It wouldn’t be the holidays without waiting forever in at least one line, so my opportunity occurred just the other day. While watching a news show on technology, the perfect gift for my husband appeared: a wireless speaker for his iPad. Not wanting to miss the chance to finally surprise him, I went right online and ordered the speaker, choosing to pick it up at the store.
Apparently, that was not the most efficient option. After receiving an email that my gift was waiting at the service desk, I stopped by to pick it up. Hmmm… they couldn’t find it. The package wasn’t under my name, wasn’t back in the inventory room or on the sales floor. The bad news is that this store was the only location with the speaker in the color I wanted. They offered a bright pink version but somehow it just didn’t vibe with my husband’s image.
After waiting 45 minutes, I was ready for a refund and doing my best imitation of Christmas cheer. Just at that moment, one of the managers located the package – sitting in plain sight on a desk. The problem was that no one expected it to be there, and so, no one saw it.
How many times does that happen? What else in our lives do we miss or fail to see because it isn’t what we expected? Perhaps it didn’t quite look like we imagined and therefore we dismissed it or continued searching even though the answer or solution was right in front of us. I can think of several times I’ve realized this situation, most of the time in hindsight.
So before this year comes to an end, what do you need to “see?” What is waiting for us to stop our busy-ness and acknowledge it? Is it a friend or loved one? Is it a project or request? Is it a dream or heart’s desire waiting to be pursued? May the upcoming New Year be the one where you find what is waiting for you in plain sight…
