Welcome to the world of SPIRITED WOMANHOOD.
July is a very symbolic month. It's all about independence and growth. And I'd like every spirited woman reading this newsletter - that means YOU - to stand up and shout, "I am an independent wonder." Yes, you are. Brave. Strong. And beautiful. That's you.
Now, on that note, blow your triumphant trumpet!
We had a blast last month at the "Downtown Women Artist" Event at the Hive Gallery. It was awesome. Many spirited women and men attended. This month, on July 29, we've got another great event, "Summer Dessert Soiree with Adventurer Rhoda Lurie." An ethno-art historian, Rhoda's been to over 60 countries, has this huge goddess art collection, and great ethnic store with really unusual collectibles. Please join us for this one-of-a-kind event and tell your friends! Also, our July 14 SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP in glorious Santa Barbara is coming up, and how about joining us on our July 10 SPIRITED WOMAN CIRCLE telechat with author Rita Williams? Our July Q&A is with mega-popular romance novelist Carly Phillips. She's written over 25 books, two of her books "Summer Lovin'" and "Hot Item" have made the New York Times bestseller list, she's just released a new book "Cross My Heart," and her next book "Sealed With A Kiss" will debut early fall. Carly is a Harlequin queen - a woman whose love for passion - in all things - has taken her the distance and created a dream life. She's fantastically successful.

CARLY PHILLIPS
Carly Phillips is a sex magnet. Let me explain. She writes about hot steamy sex in her bestselling romance novels. And her ever-growing coterie of mainly women fans, flock to her as if she were, well, a magnet!
How did I meet Carly? Through a twist of internet fate. As it turns out we are My Space friends. Yes, she's got a page, I've got a page, and through a series of messages we met. Now, here's a woman with a publicist, publisher, and tons of advisors - and through a simple message - we connected! Ah - the power of the internet!
Carly, fortysomething, is a dynamo. Married for 17 years to her college sweetheart, a former lawyer who quit law to raise her two daughters, she lives in Purchase, New York, where in her home office (which is primarily pink) she churns out one mega-bestseller after the other. Carly started her writing career with Harlequin Temptation in 1999 with "Brazen," and has since published twenty-five books featuring spirited women heroines, including the New York Times bestsellers "Summer Lovin'" and "Hot Item." She has millions of devoted fans and her new book, "Cross My Heart" just debuted, and its sequel "Sealed With A Kiss" will launch early fall.
What I like about Carly (and there are many things!) is the fact that she is a talented, empowered woman who follows her heart. Her road from lawyer to romance novelist was not easy - she faced years of rejections, yet she never quit. She persisted and followed her dreams. She is a spirited woman willing to take a chance (how about leap?) and I admire that greatly.
Carly is an inspiration for the "I can do it," club. And I am so proud to say - for those of you who would like to speak with Carly personally - she will be a guest on our Spirited Woman Circle conversation series on August 7th. This is her first "telechat," ever and we're both excited.
Now, here's a taste of Carly. I guarantee you, both her interview (and talking with her personally) will put a smile on your face.
Q. You were a lawyer, once upon a time, who didn't enjoy law - what lead you to change careers totally and become a romance novelist? Did it take you a long time to get your first book published?
A. I left law totally before I ever decided to write romance. I left knowing I'd be a stay at home mom. Reading always was my first love and soon it seemed natural to want to try and write. It took me 7 years and 10 completed manuscripts submitted over and over again before I sold. Yes, it took a long time. Persistence really is the key. Writing new books, believing in yourself when it seems impossible.
Q. Carly, you've written 25 books! That's amazing. How long does it take you to write a book? And do you have any rituals to get you in the mood to write?
A. Well I wish you'd asked me this last year. This past book I am writing is taking much longer because real life keeps intruding but in reality I have 6 months to write each book. That's two new books a year. How I break down the pages, the words, that's up to me. I wish I had rituals. Maybe then the process would seem easier each time. I always start a book feeling excited to get started and telling myself I'll do minimum of five pages a day each day. I never quite hold to that, however. I do more and I do less. As long as I "do", it works for me.
Q. Okay, you're the first author that I've interviewed that changed her
name. Your real name is Karen Drogin - how and why did you become Carly
Phillips?
A.
I sold in 1998 to Harlequin Temptation at a time when publishers owned
an author's name if they took a pseudonym. In translation, this means
if a writer agreed to change her real name to a pseudonym and then the
author sold to another publishing house, she needed Harlequin's
permission to write under the pen name. Which leads to the question -
why did I agree to take a pseudonym when they offered me a contract? I
wish I could say I knew what I was doing and had good reason - but the
truth is I did what I always do - I went with my gut instinct. I knew I
should have said, "let me think about it." But as someone dying to sell
a book, I knew there were so many authors out there who'd agree in a
heartbeat. But that wasn't why I said yes. I'd been dealing with this
particular editor for a few years and I trusted her judgment. I asked
her reasons for asking me to take a pseudonym and she explained: Karen
Drogin, my real name, had issues for the publisher: Karen was too
traditional for the kind of books I was going to write, hot sexy
contemporaries, and Drogin wasn't easy to remember or pronounce. They
wanted sassy and contemporary. I wanted a tie to my real life. My
husband's name is Phillip and a friend suggested "Phillips" as a last
name; and I gave Harlequin a list of first names that started with "C"
or "K" like Karen. Carly Phillips seemed to fit. The ownership didn't
turn out to be a problem as Harlequin gave me permission each time I
asked to use the name; and eventually Donna Hayes became CEO of
Harlequin and she gave authors back the rights to their pseudonyms - so
all's well that ends well!.
