SPIRITED WOMAN QUOTE
"There is a song within every woman - bursting to be sung to the world." - Nancy Mills
----------------
EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
One of the greatest things about establishing a woman's inspiration community is that you get to do really inspirational things! And meet women who continually fill your soul and inspire you deeply. That's how I felt about all the women who entered the Spirited Woman Singing Contest, and to those of you who voted, and made the most wonderful comments, I thank you all.
In honor of the contest, this month's Q&A is with the singers who won the contest. They are fantastic women, ranging in age from 13 to their early 40's. One is called a "fairy stepmother" by her stepdaughter. The other is a mother to a three-year-old with "10 personalities." The other dreams of a career in sales - when she grows up. They all have one thing in common - besides talent - the ability to swallow their fears, try new things, and just go for it!
Once again, I urge you to SIGN-UP for our 2007 SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE,
which launches Tuesday, March 6th with acclaimed author Aimee Liu. The eight conversation guests range from mega-selling authors to a top New York book agent to TV producers. These women rarely do "telechats" and they're doing it because they believe in the concept of Spirited Woman - of "women inspiring women." You'll get to ask questions and really learn insider info. Plus, we're running a series special. You're also welcome to sign up for conversations individually, too. Come, join us!
Now (drum roll please), I'm so excited about one more thing. We've introduced a new product this month and its a bonafide winner - SPIRITED WOMAN "plantable stationary." That's right - the stationary is embedded with wildflower seeds and it grows when you plant it. The colors are gorgeous, the texture sensational - and I can honestly tell you, you won't find a more unusual, one-of-a-kind cherished gift. BE SURE to scroll down to our store section.
As always, I would like to thank you for your support, comments, enthusiasm, and friendship. And for those of you new to the newsletter, I'd like to welcome you to our growing numbers. YOU inspire me, always. And I genuinely look forward to meeting you (again or for the first time) in person at a SPIRITED WOMAN Workshop or within our SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE.
The SPIRITED WOMAN Newsletter is meant to be fun, informative, and inspirational. Your free monthly tool to stay connected with other spirited women nationwide. I welcome you forwarding this newsletter to ALL your spirited friends.

SPIRITED WOMAN Q & A
KAY PERE, ALICE MARIE, EMILY HENRY
As I am sure all of you know by now, I simply love the process of creativity. And when I got a chance to announce the winners of the first Spirited Woman Singing Contest it was an absolute thrill. As the entries came in, I listened to them one by one, and very often, tears of joy were streaming down my cheeks. I was so curious to find out who these women were, why they entered the contest, how the lyrics of the Spirited Woman Song motivated them, what their backgrounds were, and of course, what they were going to do with the prize money.
So, below, I've given you a glimpse into the lives of Kay Pere and Alice Marie - our two first place winners - and Emily Henry, the 13-year-old, who won second place. JeLaina Schmidt, our 17-year-old third place winner from Portland, OR was sick with a cold and couldn't be interviewed. All of their fantastic versions of the Spirited Woman Song can be listened to at: http://www.thespiritedwoman.com/singingcontest/.
KAY PERE is a singer/songwriter, a visual artist, educator, writer, and all around creative soul. Married to Bill Pere, a Connecticut State Troubadour Emeritus, they reside in Mystic, Connecticut. She is the "fairy stepmother" to two kids, an active member of the Connecticut Songwriters Association, and the Associate Director of Local United Network to Combat Hunger (LUNCH), producing and performing in hundreds of benefit events, raising more than $500,000 to help people in need. She's produced her own CD, "Even Better Than Chocolate," and she's currently working on a second CD "The Dolphins Daughters." In fact, she's using her $100 first prize money toward completing the project.
When I talked to Kay, she sounded like an angel. Her voice is sweet, gentle, and even though she is in her early 40's - she sounds girlish. She's delightful. I found out that this is the first singing contest that she has entered. She said, "I'm not a big contest entering kind of person - I basically do what I do and I don't really set out to compete - this is something that looked like a lot of fun." It took her eight hours to record the song.
Q. What inspired you to enter?
A. The words that you wrote - I found them motivational. And I thought I could do a good job setting them to music in a way that would communicate the spirit behind them musically so that other people could sing along. Actually one of my friends went to the page once the song was up there to check it out and she lives in London and she said she listened to it and about half an hour later when she was out walking her dog, she found herself singing it. So your words and my tune. It's a powerful thing.
Q. One of the things that you write on your website - is that the art of the journey is through song. What do you mean by that?
A.
I see life as a journey. I think it is so easy when we go through difficult times to only see those. Sometimes we can become rather myopic. I find inspiration as looking at life as a process, as a journey. Say, "Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Potter" - these are various adventures that we go through, but we learn things from them. So for me I express the things that I experience the things that I learn through song and through my visual art - and really each one of those things influences the other. I find that once I've created something it changes me. I think the things we create - create us just as much.
Q. When people listen to your music what do you hope they get out of it?
A. For The Spirited Woman Song, I'd like people to have a sense of "yes, I can." That they have a power and energy inside of themselves to accomplish what they dream. And setting out in the directions of their dreams they may not end up quite where they thought they'd be but maybe someplace even better and learn along the way. As far as the body of my work I want people to feel a sense of connection to each other, a sense of hope, and just basically the beauty of humanity.
Q. Kay, why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. I think it means being true to yourself and being unafraid to express that in the world and to use that to make a difference. That's what I'm doing - so I guess I am.
