EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Three strikes and you're out! No, you're not. This is the third SPIRITED WOMAN newsletter and well, quite frankly, we're hitting a home run. Life's fun. And totally unknown. Who would have thought that from one SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP flier on the Sojourner bulletin board last October an industry would be born. Next up a WEB site and then who knows - maybe a spirited man.
The SPIRITED WOMAN newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected. Be sure to check out our message board this month - many new spirited women have listed. Great stuff!

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
FREDERICA WELCH
Sometimes you meet someone who changes your life - emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Frederica Welch is one of those people for me. I first met Frederica in May 2001 when she was giving a workshop on Aura-soma at the Paradise Found Bookstore. I was a mess then - I had recently moved up from LA, left a disastrous relationship, felt very lost and alone, and didn't have a clue if I wanted to stay in Santa Barbara. I needed a friend and some guidance.
Well, the gods were watching over me. Right after our fated encounter, I began to work with Frederica, who is a Reiki-master and an Aura-soma practitioner. Not only was relief soon in sight but a deep friendship blossomed.
Frederica has lived in Santa Barbara most of her sixty-two years. In addition to being a very gifted healer, she is also a wife, mother, grandmother, social activist, teacher, transformational thinker and a community volunteer. Presently, in between her thriving practice, she volunteers at the Breast Resource Center of Santa Barbara doing Reiki. Whew!
Frederica has attended two Spirited Woman Workshops. Not only do I feel flattered and supported, but I feel that that's Frederica way. She is a woman who is passionate about life and enjoys it everyday. I thought you would all like to meet my wise crone, my dear friend, Frederica Welch.
Q. You are part of the bridge generation. Tell us how it affected your life?
A. Like other women my age, I was raised with the values of the 50's. I graduated from college in 1962 when divorce was uncommon and abortions illegal. My college experience was that of prior decades - no resistance, little questioning, lots of conforming. Yet, I witnessed the beginning of the protest movement in 1963 - the same year that The Pill arrived and the Viet Nam War. A few years later I felt that I had more in common with people 20 years my senior than I did with people five years younger. So, I have lived the mainstream life as well as in my 40's actively questioning who I was and what I wanted.
Q. Did you have a transformative experience in your 40's?
A. Yes. Several of my friends had gone to the Brugh Joy: Foundational Conference, so I went in 1994. Brugh Joy is a former heart/lung specialist. He left his practice and he works from this place where you have to be willing to go into the deeper patterns or forces - inside and out. You must look at the larger things. He does a lot with intuition, energy, oracles, music, and sound. Since that workshop I have made a complete change. I went from using my nickname Ricki to my birthname Frederica which symbolized for me coming into a full, mature, place of identity and out of an invisible spot. Something inside of me just shifted. Since then, I've been willing to know myself and reveal myself. I even was introduced to Reiki there.
Q. What is Reiki?
A. Reiki is a simple, ancient hands-on system of healing touch with origins from the Tibetan Sutras. The touch of Reiki is gentle, soothing, stress releasing, loving and relaxing. It has been found to reduce pain, relieve stress, and assist recovery and well-being. Reiki flows from the hands of the practitioner transmitting vital life force energy to balance and heal on all levels. It is used by many caregivers and health professionals. Reiki has been found to be very effective in reducing the side effects of chemotherapy and is available free of charge to any breast cancer patient at the Breast Resource Center of Santa Barbara.
Q. I've found Aura-soma to be transformational. Would you explain what it is?
A. Aura-soma is a color energy tool that helps us to find the purpose of our life's journey and answers the question, "Who am I?" This self-selective system of over 100 dual-colored bottles empowers you to discover your individual gifts as well as what underlies your personality issues and life challenges. The bottles are filled with living energy - the energy of color, herbal extracts, essential oils, gems and crystals. Our body's energy centers, or chakras, resonate to particular wavelengths of color. When we feel "off color" one or more of our energy centers is out of balance. The bottles set in motion processes which encourage our body's natural rhythm, which can renew harmony and well-being to the body, mind and spirit.
Q. Frederica, why do you feel you are a Spirited Woman?
A. This morning I was thinking of the title "Spirited Woman" and it is interesting because my whole life has been a spiritual search. So I think I am spirited because I am passionate. And that I look at the ordinary and find miracles in it. I don't take anything for granted - hopefully, I try not to. I live through my passion and my core beliefs. That's my spirit.
