SPIRITED WOMAN QUOTE
"One can have zillions of responsibilities yet have zillions of laughs. One has nothing to do with the other. They are separate parts of our internal universe." - Nancy Mills

EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
Rah! Rah! She-bang. Last month, I raved about the upcoming workshops in LA, presented at The Black Box Theater. Well, others are talking it up too. The workshop received a mention this morning on "The Hollywood Reporter" website and would you believe it's made the popular "7 Days in LA" section of "Los Angeles City Beat." Picture and all! It's happening in LA. And for those of you who want to attend, there are still a few spaces available, so check out the workshop section below.
Also, I'm thrilled this month to have a Q&A with Lynn Garlock-Wright, the phenomenal powerhouse dynamo (Is there such a woman? Yes, there is), who is the Prez/ CEO of the legendary Catch A Rising Star chain of comedy clubs. How she got to where she is, is truly inspirational. Read on to find out more. I really like her spunky spirit.
And lastly, a big round of applause goes to Trish Williamson-Bastion and her husband Jon. Tremendous supporters and believers in the Spirited Woman concept, they are hosting my upcoming Las Vegas workshops (Feb. 19, 21, 22). Talk about catching... their enthusiasm is catching, and I'm truly excited to be working with them and to be meeting so many new spirited friends in Las Vegas.
The SPIRITED WOMAN newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women nationwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments enthusiasm, and friendship. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop in your city

