The Salon du Chocolat made its annual stop to Paris last weekend. This 15th edition brought in thousands of visitors and tons of delicious chocolate. It may be hard to believe that an event dedicated solely to chocolate could be worth a visit but in fact it is extremely interesting and one of the most unique events you can attend. The concept has become so popular that it has gone international. Salon du Chocolat or Chocolate Shows as they are known in the English speaking parts of the world can now be found in New York, Shanghai, Japan, Moscow, Madrid, Egypt and of course Paris, the city of its birth.
I first became acquainted with the Salon du Chocolat 12 years ago when I first moved to Paris. I am not a huge chocolate fan, though I have grown to enjoy the bittersweet treat much more since moving to Europe, but I did think it could be interesting to see an event entirely devoted to this National obsession. I was not disappointed.
The Salon du Chocolat has just about everything imaginable that deals with chocolate: cooking classes, tasting tables, chocolate awards, a kids workshop, a chocolate bookstore and of course every chocolate variety imaginable available for purchase. Ever tasted chocolate with a touch of jasmine, green apple flavored chocolate or chocolate with a twist of bergamot? They are all available for your tasting pleasure at the Salon du Chocolat.
The crowning glory of the salon though is the Defile du Chocolat (the chocolate fashion show). It is simply amazing to see! You could never imagine the magnificent creations they make with chocolate. Beautiful dresses, hats and intricate accessories are all painstakingly sculpted for the big moment. Chocolate never looked so good.
Though Paris is the birthplace of the Salon du Chocolat it is growing in popularity throughout the world and each of the other cities has equally impressive offerings on their list of events. If you live near New York City, your Chocolate Show is only one short week away so mark your calendars for the 30th of October to the 1st of November and come with a healthy appetite.
