The other day, I typed a message on my smartphone to a friend about exercise. If you have the auto-text feature on your phone, you may be familiar with what happened next…
As I typed “exercise” the auto-text replaced it with “exhausted.” I giggled and retyped my message – again, “exhausted” popped up. Now slightly annoyed, I typed in exercise for the third time, only to be told that the word I really wanted is apparently “exhausted.”
It made me stop and think…is my phone trying to tell me something? Does it know something I don’t? Are these holiday pounds really okay or does my phone just not want to suffer through Zumba one more time?
There are entire websites dedicated to goofy auto-text messages like this, and they are good for a laugh or two. But it does make you stop and think – how many times have we sent a message, either by phone or in person, that we just didn’t think through?
Being a spontaneous communicator famous for talking on the fly, I know the result is not always funny. And so I’m not ready to turn the annoying auto-text feature off as it has saved me more often than not. Now, if I can just figure out how to develop a human-based app to help us avoid putting our foot in our mouth…
