SPIRITED WOMAN QUOTE
"When you listen to the truth of your soul – there is nothing else that matters – no one’s opinions, or reactions, or comments. Nothing."- Nancy Mills

EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
I’ve literally just returned from teaching my workshops in Las Vegas and at Curves Ft. Mojave. Wow oh wow. The workshops went just great! And the women I met were phenomenal. Close to 50 women attended the workshops last month, which is a huge leap in numbers in Spirited Woman Land – and the biggest month ever in terms of workshop attendance.
Plus, the LA workshops at the Black Box Theater were simply fantastic. The women loved the space, and really let it rip on the stage. I urge you to come to the March 20 or 21st workshop in LA at the same theater. I promise you, you will LOVE IT.
Be sure to read the interview this month. Mimi Latt is a wunderkind – best-selling author, lawyer, painter, wife, mother, grandmother – her story is one of just how important it is to follow your instincts and to let your true passions lead the way.
The SPIRITED WOMAN newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women nationwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments enthusiasm, and friendship. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop in your city.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
Mimi Latt
I met Mimi Latt, 64, for the first time at one of my Spirited Woman Workshops in LA. She had read about it, and in her response to me, wrote that she was a writer. So, prior to her coming I read about Mimi on her Website: mimilatt.com. I was blown away! A best-selling suspense author was coming to my workshop! But, that was not all. Her personal story was amazing, too. And after meeting Mimi, I knew why. Her intelligent eyes, kind face, and determined smile told it all.
Mimi Latt has always followed her heart. Bucked the odds. And reinvented herself successfully. Divorced with a child by 20, Mimi re-married by the time she was 23. She went on to have more children, became a portrait painter in her twenties, got accepted to law school at 32 (without completing college), graduated with honors, founded her own law practice where she became known for representing battered women, and then in her late-forties left law to become a writer.
Since then, she has written three books, Powers of Attorney, Pursuit of Justice, and Ultimate Justice, and she is working on her forth. Whew! Her books have appeared on both the USA Today Bestseller list and the Los Angeles Times Bestseller list. She has sold hundreds of thousands of book, which is not bad for a late in life career!
Mimi, who lives in the hills of LA with her husband Aaron Latt, a renowned wood sculptor, is all about change and focus. Doing what you want to do when you need to do it. I believe you will enjoy reading about Mimi, and I would personally like to thank Mimi for walking into my life. You’ve made it a more inspirational place!
Q. Why do you think you’ve changed careers several times?
A. I think that I was born a very multi-faceted person. I spent a lot of years trying to figure out what I wanted and needed. There were these creative needs in me and there were these intellectual needs and this need to prove myself and to be just as good as a guy. I think in life we learn by doing and if we don’t risk the various things that we want to try then we don’t know or we spend our whole life wondering what would have been. It wasn’t until I was practicing law that I realized I could be an excellent lawyer, but the law really wasn’t good for me. It was intellectually stimulating…but I was born with such a sense of responsibility that the whole time I practiced law, I felt constantly on edge, worried, and responsible for other people…so I got burned out. The only time I felt completeness was when I was writing in the law, like a trial brief. It was kind of deciding what did I love and want. It was also a decision with my husband and I - we had been on a very materialistic quest- and we came to the realization that money wasn’t the total thing that motivated us and made us happy. We didn’t need to be billionaires. We both had these other parts of our personality and that gave me permission to go into writing.
Q. Your husband is a big influence in your life, how has he supported you?
A. He has been really phenomenal. He is kind of like my dad in that way. He thinks that I can do anything I want to do, so that kind of gives me the courage. On the one hand, it is scary because he expects so much, but on the other hand it’s like go ahead, I know you can do it. So you feel there is somebody behind you that doesn’t think you are totally crazy. When I gave up my law practice and began to get into the writing, I cannot tell you how many people said I was nuts. But those same people said I was nuts when I went to law school, too. I find that listening to other people doesn’t always do it, but to have your family support you is very important to me and we have always supported each other. We did go through some financial reverses – we lost most of our money – and that was the time that we really made some decisions as to what we wanted to do with our lives. I think it is through crisis and adversity that you learn what’s important to you and what you want out of life. He’s always been incredibly supportive and I’ve been there for him too. We’re going to be celebrating our 41st anniversary.
