SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
I find Barbara Lanz-Mateo to be refreshingly candid, inspirational and gutsy. I first met Barbara at my November 2002 Spirited Woman Workshop, where she was a spirited attendee. Fate it must have been. For it was in November that Barbara had just published the first issue of her new magazine Coastal Woman - and I thought at the time wouldn't it be great to interview her.
What most of you don't know about Barbara is that her first career was in gas and oil in Littleton, CO. She graduated in business from the University of Denver in her 30's (while raising two daughters solo and working full time), got remarried, moved to Santa Barbara in 1991, cried everyday her first two years here - no friends, no jobs, only VERY clean toilets - entered the writing program at SBCC, and then in her 40's started a whole new chapter in her life, career and psyche.
She became a PAID journalism writer and editor. And she was loving it. She worked for the Montecito Magazine, the Goleta Valley Voice, and the now defunct Silicon 2.0...but even then she wanted more. It wasn't until she received a few resume rejections and signed up for the business plan course at Women's Economic Venture (WEV) that her new life and her Coastal Woman dream took off.
Q. Was there a moment when something clicked in your head and said, "I want to create my own magazine?"
A. Kinda. I read some place there is always two reasons you do something. The reason you do it and the real reason. I can say the reason I am doing this is because I want to be an advocate for women, which is true I do, but the real reason I started it was kind of an act of desperation. I needed to get some work. It's expensive to live here. I needed to be fulfilled. I just couldn't see myself doing nothing. I'd had it with working for crummy publishers - frankly. I figured if I'm going to work for stupid publishers, I might as well work for myself, so I could be the stupid publisher.
Q. Why did you decide to direct your magazine to women?
A. Every time I was out writing about people, I always found the stories about women the most interesting and mostly because they had so much on their plate. They had careers, children, did volunteer work, kept a house. It blew me away what they were able to accomplish. Especially when I worked in technology. These women were like inventing things and I was just amazed and I wanted to know how they did it. I just found it inspirational what they were doing.
Q. How did WEV help you in starting Coastal Woman?
A. I enrolled in spring 2001 and by the time I graduated, about four months later, I had a business and I was actually moving forward with the magazine. I thought when I started WEV, I would find out why I couldn't do this. And so I started the research, the questionnaires, and I researched the industry and I couldn't find any reasons why I shouldn't do this. I kept on thinking I don't know what I am doing. I really thought I'd go through the class, hear why I couldn't do it, and it would fill enough time so I could find a real job. How could I think of something successful?
Q. How is Coastal Woman doing now?
(It should be noted that Barbara and her husband funded the startup of the magazine.)
A. It's doing well. I'm shocked. The response has been fabulous, more than I ever hoped. I started out at 5,000 and we're up to 9,000. We're on the verge of getting ready to expand. We're very close to being self-supporting. I don't have any overhead. It's all electronic. I do it from my home office and the woman who sells my ads, my only employee, works out of her home.
Q. Tell me why you are a SPIRITED WOMAN?
A. When you think of the word spirited you think about things like "jumping up and down" and being giddy and happy, but to me it is beyond that. It is about having a connection to things outside yourself. Whether it is being connected to nature, your children, to other women. I take spirited more in the literal sense of spirit. I guess what makes me a spirited woman is because it's not all about me, it's about my kids, the privilege to live here and to following my passion and people telling me I am nuts, I shouldn't be doing this. Oh well, they're wrong (she laughs heartily). I'm either a genius or an idiot. I'll let you know in two years.
THANK YOU BARBARA. YOU GO GIRL.
