I recently watched one of my favorite inspiring movies for women – Blue Crush. You may not have heard of it, but you should really check it out. Blue Crush stars Kate Bosworth as a aspiring professional surfer in Hawaii. The movie focuses on how she overcame a near drowning experience during a competition to hit an amazing wave during an important competition and go on to become a surfer for Billabong. Not only does it showcase a woman who fights to make her dreams come true and to regain her spirit, it puts a spotlight on one of the most magical places on earth. This movie has inspired me to once again make plans for a surfing adventure – so for those of you who want to come along for the ride (no matter your age, ability or location), here are some of the best trips to become one with the ocean:
Surf Divas in Costa Rica - The name says it all – I have been wanting to join one of these trips for a very long time! This is definitely on my list for 2010. Surf Divas started in La Jolla, CA in 1996 and now have the reputation for being one of the best surf schools for women. Their trips to Costa Rica started in 2004 and continue to be a popular women-only adventure. Plus, you get to experience the Costa Rican culture for a week. Trip packages include seven days of accommodations, local transport, meals, surf lessons, yoga sessions and a massage (plus more). I am already asking my girlfriends to do this with me!
Aloha Surfer Girls in Brazil - Ah Brazil, one place high on my list to go and now I find a surf camp in Brazil. This sounds too good to be true – seven days of exploring the beautiful, hidden beaches of Buzios in Rio De Janeiro, experiencing the Brazilian culture, morning lessons, yoga, surfing, Brazilian nightlife. The packages are reasonable and offer English speaking instructors! A must do for anyone who loves adventure and wants to experience Brazil!
Northshore Surf Girls - Speaking of Blue Crush, North Shore Surf Girls is a surf school that offers week long camps on the North Shore of Oahu. If you want to learn how to surf and be like the girls in Blue Crush (ok, maybe just the beginners), this is a great way to get there. Surf camp packages include daily lessons, overnight accommodations, breakfast, surf equipment and a night out in Waikiki. After your three hour surf lesson each day you can relax with a book, snorkel, hike or get a massage. You will experience the waves that bring surf fans all over the world to the famous North Shore.
Ok, ladies, so here are some great surfing trips…what are you waiting for? Great holiday gift to give yourself.
