Laughter, smiles, dancing... these are some of the best forms of medicine. They are not what you usually expect in a hospital, because the decor of sterility and treating symptoms is usually the focus. But more and more the person as patient is being treated in a new comprehensive way. Hospitals are adding holistic healing divisions to their surgical focus. In many hospitals when you register for surgery in your pre-admission meeting you are told about their therapeutic touch specialists who will come to visit you before your surgery. Hospitals are beginning to understand that treating the whole person is vital to healing the whole person.
At Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, in Portland, Oregon they are dancing in the hospital corridors. They came up with an idea to promote breast cancer awareness. The pink glove dance was choreographed to focus on the caring hands that support breast cancer patients and their families in their treatment experience. 200 employees and several boxes of pink gloves were the starting point. When you watch the video you will see - it is their love and inspiration for new ways to connect to each other with laughter, smiles, dancing, and inspiration that makes the pink glove dance a viral sensation.
Watch the faces of each of the people throughout the hospital doing the pink glove dance. From floor cleaner, and cook, to administrator, anesthesiologist, nurses and doctors - all of them let go of the stiffness that life many times brings to adults. The pink gloves let them be in the moment... caring, connected and having fun. The pink glove dance was designed for breast cancer awareness. What it brings awareness to is that laughter, smiles, and dancing with either your feet or your mind changes how we move through our day. It transforms our life and reminds us we are all connected.
The CNN story about the idea and making of the video gives us glimpse into a hospital that knows that the old hush sterile focus of just treating symptoms is an outdated form of medicine. People who are willing to run with a crazy idea of dancing with pink gloves in a music video understand the nuances of healing.
