Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
Well, we've arrived. It's 2005 and we're into year #3 in SPIRITED WOMANLAND. Who-ee! Hip, hip hooray, and all that. But on a much less joyous note, I am sure many of you are deeply saddened by the thousands of precious lives lost to the tsunami last month. It is an unfathomable tragedy, and because of its dire impact, I've set up the SPIRITED WOMAN TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORT. All proceeds raised will go directly to the American Red Cross- International Response Fund. Please read this new section, which is below the listing board, for more details.
Starting January 23rd the popular SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop resumes. Be sure to check out the calendar - since there are mucho workshops upcoming this winter in LA, Santa Barbara, San Diego, and San Francisco. The workshops are booking-up fast, so it's a good idea to SIGN-UP NOW. And for those of you in the Seattle/Tacoma area there's GREAT NEWS. This spring on May 22 we will hold our FIRST ever SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop there. Let' hear it for Seattle.
Also, this month's interview is with another amazing woman: Gwen Moon. Recognized internationally as a gifted energy balancer and shamanic practitioner, Gwen truly does travel to the beat of her own drum, and in the process has had tremendous success in healing others. Her interview is both enlightening and eye opening.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
GWEN MOON
I met Gwen Moon in 1996. At the time I was a travel journalist, and my assignment was really tough - I was writing an article on one of the best spas in the country - the Green Valley Spa & Resort in St. George, Utah. Gwen was the Director of the Native American Program at the spa, where she practiced energy balancing work and gem therapy. As part of my story, I had a treatment with her. Simply put, I found her work to be incredible.
As a travel writer, I would not typically get involved with my subject. Not done. But, in that first treatment with Gwen some sort of magic happened. She carefully placed these crystals all over my body, waved a feather to clear the energy, banged a drum softly - and I was off - into the real land of neverland -with a healer that I innately trusted. She opened me up a lot that day, but then discreetly told me that I needed to come back in six weeks, since she thought my energy was still blocked from my neck to my stomach!
“Six weeks!” Well, my assignment would be over in 24-hours not six weeks, but as I said I TRUSTED her, and sure enough, six weeks later I did something I had never done in my career. I got back in my car, drove six hours from LA to St. George for a two-hour session with Gwen and then exploded. As fate would have it (and there are no accidents), my favorite aunt had died unexpectedly in those six weeks and I needed Gwen more than I ever knew.
We've known each other now for almost ten years. For my birthday last year, I drove from Santa Barbara to La Verkin, Utah, where Gwen lives at the base of Mt. Zion for a light treatment. She is now one of a handful of practitioners who works with the powerful Vogel Photonic Triangulation Unit - which uses crystal, color, and light to intensely heal. It was quite a birthday present to myself.
Today, Gwen who is 58, works a few days a week at the spa, but it is her private practice that is thriving. People from around the world come to her for shamanic healing and light work treatments, and her vision. This women of Anishinaabe descent, who has never advertised her services has seen over 12,000 people. I guess you might say she is gifted.
Q. Gwen, what would someone come to you for?
A. I would say people come to me when they are going through a difficult time or when they are ready to enter into a new phase in life. I really see myself as a gatekeeper. I'm right there at the gates of a new experience for a person when they are ready to move into something different or when they are ready to deepen their experience or their perspective on life.
Q. How did you become a healer?
A. At 30 I had a break down. At that time, I went through a divorce, I had four children, and I woke up and found myself living on the desert in tents. I had an automobile and a grub box for food, and a little Colman stove, and no way to provide. I had never really worked. I had never had any interaction with society as a way of taking care of myself. I had never dealt with money before. My husband had taken care of that and I had no education and no way of dealing with anything. I just fell apart after a whole lifetime of trauma and crisis and being a battered wife isolated. That's what happened - I didn't know how to deal with things, so I fell apart. My children knew of some Indian children they were going to school with in the area and they asked about medicine people and that is how I was connected with an old Paiute man and his wife, who accepted me to go into ceremony, and it was in their ceremonies that I was given the crystal as my own personal medicine. It took three years to put myself together and nine years later my guides told me that it was time to become a healer for others. It was then that people just started coming to me.
