EDITOR'S MESSAGE
The second SPIRITED WOMAN newsletter has arrived. FANTABULOUS. Are we spirited or what? Of course we are. The first newsletter took off like a she-bang. Close to 500 spirited women read it. Seems as though many of you forwarded it along to your friends. WOW. And truth be told, someone heard the mayor on State Street yelling "I AM A SPIRITED WOMAN." Just amazing.
The SPIRITED WOMAN newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected. So let the party begin.
And once again on a personal note, I would like to thank you all for your support, comments, suggestions, and friendship. Means a lot.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
PATTY CLARKE
I originally met Patty Clarke in 1996. At the time I was living in LA, publishing my own newsletter, Travelin' Woman and leading travel empowerment seminars for women. I asked Patty to be one of my speakers, for I was fascinated by this amazing renaissance woman. Recently, Patty attended my Spirited Woman Workshop and it was great to reconnect. She is now the Director of Foundation Operations and Development for the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation.
What a life Patty's led. She comes from a family of eight sisters. Her family moved to Santa Barbara from Hollywood, CA right after Patty finished high school. Bitten with the travel bug, in 1974, at age 20, she and her young husband flew to Europe bought a VW van and traveled the continent. Yearning for more adventure, they hopped on a Mercedes Benz truck, and spent four and a half months driving across the Sahara desert in Africa.
Several years later, now with two young kids in tow, the couple bought a car and a trailer, and drove through France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. The family lived in a villa on the Mediterranean in Southern Spain and a farm house in Italy. They learned Italian and Spanish fluently. And Patty not only studied classical guitar abroad but wrote a book about the family's experiences called "Waiter, There's A Worm in My Orange Juice."
In between her numerous trips to roughly 50 countries, Patty, an award-winning photographer, batik teacher, and collage artist, also co-founded in 1980 with her husband (Patty's now divorced) Homes for People, a long-running affordable housing non-profit, in which over 100 homes were built in Santa Barbara. She also supervised the unique El Zoco Artist Live/Work Affordable Housing Project on Gutierrez Street.
Today, Patty, is deeply involved with the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation, where she has helped raise over $6 million dollars since her arrival in March 2000. Wow!
Q. How did you get involved with the bowl?
A. It links back because one of the guys on the board for Homes for People is also on the board at the bowl. He is the chair of the facilities committee which oversees all the upgrades and construction. Because of my building and non-profit background he wanted me to be on his committee. So I started volunteering in 1997. At the time I had my own travel business. I volunteered for the committee for two to three years, then they were looking for a director of development and I got the job.
Q. What are your responsibilities at the bowl?
A. To manage the foundation side. The foundation raises money for the construction capital campaign, which includes the reconstruction of the bowl, and for SAGE (Schools, Arts, Gifts, and Education) which is a school arts program where we give back to the community.
Q. What gives you the greatest satisfaction doing this work?
A. Bringing joy to people. It's being at a show when you see 4,000 people joyful and relaxed and seeing their friends and listening to incredible music in this setting that I think is a sacred place. It is an amazing experience.
Q. Tell me how Babes at the Bowl got started?
A. It got started because we had just finished a $6 million dollar project and that included the largest ladies room in Santa Barbara County. Coming from a family of eight girls that was a big deal. Out of the blue, I just thought it would be fun to have a party in the bathroom. I was hesitant to tell anybody about this, but people seemed to really like the idea and it sort of mushroomed and in seven weeks we put it together. Our goal was to have 300 people and 314 showed up. We created drinks like the Tidy Bowl and Royal Flush, and we had the women brought up in limousines and served champagne by men waiters. It's all about honoring women and having fun and being kind of zany. This year there's a karaoke contest, so you'll have a chance to sing on stage. We're expecting over 600 to attend. The dress is Rock Star VIP.
Q. Patty, why do you feel you are Spirited Woman?
A. I feel that I am a Spirited Woman because I am not afraid of life and all its facets. Grief or joy or a scary plane trip or whatever. I think just being open to all kinds of experiences. I try not to let hard times get me down, so that I don't feel I can't go forward. I try to always look forward. Forward motion is like 'wow', I'm almost 50, and I think I am starting the best part of my life.
THANK YOU PATTY. YOU GO BABE.
The second annual BABES AT THE BOWL is July 19, 2003, from 5-8 pm. Ticket cost is $65. To reserve a seat call 962-7411 or e-mail pattyclarke@sbbowl.com.
