How do you live a long life? Take a two-mile walk every morning before breakfast. -- U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), who lived to be 88
Well, let's face it. The chances of my taking a two-mile walk every morning before breakfast are probably slim-to-none. However, I did set the alarm for 6 a.m. yesterday so I could get up on time to drive over to a (rare) 7:30 a.m. business meeting, held at a golf club in nearby San Rafael.
The topic at this particular breakfast meeting of our local Marin chapter of Women in Consulting was how to master the social media phenomena that are found everywhere now -- Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Yes, I've dipped my toe in the water, so to speak, as far as getting started with these three tools of 21st-century marketing - but honestly, I have a lot more to learn before I'll really feel comfortable using them.
I decided, what the hey, in the past few years I've mastered the basics of the computer, am an e-mail fanatic, send Word documents and PDFs back and forth to clients all the time -- I'm even a member of the International Blogger Team for Spirited Woman! Surely I can overcome my fear of social media and see Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter for what they are -- new, technologically advanced ways to connect with other professionals.
Well, you know what, it actually was worth it. I did learn a lot, plus I met a new prospect for my editing services, and cemented a friendship with a business colleague I didn't know very well -- all before 9 a.m.! That meeting was my version of taking a two-mile walk before breakfast.