Q. How does one take a shamanic journey with you?
A. A shamanic journey is through the drum. Shamanic people are multidimensional, they move between the worlds and in the shamanic work that I do with people, it is through the drumming - the beat of the drum actually alters the brain waves - that allows you to get in touch with other dimensions where you encounter helpers, whether they be spirit guides and guardians or animals spirits or elemental spirits or whatever - but they work with you to help you understand what it is that you need in order to heal, answer questions, or to put things back into harmony and right relationship in your life.
Q. You are known for your gem therapy. What is it?
A. Okay. Gem therapy is a process that was given to me by my crystal in meditation. Each of the stones has certain frequencies for particular purposes. When you stop to think about it - the earth is our mother. She is the one that has created our physical bodies, and so the things of the earth are things that strengthen, that bring us into balance and make us stronger. In my gem therapy process what I do first is an energy balancing treatment where I open up the energy centers and allow a person to start to release. I kind of reel them back in and bring them back to their core. Then I do a wrap - which is my compromise between a sweat lodge and a European herbal wrap - it allows you to release emotions and even old psychic residue and afterward I place precious and semi-precious stones on the energy centers of the body. It really is very grounding for the body yet it allows the spirit to soar.
Q. Tell us about your revolutionary light work with the Vogel machine.
A. This unit is like a laser infusion of crystal, color and light into the chakra system. It's used for an amazing clearing and regeneration and it opens the energy centers, flushes them out, and re-charges them. The Vogel work is a quantum leap of amplification over gem therapy because we are working with a quartz unit. There are seven canisters and in each canister there are two sources of full spectrum light - one of them is filtered through a colored gel so it gives you the colors of the chakras, starting with the base chakra of red and working all the way through the rainbow to violet, and then in each canister is inserted a quartz crystal eight to ten inches long. They have been faceted to the sacred geometry of the tree of life from the Kabala and the light is then brought through the crystal at different strobing frequencies. There are frequencies for relaxation, cleansing, opening up energy centers, transpersonal power, spiritual connection, rejuvenation, enhancing the immune system, enhancing creativity and more. It's just amazing work - I love it.
Q. How can we release blocked energy on our own?
A. I would strongly suggest getting out into nature. Mother earth is truly our mother and there is so much comfort there. I can remember when I was going through my most incredible torment - I would just run out into the desert and find some little hollow place and curl up on the ground and let the earth take the pain and let the sun warm my body. There's just something so healing about nature. Getting out into nature and taking time to be kind to yourself, to nurture yourself, to become your own mother.
Q. What can we as women do to feel more powerful within ourselves?
A. That question is interesting to me because my power doesn't come from myself - the power that I work with literally comes from surrender. I know that's not something most women want to hear (she laughs). They think that in order to be powerful you have to be assertive. But that has not been my experience. I get distracted from my divine work and purpose. I've learned that if I surrender, I bring myself into harmony and right relationship.
Q. Why do you feel you are a spirited woman?
A. I believe that it is my deep connection to mother earth and to her elemental spirits. They guide and protect my work and they infuse me with their essence and I think that's where the spirited woman comes in. It is the spirits that feed my spirit, fill it and nourish it. I'm just a child in all of this - even though at this point in my life I am a crone. If I serve them, they take care of me.

Starting in spring of 2005, besides the numerous SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops that will be offered, SPIRITED WOMAN is branching out into new directions. Fantabulous or what? Below are some of the new events & activities that will be offered:
MOTHER & DAUGHTER SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP - Exclusively for mothers and daughters, this workshop will be offered in spring. Talk about a way to bond, share, laugh and be empowered. All ages from 13 and up are welcome to attend. This is a GREAT workshop to do together and an experience to cherish. The first workshop will be offered in LA or Santa Barbara. Plus, there will be a special mother/daughter rate offered.
SPIRITED WOMAN LUNCHEONS - In addition to the workshops and the newsletter, what better way for spirited women to stay connected than at an inspirational lunch. Who-ee! There'll be delicious food, fantastic spirited women speakers, and good vibes for one and all. The goal is to do at least two luncheons in Southern California this spring. I'll keep you posted.
TRAINING SPIRITED WOMAN FACILITATORS - Yes, it had to happen. There have been several women across the United States, who are very interested in being trained to lead SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops. In the summer or fall, if all goes as planned, the training program will be in place.
