Although NYC is buzzing this time of year, its mayhem over at Bryant Park. Fashion Week brings insane lines, mobs of people, long work hours and you can't find a taxi anywhere! But whether you're an editor, designer, model, volunteer, tourist or popping in for a quick show-- you are part of fashion's most highly anticipated event of the year.
I'll be attending a few shows this season and like always it's about making an impression and showcasing your style. For me, the clothes and accessories are easy--but this year I want to be eco-stylish as well! In my opinion, there is no better industry to help spread the importance of being green than fashion. And I will be doing my due diligence too!
For starters, I will not be accepting any bottled water-- even the free give-aways. I will instead carry my SIGG water bottle that I purchased at Whole Foods. If it means that I have to replenish my water supply in the bathroom via tap water than that's just what I'll have to do. It's a long week and I could potentially go through about 10-15 water bottles per day; that is a ton of plastic. The SIGG bottle is also fun looking (mine is purple polka dots) 100% recyclable and extremely light weight. It will not add extra weight to your handbag. Plus it's been proven by the FDA to contain no polycarbonate #7, a harmful plastic that has been said to leak chemicals into the bottle's ingredients.
Next, I will be carrying all of my "stuff" in a re-usable hemp tote bag rather than a one-time use plastic bag often given out by designers. It's more convenient as well as I often end up with free gifts, etc. and can easily just throw everything into one bag.
Next--- no taxis! This is a big one for me because I am often racing from one place to another and have little time or energy to walk to and from the subway. Plus, its super hot underground and during rush hour, super crowded. This Fashion Week, I will be a spirited subway superstar! This will save gas, cut down on pollution and my carbon footprint and of course, save me some cash.
Lastly, I will NOT take any printed information that is available online. Mostly everything these days is available on designer websites and if not I can simply ask that it be emailed to me. Every year, I end up sitting on my bed reading over all the information and throwing out a huge pile of garbage. So, there you have it-- my own personal eco-friendly ode to Fashion Week!
Any other suggestions for a spirited girl on the go?
