Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
We’re on a roll. New subscribers from everywhere (or so it seems), new workshop dates set for all over the place, and our first special event ever (bring out the red carpet!) – the First Mother/Daughter SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop – will be on May 7 in LA. Wow! I’m excited. February must stand for “fruit-full.”
Plus, I owe you a HUGE THANKS. Hundreds of you from London to LA– that’s right, hundreds! - responded to our “logo” poll. Your comments were absolutely golden, and I learned so much about your likes and dislikes. Right now, we’re in the process of incorporating your thoughts into the website plan, and our launch date is still to be announced. Innovative websites take time, and I want this one to really suit your needs. So please know – we’re working on it!
And this month’s interview is a winner, too, or shall I say is about a real inspirational winner – Sylvia Dolena. Sylvia is the creator of the Goddess Week concept, and she is also one of the top minds in the computer industry. You’ve heard about a renaissance man – well move over, Sylvia is a renaissance woman. SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
SYLVIA DOLENA
Sometimes you meet people who change your life – or at the very least expand it. Sylvia Dolena has been one of those people in my life. Last November, I had wanted to go to Hawaii in December to teach my SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop, but didn’t have a clue as to how I was going to accomplish this. Well, in walked kismet – in the form of Sylvia Dolena.
I had called a friend in Maui to ask if she could help me set up a workshop there, and she had just received an e-mail on the First Annual Goddess Week in Maui. She said, “Why don’t you contact the founder of this event? Maybe you can hook up with her.” She forwarded the e-mail, I was impressed by what I saw, called Sylvia, and by the end of that day, we had agreed that I would teach two workshops, Sylvia had created a workshop web site page for me, and we were officially off and running.
Whew! I realized then that I was dealing with a dynamo, who I later found out had homes both in Northern California and Maui, and was not only one of the top business consultants at Hewlett-Packard (the huge company run by a woman - Carly Fiornia), but was also a dynamic entrepreneur, who was a business transformation and leadership consultant, coach, and CEO of her own company, Business Innovation Lab. The woman was inspirational.
Sylvia and I met in Maui in December. I attended her workshops at the Goddess Week, and she attended my SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop. Throughout the week, she seemed like an old cherished friend. Someone whose advice was golden and philosophies on women and life to be treasured. Personally, I think you will find her interview fascinating. At 59, she is a prime example of a successful woman who pulled herself “way up” by the bootstraps and stayed there.
Q. As a young woman, what was your career goal?
A. Wow, let’s see. It wasn’t specifically a job, I loved math and science – and whatever it took to do that was what I was going to do. It was either that or doing hairdressing, because when I was in high school the reason why I escaped from South Texas was because my counselor suggested – I told her math and science was my love – and she said, “oh honey, you better stick to hairdressing or being a secretary.” I was so incensed by this, I thought I’m never going to make it here in Texas, I may as well pack up and leave, and I did. I came to California, met my first husband, got married and then I started college.
Q. What led you into the corporate world?
A. Well, when I first started college in the late 60’s I was looking at job opportunities and the computer industry was just launching, spreading out all over the place, and I thought, hum, math would be a big part of this, so why don’t I get into computers. So I did, I went into computer programming. While I was going to school, I was working for a very small freight line company and I was doing all their computer work. They decided to move from IBM computers to Hewlett-Packard computers and because of this, I was able to interact with all of the Hewlett-Packard people and I fell in love with the people and the company. These people were really happy, motivated people, and I was working for a company that was harassing women and discriminating against them illegally. Seeing the people from Hewlett-Packard and the company that I worked for was like night and day – heaven and hell. The freight line company eventually went out of business and then I got offered two jobs at Hewlett-Packard.
Q. When you worked for the freight line company there was a sexual discrimination lawsuit brought against them. Tell us about it.
A. Women were not being paid time and a half for their overtime. They were more or less coerced to work and some women were sexually harassed. One of my co-workers hired the attorney because she was actually fired and I was her main witness, so I was still working in the company while this was going on and she was outside the company. The lawsuit was eventually won and each woman got lump sum payments out of it. Through this, I experienced a lot of pain and a lot of enlightenment at the same time because it was very enlightening for all of these women to say “yes, let’s go for it,” and I was their spokesperson and then not have anyone of them volunteer to be a witness because they had a lot of fear. It was a huge enlightenment for me to really know who my team is before I put myself out there – because there was no team – they kind of put me out there and hung me out to dry. Sacrificial lamb so to speak. And the people that were running the company were doing everything they could to make me quit. They would yell at me, say I was doing things wrong, try to get evidence, tape phone conversations, all that. What got me through it was what my sister always said, “If you see something that needs to be done and no one is doing it, guess what? It’s you.” So, I just remembered that always. It was basically the principle of what’s right and what’s wrong. There was lots of discrimination back then in the mid to late 80’s – someone just needed to do something.