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
Lynn Garlock-Wright
Lynn Garlock-Wright is filled with laughter, drive, and enthusiasm. She bubbles up and the world catches her energy. I was introduced to Lynn through her close friend, Trish Williamson-Bastian, who is hosting my Las Vegas workshops. "Talk about a spirited woman! Lynn would be a great interview for your newsletter." So, Trish called her on my behalf, Lynn, very graciously said yes to a phone interview (she lives in Las Vegas, too) and the rest as they say is "showtime." She bowled me over.
Lynn, age 45, is the President/CEO of Catch a Rising Star, a national comedy club and entertainment company headquartered in Las Vegas, that was originally founded in New York City in 1972. From its inception, the legendary Manhattan club was home to such comedians as Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, the original cast of Saturday Night Live, Richard Belzer, and on and on.
Since joining the comedy chain in 1997, Lynn is credited with increasing revenues, expanding the chain to new locales (such as Albuquerque, N.M., Pala, CA.) and turning it into a major entertainment player. A few years ago, she even closed the famed New York club, but - get out your horns - Catch A Rising Star is reopening this March in Times Square, New York City to a ton of fanfare and hoopla.
Lynn took the time out of her frenetic schedule (I mean the woman is on the road almost half the month) to do this interview. I found her to be direct, and very refreshing in her candor. And I saw a wonderful glimpse of what it has taken her to get to where she is today in the entertainment biz - a one-of-a-kind boot camp. I think you will find her story to be an eye-opener.
For those of you, who want to meet Lynn, she is planning to come to the Las Vegas
SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop on Sat. Feb. 21 - that is - if she doesn't have to be in NYC. As she said, "I'm going to try my darndest." I know she will. Now, here's Lynn.
Q: How did you go from being a surgical nurse to the President of a comedy club?
A. I was fortunate to train for open-heart surgery. But, once I got on the open-heart team, I felt like I was in Detroit working on cars. It was one heart after the other - I hate to say this but it almost came to the point where you looked forward to an emergency situation just to break it up. I realized it wasn't for me – I was bored out of my mind and I thought (I was 20) maybe I’ll go back to school. I was living in Southwest Florida and I was struggling with what to do and a very close girlfriend had moved to Reno, and kept telling me to come. So I packed up my bags and off I went. I asked everyone in Reno, "Where should I get a job?" and they said, "Oh, if you want to work in the casino industry go to Harrah’s." So I went to Harrah’s, walked into human resources and I said, "I want to be a dealer." And they said, "No, we think you should become a cocktail waitress." And I said, "No, I swear, I can count." I got the cocktail job and said, "All right, what the hell." Like I say, I was kind of feeling things out. I started taking classes at the university and I got to tell you, at Harrah’s, I went to a Tony Bennett show and I said to myself, "I want to become a producer." I knew I didn't have the talent to get on stage, but to be a behind the scenes person. Well, it's not like you go to the university and their curriculum says – get a bachelors in becoming a producer. So I decided, Harrah's had showrooms, and if I could just get my foot in the door, I’ll learn this and figure it out.
Q. What happened next?
A. At the time, it tended to be a male-oriented situation as far as getting into the showroom even as a host. They expected anyone to get into that position to become a bartender – so, I said, "Okay fine." I became a bartender and then the host position opened at the cabaret, and I got it. I told the manager of the cabaret, "I don't mean to be mean, but I will have your job in two months. I'm very ambitious about this." And he looked at me like "Yeah." What I did was, I started producing reports for the property about the profit and loss activity of the showroom, and sure as hell they gave me the manager's position. I took off from there. Harrah’s had a program where they groomed someone from each property for upper management and they chose me for an eventual entertainment director's position. In that time, I took over the other showroom. So now I was going through a whole training class thanks to them – learning sound and lights, publicity, marketing, booking – and just all the basics that were needed. After twelve years at Harrah’s, I went to work for a concert producer. That's how I got to Las Vegas. And it kind of just went from there.
Q. Did you have any mentors along the way and how did they help you?
A. Someone that was very helpful to me was Butch Austin. He believed in me. And a gentleman by the name of David Brody. They were in management at Harrah’s. Everyone else looked at me and said, "You're nuts." But I have to say, they gave me the chance and encouraged me to go on. They were both very supportive as far as the training I got for upper level management. Remember this was like the 80’s and 90’s in entertainment, and all of the women whose paths that I crossed were very aggressive and very hard, I would almost have to say mean-spirited. I made a decision early on to really take advantage of my femininity rather than try to disburse it and not make it part of me. Butch and David gave me the support I needed to open up my own doors. At times it was almost a cruel awakening to see other women that had made it high in the field – I almost felt they had lost their femininity in getting to where they needed to be. To be competitive with men they tried to become like men, rather than utilizing the great gift of being a woman.
Q. Who is the person who has influenced you the most in your life?
A. Probably my friend Holly Riley. She has always been a great inspiration to me in that she truly believes in celebrating oneself, and that the only way that you can celebrate anyone else is to celebrate yourself. She's truly someone that exercises that belief everyday. She was the gal that asked me to move to Reno. I'm her kid's godmother and the whole thing. Pretty much what she believes is that the way someone treats themselves carves out the path of how others will treat them, so it comes back to you as well.
Q. What personality traits do you have that you feel are the keys to your success?
A. I would say, "Walk softly but carry a big stick." The idea of being a woman in what I do, but what I say goes. I'm straightforward. I don't think there are any closed doors. I take chances in life. I have the tenacity to push forward.
Q. Is there any advice you would like to give women on succeeding in their careers?
A. I think it is paying attention to…if you are not really grounded in your own confidence, your chances are unlikely to succeed to begin with, but also you've got to maintain a sense of humor through it all. At the end of my day, I go through all the hard work, put in ten hours, and for me the greatest joy is being able to step back and see the results of that work…just sitting back and listening to an audience laugh. If there's anything I've been able to do is give them that gift today. You've got to be able to step back and it's got to be something more than financial. You've got to have the passion otherwise it's just a job. And anytime that you feel like you're going to work, then you need to think about what you are doing. Consider maybe another field.
Q. How has your personal life been affected by your career success?
A. Well, I'm happily married – we got married last year -- and my husband is absolutely supportive and wonderful especially with all the travel that I have to do. But probably because of this particular industry, I never did have children. It just really wasn't conducive to the lifestyle. I would have done that differently, but now I'm in my mid-40’s. All throughout my 30’s I was so career driven (I was also single, too), if I had been married instead of divorced, maybe then, because you have the influence of the other person saying I'm ready to have a family, but, I was kind of freewheeling and I just didn't have kids. Yes..it was a missed opportunity.
Q. Lynn, why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. Every action creates a reaction – so if I can carry myself in the world in a spirited manor, I think it just affects other people. I just think people affect other people – we do it everyday, even to people that aren't even part of our lives. I try to be sensitive and caring toward others and aware of how much affect I do have on them. It's maintaining a consciousness about it, and paying attention to the flow of where your attention is everyday.
THANK YOU LYNN. MAY YOU ALWAYS HEAR THE LAUGHTER.

AND NOW FOR THE THANKS!!!!!!!
Okay, I'm going to gush again about Trish Williamson-Bastian and Jon Bastian. They've made up fliers, called the press, and marched through the streets (well, the desert) to tell people about the workshops. Seems as though we're going to have great attendance. In fact, a fourth workshop might be added.
Thanks again to Michaele Harrington, manager of Curves Ft. Mojave. Her enthusiasm is boundless, and so is her energy. This is the first Curves in the large national Curves chain to present the workshop, and they are going all out. I can't wait to give the workshops, Michaele, and to see you, again. Thank you. Thank you.
MORE THANKS - To the many wonderful spirited women who have attended the workshops. You are ALL fantabulous and fun.
