Many of you are new subscribers to the SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter this month and many of you are being forwarded the newsletter for the first time. I’d like to personally welcome you into our growing world of workshops, inspiration, support, and the whole she-bang! Enjoy.

T.S. WILEY
A month or so ago, my good friend Nila invited me to attend a lecture where Sex, Lies, and Menopause author T.S. “Susie” Wiley was speaking about the “Shocking Truths of Hormone Replacement Therapy.” Nila had just finished reading her book, and was very excited about it, and she felt listening to Susie’s viewpoints would be a real eye-opener for both of us.
Eye-opener? Let’s just say I was transfixed. I literally sat there with my mouth open as this dynamic, compelling, and convincing woman talked about her hormonal theories for women and their bodies. Actually I felt I had been transported into a new land of wisdom.
Susie, 51, who is Santa Barbara-based, a mother of five, an anthropologist, a medical theorist with a background in investigative journalism, a research scientist, an entrepreneur, and a member of the New York Academy of Science clearly is a woman on a mission. She is also controversial and bucking the medical establishment in a BIG WAY.
Fascinated by both Susie and her approach, I asked her if I could interview her for my August newsletter. She gladly agreed, in fact she was honored. Presently there are about 2,000 women nationwide who are on her “Wiley Protocol,” which you will read about below, and she is eager to “spread the word” to as many women as possible. And I concur – her work could change your life.
In September, the paperback edition of Sex, Lies, and Menopause (which she originally co-authored in 2003 with oncologist Julie Taguchi and Brent Formby, a molecular biologist) will be coming out and for those of you who would like to meet Susie in the flesh, she will be attending the August 14 Santa Barbara SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop. Now, shake your booties and read….
Q. Why did you write Sex, Lies, and Menopause? What in your personal history led up to it?
A. Personally, I had five children and I nursed them all until they said, “Mom, we’d rather have pizza.” I was the poster girl for what I perceived to be living the life of a woman biologically and yet I had an ovarian cyst and I had a breast lump stuck to my chest. I think I had three or four mammograms before I said, “Oh my god, no more.” I wanted to wake up not afraid anymore in the morning, so I started to ask questions that I eventually realized all women must want the answer to and that led to the book.
Q. What are some myths about menopause?
A. I think that it’s “no problem.” That some women just sail through it so the ones who don’t are “whiners.” I think the biggest myth about menopause is that it’s “healthy.” That it’s a natural thing and therefore you’ll be fine. It’s really the beginning of the end.
Q. What is the basic message of your book?
A. The basic message is that when it all comes down in the end nobody, no one will take care of you but you. You must do your own research. You must be responsible for your own health as a woman in this country.
Q. Susie, what is the shocking truth about hormone replacement therapy?
A. Well, there are three or four of them. The first one is that women in this country were never offered hormone replacement therapy – what they were offered was neither hormones – they were drugs with hormone-like effects – nor replacement. The way that you were offered a dosing schedule of a chronic static dose could never re-create how hormones existed in your body, so it’s not replacement. And of course, if you can get your hands on real hormones and real replacement the shocking truth is “it doesn’t cause cancer it cures it.” And I rarely use the word cure. Another shocking truth – I think that women were sold a bill of goods in the 60’s. Contraceptives were handed out like Pez and we all put our little hands out and said, “I’ll take it.” Nobody ever looked at it – no doctor ever said this could impact your life, your fertility, your health. We were handed baby formula those of us who had babies and nobody said, “This can cause breast cancer in the mother.” I think the shocking truth is women have been misled and lied to repeatedly over the last century and if you want that to stop you have to do your own homework.
Q. What kind of hormone replacement therapy do you advocate and why?
A. From eight years worth of research my conclusion, and I could come to no other, is that women must have hormone replacement and the only kind that is safe turns out to be the most effective – which is plant derived estrogen and progesterone in cream in a dosing schedule that will mimic normal levels in a twenty-year-old in blood work.
Q. What is the Wiley Protocol?
A. It turns out to be what we describe in Chapter 10 as a dosing schedule that escalates and descends both estrogen and progesterone. The dosing schedule is called the Wiley Protocol and it is best done, I would like to say, only done, with those plant derived hormones and creams, because you have control over increasing amounts that you can apply day by day. You must go to a doctor - it is a prescription item. Quite literally any compounding pharmacy could fill this prescription. I work here in Santa Barbara with the San Ysidro Pharmacy (it costs $110/mo). It can be called in and it can be mailed to you month by month. Quite a few insurance companies cover it.
Q. Why have we as women been given drugs instead of natural hormones?
A. We’ve been given drugs because they make money. Natural hormones cannot be patented, so when drug companies run all of their studies on what hormone replacement should do they use natural hormones and when they market them they become synthetic so that they can patent them and they do not have the same effect that the natural hormones did in the studies. But, they don’t care – because if the product makes you sick then they can invent another drug. So, it’s a win, win situation for them.
Q. What about all the stuff that is marketed as natural, like the patches? Why do you feel those don’t work?
A. They’re nothing. They’re doses that are almost non-existent. Those patches might give you some relief from a hot flash or vaginal dryness but the efficacy of hormone replacement is dose dependent. It is the rhythm of the dose and the amount of the dose. And those patches are almost placebo they’re so weak. I mean you’re getting more fumes through the phone from me with what I take than you’d get from a patch.
Q. What is crucial for menopausal women to be aware of?
A. That the decay, the aging is incremental and pretty soon you don’t remember what it felt like to feel good. You get very used to the aches and pains and the dim vision even if you’re not melting down from hot flashes every 10 minutes like some women are, even if you don’t have breast cancer, even if the women in your family didn’t die of a heart attack. You get use to the arthritis, you get use to depression, the headaches, and those symptoms are not minor. Just because you can take Advil other processes are happening inside of you that you don’t see – whether it’s Alzheimer’s, whether it’s a cancer that will show up later, whether it’s a stroke coming – you may not be aware that all of those things don’t have to happen. Putting the hormones back seems to in every case that I’ve ever investigated halt the process.
Q. If I was on the other side of the table from you - what would be the kind of things I would be saying to you as to why I felt what you were advocating was out in left field?
A. There are no clinical trials. That’s what you would say to me. That’s the only objection. If you look at the science all of this is very plausible but it has not been proven in something like the Women’s Health Initiative, so why would women take the risk. And my response is “the Women’s Health Initiative took 17 years and I am 51-years-old in 17 years I won’t care. No guts, no glory.” That’s my response and when it comes to cancer whether or not hormones cure it or not, I usually look an oncologist right in the eye and say, “What are you going to do if I’m right? Then what?”
Q. You are obviously a woman on a mission. What propels you to keep going?
A. Every life matters and these are the lives of women. These women are mothers and sisters and daughters and they’re the fabric of humanity. Everything begins and ends with us. We have to survive and we have to be healthy or everything else falls apart.
Q. Why do you feel you are a spirited woman?
A. I have daughters. I had a great-grandmother who was captured by Indians and there are parks named after her. I come from a long line of women and have in fact made women who will go forward with the notion that the responsibility is ours to take care of each other and the men. That’s just kinda it. It comes down to it’s a dirty little job but somebody’s got to do it.
