Turkey Day is just around the corner so it’s time to start thinking about how you can serve a delicious green meal. If you can’t commit to shopping organic all year round, treat yourself this Thanksgiving and feel extra good about what you eat! Here are some GREEN Thanksgiving tips I’d like to share for all the spirited cooks out there continuing on their green journey!
- Buy an Organic Free Range Turkey: Be sure to read labels and ask your supermarket butcher if you’re having trouble finding one.
- Make sure all your Veges, Fruits, Milk, Meats, Eggs are all Organic: This includes any canned or pre-packaged items as well. The best option is to find a local farm stand or green market.
- Cut Down on How Much you Cook: Think about how much left over food you have every year. Some probably ends up going to waste even after you give some away. This year, try and cook less and just enough instead of too much. And if you have left overs, donate to a homeless shelter or family in need.
- Open the Windows: Lots of warm bodies and a warm oven can make for a hot house. Instead of running to the AC, try turning on ceiling fans and opening windows for some cross ventilation.
- Don’t Run the Water: If you are washing dishes or pots, fill the sink, soak and rinse. Do not leave the water running while you dish wash.
- Decorations: Reuse decorations from last year. No need to run out and buy another tablecloth!
- Use Paper Goods: I know it’s a celebration and you want to use the china that’s been collecting dust all year round but if you’re having a lot of guests, look into biodegradable paper or plastic plates. Easier on the earth and easier on the dishwasher and use of water!
- Turn Off the TV: Your family is finally all together so turn off the boob tube for some good old fashioned conversation or board games. And if you just can’t tear yourself away from football during the festivities, at least turn it off while your eating.
- Decrease Your Carbon Footprint: If you have to travel by car, try and get as many people in the car as possible. One less car times thousands of families cuts down on pollution, gas and time!
- Drink Organic: Buy organic wine, champagne or vodka as an accompaniment to dinner. A great organic and cheap wine is White Truck/Red Truck, Square One Vodka and Korbel Champagne. Also, don’t forget about the coffee—run to Whole Foods or Trader Joes!
