The Q& A this month is with JJ DiGeronimo, a true visionary in the field of technology. JJ is a cutting-edge entrepreneur, a sought after technology speaker and consultant, and best of all, my friend. She’s been beyond helpful to me on my long web quest (which has been a tortuous two-year ride that I will be sharing with you soon), and I know you will all benefit from her words of wisdom regarding websites and more. Read on – her answers are pearls.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
JJ DiGeronimo
They say it all starts with an idea. And Cleveland-based JJ DiGeronimo had a terrific one a few years back when she started her own web-based company TechStudents.Net. At the ripe age of 30, it became apparent to JJ, who studied computer science at Ohio University, that entrepreneurs and small businesses needed affordable technology resources, and that college students, who could supply those services needed jobs.
Now, two years later, one might call her a successful technology matchmaker. Her site (www.techstudents.net), which started in the summer of 2004, currently receives over 2000 visitors a month. Over 800 students have registered for technology jobs, and about a hundred businesses across the nation, have signed-up for students to create their websites and more.
I originally found out about JJ earlier this year, when I read about her on the Ladies Who Launch website (which is terrific, by the way). I was immediately bowled over by her credentials such as she’s in Who’s Who in Technology and by her business concept – because I thought it was so valuable. Within a few days after reading that article, I called her, and through a series of phone calls, we’ve struck up a friendship – even though we have never met in person.
JJ is not only smart but a truly compassionate person, and without some of her valuable input my life would not be the same. She’s chock full of ideas, fortitude, and enthusiasm. I think you will find her interview to be of great value to your business or your life. Read on sisters, read on.
Q. What gave you the idea for your company?
A. When I moved to Cleveland I had trouble landing a high-tech job similar to the one I had in Atlanta and San Francisco, and I started to volunteer around the community with things that were of interest to me and I found myself spending a lot of time with entrepreneurs, and in the evenings I would teach technology classes at the local community college and I quickly identified that individually I could not meet all of the technology demands of many of the small businesses I was working with on a volunteer basis. And, at the same time I had a classroom of students that could not find internships – so I started manually connecting the two. Then I decided to make it into a business.
Q. What makes you so passionate about what you do?
A. I am a connector. From “The Tipping Point,” I’m definitely a connector. Which is an excellent book. They break people down into three things: maverick, connector, and I can’t remember the third. But I’m definitely a connector by heart, and to me, there is no more joy than making two people benefit from one another through my connection of the two. I love this and once again, I love the idea of creating something from scratch and that it’s gaining grass roots momentum. It’s just really exciting.
Q. Your company has received so much press. Why do you think that’s so?
A. A lot of cold calling. Back to my sales days, I had to pick up the phone and call random CIO’s throughout the country pitching different products or solutions and I learned very quickly that it is all a numbers game. And so I’ve taken the same approach for my business, but the great thing about my business is that I actually believe in the company and I really do believe it’s a demand that is not currently being met. So it’s wonderful to make 10 calls and you finally get that 10th caller – someone picks up the phone and you show them the company and site and what it does – and they’re like this is great. So repetition and being able to be turned down and denied over and over again.
Q. What are the most important factors, someone needs to consider when developing a website?
A. Knowing who your audience is, first and foremost. What type of information do you want to provide to that audience and what do you want them to do once they are on the site. So that’s one big component. The second component is that there is a whole search engine optimization side, that if you want your site to come up on the search engines – there is three things you need to do – you need to have consistent content on the front of the page, consistent content behind the page and the code, and companies linking to your website. It’s really important to link to other websites that have higher ranking on Google than you do. Google has a free tool that you can download to see how your pages rank. And there’s a whole check list on the site, such as making sure that the name you are using for your website has not been previously trademarked. Another thing is finding a host that has traction tools so you can you can see who’s hitting your website, when they’re hitting it, what they’re searching for. I use a great tool called Click Alert. And the final thing is to have the capability to update your content – it’s really important to keep your content fresh.
Q. Give us the most important “don’ts” when constructing a website?
A. I think the biggest don’t is to build a website and then don’t do any of the legwork to connect your site to other sites or to include it in directories – such as the yahoo directory. So you can have your website but if you don’t promote it at all, it’s a complete waste because it is very rare that someone’s going to find you unless you point someone to your site. You need to think of it as a product in itself.
Q. Websites are expensive – how can working with students save someone money?
A. These days most students have to build websites in their classes as part of their program, so often time students have a lot of experience building websites. Much more than they did even two and five years ago. So students are looking for the opportunity to use all of their creative skills and to help a business grow at a very affordable rate. Most students that I’ve seen work for about $10-20 an hour. In fact, I use three technology students for my site.
Q. What advice would you give us about navigating internet technology?
A. I put together a selecting technology step-by-step guide. A lot of times businesses get so excited about new technology that they make the plunge into the technology when they really didn’t do the research and figure out what problems they’re trying to solve and how it’s going to integrate into an existing solution. So it’s a step-by-step guide of what you need to research and put together before you even select any type of technology. Also, in our community we have a technology group that I go to ask advice from – it’s an open group for anyone who wants to attend. And, one thing that I use a lot are online virtual networks (such as blogs), where I can ask people what they’re using and try to get an overall sense of the popular solution.
Q. JJ, why do you feel you are a spirited woman?
A. I’m a spirited woman, because I feel like I work from the inside out. I do things that feel good and feel right and make sense to my soul. And I feel that I’m still working on the process of listening to my inner voice. But, it seems that every time I do, it really directs me to the right place. When I look back at the last five years and I go through all my notes and the meetings I’ve gone to, it was an evolution as to where I am now, but when I was in it, I didn’t realize it. I had to go through every step to get where I am now. I really believe what Oprah said. She said it is our responsibility to figure out why we’re here. I live by that everyday.

SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP AT SANTA BARBARA WINERIES – One of my workshop attendees in Nashville brought three bottles of champagne to the workshop. When I asked her why, she said, “Well, you said it was spirited.” That said, it got me thinking – wouldn’t the SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop be great fun at a winery? After all, I live near “Sideways” country, where wineries abound, and the setting is peaceful and gorgeous. I’ve already got one of these workshops planned for May 6th of next year with the famous Santa Barbara woman winemaker Lane Tanner, but I’d like to do one in 2005. Any leads or suggestions?
SPIRITED WOMAN PRODUCTS – Right now, we’re selling fabulous scarves at our workshops, and look forward to selling them and many more things to you directly via the internet. We’re really excited about our new, original product line. Say yes – to colorful, fun, and empowering.
SPIRITED WOMAN LUNCHEON - In addition to the summer barbecue, the workshops, the newsletter, TheSpiritedWomanBlog, a new SPIRITED WOMAN product line, and the upcoming website, what better way for spirited women to stay connected than at an inspirational lunch. TRAINING SPIRITED WOMAN FACILITATORS - Yes, it had to happen. There have been several women across the United States, who are very interested in being trained to lead SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops. This program is still in the works, and if all goes as planned, will be in place later this year.