Q. Mimi, what led you to write suspense novels?
A. In the beginning, I just wanted to write stories about women. I’d actually thought of being a writer early in my life. Before I went to law school, I sent away for a creative writing correspondence class but it just seemed so hard, because it wasn’t like law school where you take these courses and do this and this and you pass the bar. Bam! You’re a writer. It just didn’t happen that way and it was scary. When I left my first husband at 19 and a half, I actually started a book. I had two other friends in the same place – we were three young divorced women with children. I’d forgotten about this until my father passed away and I found the four chapters I’d written and it was about three women in our position. So when I started to think about writing it was about three women, but it was about three women lawyers. If you read my first book, it is about three women lawyers, and that’s kind of how it evolved into a suspense novel – whenever I talked about the legal stuff they (the characters) just sat up - it was like I could just feel the energy in the room. It dawned on me that people really liked to hear about it and the more they liked to hear about it the more I enjoyed writing it. There were a number of experiences in my legal profession that I used - all of my books are based on fact, real life situations that caused me to write them. They’ve triggered my imagination. You play what if. It’s just the way your unconscious mind takes over.
Q. How long did it take you to write "Powers of Attorney," your first book? And how did you sell it?
A. Five years. I networked like crazy to find an agent. I spent about six months researching what agents represented what kind of books. I decided who I wanted to try and I started networking. I went on this very tenuous thing of somebody who said they knew somebody and I contacted them. They weren’t that interested but they said for me to send a little bit about what the book was like, not the manuscript, but a synopsis, a short one. So I sent it and the agent called me and she said this is fabulous. I can’t wait to read the book itself. She asked me to send the manuscript. But she wanted it cut down, it was 1100 pages, so I worked on it with her. Then we sold it to Simon & Schuster and they wanted it cut down, too. I was very lucky, the first agent I submitted it to said yes. I’m still with her.
Q. In your three books to date, your leading characters are strong women lawyer protagonists -heroines. Tell us about that.
A. Again, I like to play, "what if" and I like to put women into difficult situations – moral and ethical dilemmas. I feel what really makes a character and makes us in our real lives is not how well we do when things are going well but how we do when things aren’t going well. How we make decisions when we are under tremendous pressure. That is the real test of who you are as a character and who you are as a person. Part of that is because of my background. My father was a Talmudic scholar and that’s the way he raised me to question everything and that’s why I did so well in law school. I was always playing "what if this, what if that." I could always see both sides of the issue. I’m a product of my time, and the fact that we as women had to fight for where we are today is important and I just felt women’s stories had to be told. When I was in law school, I don’t know if I would have made it without the support of other women in my class. We shared some really rough times and played a significant part in each other’s lives.
Q. Why do you think your books have become bestsellers?
A. They are fun to read…interesting… page-turners. I think the first obligation of an author is to entertain, to engage the reader and be a good storyteller. You can have a wonderful concept, wonderful character, wonderful plot but if you don’t put it all together into a meaningful story that makes people wonder what is going on…it’s difficult. I work very hard at accomplishing that. I try to write what I enjoy reading and I enjoy reading something that ties up the loose ends – it might have some ethical and moral questions. I want people to walk away from my books thinking I wonder what I would have done. If you tell it in a story telling way, then people want to read it. Who knows it just happened…I think I tell a really good story, okay! That’s embarrassing me, I don’t know why they buy them. I do get lots of letters and e-mails of people who just love them.
Q. Why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. Because I think I have really learned to get in touch with that spirited side of me, the creativeness inside of me, and I do have this incredible connection to other women. I love men don’t get me wrong, but I love women just as much. I have a couple of girlfriends and we go away a couple of times a year, and we spend three days laughing. Women are so lucky that we have each other. I’m very intuitive and empathic and I have just learned to listen to that inner voice. I just feel something inside of me that moves me, that makes me feel like I have a spirit within me.
THANK YOU MIMI. A TOAST TO YOUR NEXT BESTSELLER!

AND NOW FOR THE THANKS!!!!!!!
COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU – Banner, read the headline. Trish Williamson-Bastian deserves kudos, numerous thanks, and way beyond. She arranged three fantastic workshops in Las Vegas and there is no way I could have done these workshops without her and her fantastic husband Jon. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. Also, their house is gorgeous and I loved my comfy room!
Michaele Harrington worked her buns off (in her case, that’s a good thing, since she manages CURVES Ft. Mojave) to get the women to attend the workshops. No way, no how could I have done this without Michaele’s unwavering support. Plus, I LOVED doing the workshop at CURVES – the atmosphere was just amazing. A HUGE THANK YOU to Michaele, her boss, Lindy, and co-worker Barbara.
MORE THANKS - To the many wonderful spirited women who have attended the workshops. You are ALL fantabulous and fun.