Q. Sylvia, you are the creator of the relatively new “Goddess Week” concept, what is that and what are your future plans for it?
A. The Goddess Week is really a celebration of women and all of their capacities – not just the capacities they are in touch with right now, but their capacities of intuition, of healing, of manifestation, of feminine energy, of dance, of music. So it’s really a celebration of women and all their talents and how to bring that out into the world. My long-term vision for this is to continue doing this on an annual basis in Maui, and to really merge the business leadership aspect and the metaphysical aspect together – the two different ways women express themselves right now in the world. I also plan to do a Goddess Week this fall in Los Angeles and I’ll be doing weekend workshops in a few months in Northern California for women primarily around leadership development, communications and business, negotiating skills, and different types of competencies that will help women progress themselves in their careers.
Q. Do you have a personal philosophy that you adhere to?
A. I believe we’re all here to do something in this life – we have a life purpose and we’re here to overcome any obstacles, any lessons that we have to learn in order to fulfill that life purpose. So, I strongly believe that I agreed to come into this life in this particular body to do something and I am here to discover what that is and to start doing it. I feel that in my case it is to empower women in a way that they have not been empowered before, it is more an integration of all of the skills and talents that they have naturally along with the ones that they have been conditioned to have. And really have that integrated total woman -that unbeatable, unstoppable woman, all of the words that you use in the SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop – all of those together. Also, I want to say, that even though I know what my life’s purpose is of empowering and encouraging others, I can also choose how I experience that. I choose to live on Maui, create a leadership development center for women there, and just really enjoy the type of life that I want. So they are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes we believe that living our life purpose is about sacrifice and total giving – it’s about receiving also and living your life the way you choose to experience it.
Q. Can you share with us any tools to create our visions?
A. Well, the tools that I use personally are meditation and it is mediation with an intention. Many times we go into meditation to see what shows up. Well, I do meditation with an intention of asking a question and receiving an answer. So my first question is, “What am I here to do?” My first response was, “you are here to give back” so that started the path of discovering what I was here to do by being in a meditative state and by asking questions and being open to hearing the answer.
Q. Why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. I am a spirited woman because I absolutely had to be in order to survive. Growing up in Texas there was so much discrimination that I needed to maintain that spirited side of me and protect it so that I could not only survive but I could thrive. What kept me holding onto that spirited woman inside of this little girl was the fact that I knew at a very young age that there was so much more for me than I was seeing in the moment and I’m going to find it. My spirit is the thing that propels me forward, gets me up in the morning, it allows me to do a lot of things that I never thought I would be able to do. It’s an absolute force that lives within me. I would call it desire. I would call it motivation. I would call it energy. And all that rolled up into one is spirit.

Starting in spring of 2005, besides the numerous SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops that will be offered, SPIRITED WOMAN is branching out into new directions. Fantabulous or what? Below are some of the new events & activities that we’ve got planned:
MOTHER & DAUGHTER SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP – MAY 7, Sat. from 1-4pm. We’re honoring Mother’s Day – the day before! This special event workshop, exclusively for mothers and daughters will be held at the fantastic-ly fun Black Box Theater in West LA. Talk about a GREAT way to bond, share, laugh and be empowered TOGETHER. Wow. What an experience to cherish! All ages from 13 and up are welcome. Plus, there’s a special mother/daughter rate of $150.
SPIRITED WOMAN LUNCHEONS - In addition to the workshops, the newsletter, and the upcoming website, what better way for spirited women to stay connected than at an inspirational lunch. Who-ee! There'll be delicious food, fantastic spirited women speakers, and good vibes for one and all. The goal is to do two luncheons in Southern California this summer or fall. I'll keep you posted.
TRAINING SPIRITED WOMAN FACILITATORS - Yes, it had to happen. There have been several women across the United States, who are very interested in being trained to lead SPIRITED WOMAN Workshops. In the summer or fall, if all goes as planned, the training program will be in place.
