According to Dr. Deepak Chopra, a leader in the mind-body health field, it has more to do with the mind than the body. In a recent newsletter Chopra says, “If someone were to come to me for a physical exam, I’d certainly comply, but before they left I would do everything possible to put them on the right track to optimal health, which has little to do with doctors and everything to do with self-awareness and balance.”
I saw Dr. Chopra speak at a conference a few years ago and have been subscribing to his newsletter ever since. I find his teachings on health and well-being to be brilliant and wanted to share with you what he finds to be the common ingredients in the minds of physically healthy people.
Emotional adaptability. According to Deepak, this is the single most important factor in staying well and living long. The ability to let go and remain open to change instead of being stuck in your pain will free you from storing emotional toxicity that leads to imbalance and illness.
Good coping mechanisms. Acceptance and allowing events to unfold instead of resisting against the natural force of “what is” is key for your health. Resistance of the natural flow of life actually causes wear and tear on your body and accelerates the aging process.
Self-empowerment. If you see yourself as a “victim of life,” you are at a higher risk for physical and emotional illness. Knowing yourself and the essential nature of your pure potential the healthier option.
Stress reduction. Stress has an enormous negative effect on your health….especially constant long-term life stressors. Dr. Chopra believes that meditation is one of the most effective stress relief tools and that it provides other significant health benefits.
Feeling loved, wanted and useful. The healthiest people make choices to maximize the experience of all three of these feelings. He says emotional deprivation is as unhealthy as lack of good food, essential vitamins and adequate sleep.
As spirited women you already know that having healthy minds and hearts will help you have healthy bodies, it’s just nice to be reminded.

Thanks Catherine, I always enjoy your insightful words! I'm so glad you had the opportunity to see Marianne Williamson and Deepak Chopra at their last seminar--they are my two favorite spiritual teachers on the planet. What a great combination and a great message to live by.
Peace to you,
Maureen

Maureen, Beautiful!
Thank you very much for this valuable information. I can never get enough of reading or hearing these blessed messages for keeping me on the right path. Emotional balance is vital to life.
My friend and I recently went to a seminar with Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson. And besides the mention of optimal health through awareness and balance as you wrote so perfectly here. He also mentioned that: Education alone is not enough. There is perfect balance with something larger than ourselves. - We are much more than our bodies, jobs, and resumes. We must make a conscious intention in prayer or meditation for well being to make this "shift" for the whole world. And Marianne reminded us that the only problem we have is ONE: Separation from God.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, keeping our spirits high, and lighting our paths for us to stay healthy!
Truly,
Catherine nagle
