The most delightful surprise in life is to suddenly recognize your own worth. -- Maxwell Maltz, motivational speaker, author
Yesterday I was chugging along, writing e-mails, reading articles, and generally working at breakneck speed as the clock approached 5 p.m. Suddenly there was a phone call. As I hung up, I jumped up from my chair, told my husband where I was going and with whom, and waved goodbye as I raced out the door.
My spirits, which I observed had been trending into a downward spiral over the past few days (probably because I'd been watching too much awful news on TV lately) made an abrupt upward leap.
My good friend Evie, who is also a business client of mine, was on the other end of that phone call. It seems that her entire day, beginning at 8 a.m., had been one huge comedy of errors, and she was at her wit's end. Her tone was frantic, from having dealt with too many emergencies in too short a time.
She asked, in a voice that sounded extremely stressed, if I was up for heading with her IMMEDIATELY to one of our favorite local watering holes to, as we call it, "nosh 'n' slosh." Evie told me that she knew for sure that, after spending an hour with her buddy (me), talking and laughing as we always do, her natural optimism and good humor would return after the excruciating events of the day. What a lovely affirmation of the worth of our friendship! How could I resist such an invitation?
And that's exactly what happened. We sat down at the bar, each ordered a glass of Sangiovese, and shared small plates of delicious calamari and country pate on French bread. Within about twenty minutes, Evie's mood brightened and she was her old self -- and I felt terrific, too.
What delightful surprises have you experienced lately?