ALICE MARIE, the second first place winner is funny, charming, married, living in Manhattan with her husband and three-year-old daughter Amanda (the one with 10 personalities), and is a singer, former high school teacher, writer, editor, and presently a state-of-the-heart coach. Age 36, she's recorded two CD's, "Equilibrium" and "Angels Near," and she produces "Tea With Alice Marie" musical affirmations. Alice recently appeared on Candace Bushnell's radio show on Sirius called "Sex, Success, and Sensibility." Currently, she's working on another CD.
This was the first music contest she's entered in a long time. "I've been picked for showcases," she says, "but they're not quite contests, they have a different feel." She heard about the contest, through the newsletter, which she signed up for, after she and I became MySpace friends.
Q. Alice, when did you start singing?
A.
The womb. My memory of falling in love with the idea of singing and
starting to do it was when "Grease" came out in 1978. I was about seven
and my mom helped me buy all the albums and I just studied them. I
transcribed the lyrics when they weren't available in the sleeves. I
had been performing already in school - in plays, in chorus things, and
did that throughout school.
Q. Why did you decide to enter the contest?
A. Spirited Woman spoke to me - that phrase - and you also have sort of a Sark vibe - the colors and the vibrancy. Also, recently I enjoy taking other people's words and putting music to it. That's what really compelled me to do it - I've done it for a friend's wedding. I'm not as invested in the lyrics the same way I might be with my own. You've given me a frame to work with. And the essence of your site is of interest to me and hey, a cash prize is cool too! The check is going into the "Tea With Alice Marie Fund" - I plan to record another CD this year.
Q. How long did it take you to record the song?
A. I mulled the lyrics a little bit, played with them, and then I remember recording a melody idea on my cell phone - when I can't get to my recording equipment that's what I do. Then I put it on my calendar to work on this when I had some quiet time at home. So I had made that appointment with myself and basically had a window of three hours when hubby took my daughter out. It came quickly when I finally sat at the piano, maybe a half-hour, but then over the next few days, I listened to it and changed a couple of things.
Q. What did the process of singing the Spirited Woman Song stimulate within you - since you are so much about the relationship of creativity through self-care?
A. Because my daughter is not in school right now my time for music has been very limited. So to be able to sit down with that and just be my singing spirited woman self was a gift. So when I hear that song - I listen to it now along with my affirmations - and it's just, "yes, I am this!" and even when I seem really far away from music it is still there. So that is what it felt like for me - I am a mother, but I am also an artist.
Q. Alice, why do you feel that you are a Spirited Woman?
A. The first thing that comes to mind is because I try. I'm able to put perfection aside and just go for it. I think sometimes that's what keeps us from being spirited - that fear of "is it going to look bad, am I going to sound bad."
EMILY HENRY , age 13, the second place winner is a unique mixture of bubbly enthusiasm and maturity. She lives in Westminster, Colorado with her mom, dad, three brothers and two sisters, is in the 7th grade, and has been home-schooled her whole life. She plays the cello (she use to play the piano), and she loves to sing in the kitchen with her mom and sister. When she grows up she wants to be in sales.
She entered the contest she says because "I had wanted a puppy for a long time and I was on Craigslist looking for one and I had seen your Spirited Woman thing and I kind of just looked at it and thought I was going to do it - then kind of forgot about it. It was Wednesday night and I found it, and I go, 'oh, that's cool, it's ending tonight.' I realized all I had to do was to just sing into the phone, so I called the number and I just did it."
Yeap, she's a natural for sales. She did get her puppy, named him Kodiac, and is now using her $50 prize money for a crate for him. This is the first singing contest she's ever entered but she won a poetry contest once. She says, "oh yes, my writing is very spirited, too. I like to write poems and short stories."
Q. Emily, how old were you when you started singing?
A. I think when I was about eight. You know when you're eight your voice isn't developed or anything. I tried out for "Annie" and that's how I actually got started. I didn't get it, but it was a start. Then we went to Maine, and that was when I first realized I like to sing - we were singing in an RV on the way to get ice cream - it was just me and my uncle and a bunch of my cousins - they, were like "oh, you've got a good voice." That's when it really started. Now I sing at miscellaneous things - I'm singing at a talent show. I sing in my uncle's wedding. I don't know if you've heard of "The Prayer" by Josh Grobin and Charlotte Church, but my dad and my sister, and I sing that. It's just kind of here and there.
Q. What do you want to do when you grow up?
A. I have several different things because you can't really base your thoughts on being a singer - because it is a hard industry to get into - because there is so much competition. I thought about that for sure, but I want to be like a sales woman too. I'd like to sell medical equipment or something like that. My dad's in sales, and I've done a lot with him - he sells caskets - and he really loves it - it's an up and down type of thing - but I'm pretty good at doing that. Since we're home-schooled, I go with him on his rounds around the state.
Q. How did you feel when you sang the Spirited Woman Song?
A. I got off the phone and I felt kind of like I hadn't done the best I could have done. I was like "ohhhh, I probably could have done better." I probably should have practiced it a few times. I didn't even practice it - I just got on there and did it. Even when I listen to it now - there are a few parts when I am out of tune. It was really just kind of on a whim.
Q. Emily, why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. I just feel that I am different from a lot of people. I'm not your average person. I do a lot of things that people don't do. For instance, home schooling or playing cello. I'm a bubbly person, and so when I saw the Spirited Woman I was like "oh that totally explains me." Really, because I can just get out there and do it. I'm not really afraid to talk about my feelings, I'm not very embarrassed about things, I'm very wild - to me it means I have my own personality. I don't have a role model, I am just unique. I'm different from everybody else. And I have my own personality instead of copying off of someone else's.
