What we're really talking about is a wonderful day, set aside on the fourth Thursday of November, when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving? -- Erma Bombeck, humorist/writer
Yes, we're going to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I'm talkin' turkey, plus bread stuffing, yummy gravy, blue lake snap beans, buttermilk potato puree, and cranberry chutney. And for dessert, spiced bourbon pumpkin cheesecake and pecan pie. I'm not actually making the Thanksgiving dinner -- but I sure as heck did make the dinner reservations, at a favorite restaurant! My husband and I have dealt with extremely stressful work and school situations all year, so why not treat ourselves to a holiday dinner out?
As 2009 rapidly draws to a close, I'm thinking about how much there is to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Vibrant health tops the list. Being in a loving marriage with a guy who's "just like me" in so many ways is right up at the top -- what a miracle it is that we two odd birds even met, let alone that we just celebrated our 8th anniversary! I appreciate so very much the warm home we're creating as our "nest" (continuing the bird analogy). And I'm so thankful I live in America.
I'm thankful for my dear friends, many of whom are thousands of miles away. Since it's often months, or years, between visits to some of those distant pals, we keep in touch through e-mail, letters, and phone calls. I'm so delighted that my friend Lin plans to call me from Boston this afternoon, specifically to have a "heart-to-heart" talk. We're as close as ever, though we last saw each other in-person in 2001.
Readers of a recent post know that I'm close to five of my first cousins, whom I also consider good friends. So I'm thankful for family, and especially for my stepson, who is a total surprise in my life. I never, ever dreamed I would have a stepson, and that we would get along so well.
I'm thankful for my clients and my work -- most especially for the interesting books I've edited this year, and for the several manuscripts that are slated to arrive in the next few weeks. I'm thrilled that I've gotten back into writing -- thanks to Nancy Mills for giving me the opportunity to be a member of the Spirited Woman International Blogger Team! -- and I would even like to write profiles and feature stories for magazines again.
Lastly, I'm thankful for the prospect of having so many more adventures, including travel to fascinating places, in the coming years. What are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving?