Q. You write about all these sexy characters with passionate sex lives - yet you've been married to the same husband for 18 years, and are a mom to two daughters and two dogs - where do you get your material might I ask, or do you just have a really fertile imagination?
A. People love to ask this question. It's probably my most asked question. It's also probably the hardest to answer because there is no "one place" where I get my information. It seems completely natural to me that I've been married 18 years and write about sexy characters with passionate sex lives - who will end the book with the one person they are destined to spend the rest of their lives with. But the ideas? Everywhere. A spark can come from the smallest thing like a story about an actor with dyslexia (led me to write HOT NUMBER) or my love of soap operas which leads to character names. Have you ever heard of people with better real and character names you can pick and choose from than soap actors and actresses? My neighbors used to joke I probably look into their house with a telescope. Nope. The truth isn't quite as exciting although I hope the books are!
Q. Did you ever think your books would become so popular? And that you would have fans all over the world? Do you have any fun fan stories to share with us?
A.
I dreamed that my books would become so popular but I never thought about how it would happen. I just had a feeling in my heart that I needed to keep at it, that there was more out there for me. I still have that feeling although it's harder to sustain these days. When you're younger and unpublished and hungry for a taste of being published, you write like a demon. As you get older and your family gets older, real life intrudes - which is okay because I have an amazing life - and great kids who will be old enough to be on their own soon enough. Right now I want to enjoy them AND the writing! It's amazing to me to realize people all over the world read me. There is one woman who lives in Ohio and when I was going to be touring there in 2003, someone in her family wrote me that she loves my books but is housebound and has a hard time getting out. I visited her and brought books, and we correspond ever since. She's amazing. She loves "24" and reading and has a huge heart. I'm happy to know I have impacted her life in some small way.
Q. Tell us about the "Plotmonkeys." It seems to me that you have a lot of fun together.
A. Oooh my favorite subject. Once upon a time, four authors, myself included, sold to Harlequin Temptation and met on an online author's loop. Myself. Janelle Denison, Julie Leto, and Leslie Kelly. Friendship blossomed. We had so much in common. We were all born in 1965. We all had daughters. We all sold to the same editor. And we all just clicked. We began plotting together and about a year or so ago, the idea of a group blog came up. We'd bought our daughters these cute monkeys and started calling ourselves PLOTMONKEYS. We googled and bought the URL and the rest is history. www.plotmonkeys.com is something we're so proud of because it runs seamlessly. We each have one set day a week that we blog, my blog day is Tuesday but we chat in comments all day ever day. Inevitably someone forgets or has a crisis and someone else steps in. On Fridays we each give away a prize - always a book and something fun. Sundays is the weekly funny and the prize winner is announced. And Saturdays is devoted to the four of us answering reader questions or writers tips. IT's a well oiled machine. Come visit us and don't be shy. Post in comments!
Q. Carly, you are a successful empowered woman - why do you believe romance novels are empowering for women - or are they?
A. Why thank you! I do believe romance novels are empowering for women because the woman in today's romance novel doesn't roll over for any man or person. Even if she has insecurities or issues, she is strong enough to work through them by the end of the book. Romance novels give women who work every day either in the work force or at home, with children or without, an escape from the reality of daily living. I read romance novels for the enjoyment and I take lessons from them too.
Q. And, do you feel that you have certain personality traits that have taken you the distant to become one of the most famous romance novelists?
A. Hmm. I would say the ability to persevere and to hang tough. The ability to look to the future at the same time I am making decisions for the present. And to always think of others as well as myself.
Q. Carly, why do you feel that you are a spirited woman?
A. For the same reasons I just said above. It takes spirit to conquer tough odds with no guarantees. I like to think I wake up every day and do what I do, whether it's writing or promotion, because no matter if my mood is up or down, I want MORE out of life ... whatever MORE might be, and whatever the future holds. I'm happy now so MORE is just gravy!

HOW TO PLACE A LISTING
E-mail a 60 word or less description of your listing (word count must include phone number and such) by the last day of each month (i.e. July 31 for August 1 issue) to: NancyMills@TheSpiritedWoman.com and put "LISTING BOARD" in the subject line. The same applies to photos and a JPEG (no larger than 200 pixels) is required.
All past SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP attendees receive ONE FREE 60-word listing EACH MONTH. To ad a photo it costs $15 monthly. All additional listing are $25 per item per month, and with photo $40 per month.
For those of you who have NOT attended the SPIRITED WOMAN WORKSHOP it cost $25 per listing per month or $40 with photo. Please follow the above instructions.
