I got music, I got rhythm, I got my man. Who could ask for anything more? -- From song "I Got Rhythm," written by George and Ira Gershwin in 1930
Watch and listen as two phenomenal pianists, Billy Taylor and Ramsey Lewis, play the great song "I Got Rhythm" as a duet. By the end of the short video, you'll be in a better frame of mind than when you started watching, I bet. The power of jazz, of the beat, of music to uplift our spirits!
Sometimes my days are just humming along, flowing smoothly, and all's right with the world. I'm in my groove, I'm hitting my stride, I'm in sync with my natural rhythm. And then I hit a rough patch -- I get the flu, a client postpones an assignment I've been counting on, I don't seem to be able to complete a creative project as quickly as I'd hoped -- and everything seems out of whack, out of balance. You know the feeling, I'm sure.
Just as there's a definite rhythm to a musical number, so, I've come to realize, is there a definite rhythm to life. And once I can tap into that flowing and graceful rhythm, no outside distraction or disappointment bothers me, because I know it's temporary. In the larger scheme of things, everything will turn out all right.
And here's what the author Anne Morrow Lindbergh said about a loving relationship and rhythm: When the heart is flooded with love, there is no room in it for fear, for doubt, for hesitation. When each partner loves so completely that he has forgotten to ask himself whether or not he is loved in return, when he only knows that he loves and is moving to its music, then, and then only, are two people able to dance perfectly in tune to the same rhythm.
The song lyrics are right: I got rhythm! Who, indeed, could ask for anything more?
