OK, Linda, get out there and -- sparkle plenty! When I sang jazz ballads or folk songs in my high school and college musical productions, these were the words I whispered to myself to bolster my confidence just before I strode onstage. Sparkle plenty was my mantra for -- stand in the spotlight and glow, baby, glow.
Actually, the first time I encountered the words Sparkle Plenty was when I read the classic newspaper comic strip Dick Tracy. The character of Sparkle Plenty was drawn in the strip as a beautiful little girl with long blond hair; what I admired about her was that she got herself into lots of interesting adventures.
Nowadays I tend to associate "sparkling" with three things: sparkling water and wine that you order at a restaurant; the sparkling wit that I'm hoping to cultivate; and the sparkling clothes and jewelry that add so much liveliness to my wardrobe.
When I wear a dress glittering with sequins, it makes me feel that I am, literally, "lighting up the room." A necklace made of Swarovski crystals is breathtakingly beautiful. And of course, a diamond ring sparkling on my finger reminds me of the shining light in the eyes of the delightful guy who presented me with the ring.
Come to think of it, one particular pair of earrings I like to wear a lot are sparkly -- they're made of rhinestone, not diamonds -- but they're a gorgeous shade of sky blue, and catch the light, and make me feel great.
Since we're here on this earth for just a brief period, why not go all out and sparkle plenty?
In the words of the English philosopher Francis Bacon -- We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake.
