and want something and have said that – it is on its way to you. You just have to understand not to discount it or to put any obstacles in front of you or feel you cannot do it. If you say, "I will be a very successful entrepreneur," let it go at that –it will manifest.  But if you say, "I want to be, but I don’t think I can be," then no you won’t be. I think if we all understand that we control our own destinies by our words and our actions and ideas – I think women, men, alike, everyone will be much better off. But I don’t believe a lot of us apply that principle  - that’s the principle of life.

Q. Michele, why do you feel you are a spirited woman?
A. I am very spiritual and I have based my life and my business on my spirituality – the fact that I believe very strongly in prayer and the fact that I believe you can achieve anything you want in life. My spirituality has steered me in my business, helped me be very optimistic about its growth and in achieving my goals and overcoming obstacles such as health and finances. I’ve always believed I am a spirited woman.

Q. How and why did you become an activist in housing?
A. I became an activist through the years. What I saw happen to other artists and my experience as a working artist renting studios was that we were constantly getting pushed out of our neighborhood. I was literally pushed out of my studios every couple of years. I had to pick up and relocate. Also, Jane Jacobs, who wrote this magazine article in 1968, "Life in the American City," really inspired me. She wrote a critique of planning decisions in the United States and about her New York neighborhood and what was vibrant about it. She had no training in planning. It all sort of came together for me and I also involved myself with a group of like-minded people. 

Q. What was your vision for the Acme Artists Community?
A. I’m a visual artist, so when I go work in my studio I want to shut the door and keep the world at bay. But when I want to bring it to a larger community, I need a gallery, an agent, an exhibit or a festival - I need some larger structure to help bring that public to me. Thinking of it cooperatively, as a group, I knew there was a way to increase my share of the market. That sounds so corporate - but anyway, if I want to reach out to a larger market, I’d be a lot more effective doing it with a group of people who can share their talents and resources than just me by myself. I realized as an individual I don’t have access to the resources to bring capital, but as a group we could. So that was the vision.

Q. What’s your basic philosophy that keeps you going?
A. I was an over-achiever when I was in girl scouts, I earned every badge I could and I joined my sister's group because mine wasn’t working fast enough. I’m also the oldest of five children and I come from a long line of entrepreneurs and risk takers. On my trek through life, I found out that my great-great-grandmother and her mother were mid-wives who immigrated from Germany to Chicago and provided maternity services to immigrant mothers here. That was inspiring to me, because I feel like I'm hard wired for recognizing opportunities and bringing collectives together.

Q. Looking at what you’ve done – how does it make you feel?
A. Very satisfied. We’ve created something new that is unique, that quite a few people are getting excited about for populations other than artists. It’s a way of creating home ownership for low and moderate-income level families in an extraordinarily competitive market and it doesn’t diminish their investment. I’m really proud of that. Also, there is an initiative coming out of the Department of Cultural Affairs, actually the Department of Housing hired me to do marketing to create more communities – so it’s being tested to be incorporated into their five year plan. That’s a tremendous achievement and I’m really proud of that, too.

Q. Laura, why do you feel you are a spirited woman?
A. I’m living my life by choice and using my talents and resources to make some changes in society that I think are relevant. Ever since I was 30, when I went to Europe and realized what was really important in my life, I have made choices about what I needed to do, what I knew I had within my power to visualize. I recognized there was a path to follow and I didn’t know where it was going to end up but I trusted my instincts were good and that I would find a collected spirit to keep me going in that direction. At the age of 30 I saw what my destiny was going to be and I feel good because I’m doing what I’m good at.

Hi Alex and Elena! You are both amazing phaopgrothers and would love to learn from you too. As a kid I always loved photography, posing my pets and anyone else who would be willing to pose. My photo albums are my most prizes possessions. When the question of “If your house is on fire and you could only take one thing with you, what would it be?” As long as my family, friends, and pets were safe, it would hands down be me photo albums. I love them!!! Photographs have the power to allow someone to relive a moment in time and that is what I love the most about photography. The ability to capture a moment so beautifully for years to come is so amazing to me. As a budding photographer, that is what I want to give my clients, especially new parents. When will those sweet babies ever be that size again. Within a matter of days they begin to change so much!I would love the opportunity to attend this workshop and learn more about newborn posing. I was fortunate to attend a workshop by Alex in January but still want to take soak up all there is to know about newborn photography. In January I was still very much new to photography since leaving it behind during my childhood. There was so much to take in and now that I have more experience, this would be another incredible experience to learn from not one but two fantastic phaopgrothers! I would love to learn more about posing, especially posing twins! That is one part of the workshop I am most excited about! I’m also excited to learn about posing infants and tips on how to run a successful business (especially now that I am more confident that I could be a photographer)! The infants posing is especially important because after newborn comes infants and I want to be able to establish relationships with my clients, to continue having the opportunity to capture their family’s history. I hope to be attending your workshop later this month. This workshop will be a wonderful opportunity for whoever wins!

liked both pages and i shared your pages with my frnieds.My name is Ashley. I am a army wife and mother of 4 who is obviously in love with babies. i have given birth to my fair share of them. I finally decided to make my obsession of photography a business on april 28, 2011 and i feel i am doing incredible BUT I am always trying to better myself. I tested for years (before i started my business) to try and figure out what exactly i would like to have as my specialty. so tons of famil, couples, engagement and newborn sessions later I figured out that babies make my hearts melt and put a smile on my face. I am a very afforable newborn photographer charging only 150.00. i have sessions that last an hr and even some in the 5 hr range. I noticed that i never got frustrated, tired or fed up no matter how long they last. God has blessed me with the family i have and now my job. I would like to be the BEST newborn photographer i can be. We move all the time. ( 4 times in 3 yrs) it is so hard to start over everywhere i moved but pictures speak a 1000 words and if i could get the opportunity to go to this workshop and have it be free it would just be another blessing by god and some really rockin ladies that are offering their brains to be picked and talent to be shown to me, just a mom with a camera and a passion to make a beautiful baby a piece of art and a family tresure that can be shared for years to come. thank you for offering this. hope i am picked
