After my last blog entry about a young girl who created a beauty empire by commercializing her grandmother's home-made hair pomade, I started wondering about other beauty products that you can create yourself. Ironically, I then noticed an article in the French newspaper, Direct Soir, that covered the new trend of "do it yourself cosmetics." I actually wasn't aware that a trend was starting but I decided I wanted to do a bit more investigating on this fascinating subject. I found a plethora of information.
At the Home-Remedies-Guide.com their homemade cosmetics section is full of recipes for every beauty need: Facial Care, Hair Care, Eye Care, Hand Care...and much more. The recipes are easy and cost efficient and as the website points out: "the old-fashioned beauty recipes your granny used to make, are all natural and preservative free." What more could you ask for? Though the site does sell an eBook, there are plenty of free recipes if your scroll down to the list toward the bottom of the page.
A surprising site called Life in Italy has a wonderful collection of ideas for home-made beauty items. The recipes focus on being as natural as possible. There are such goodies as myrrh mouthwash, lemon-lavender for soft hands and recipes for making your own scents.
TreeHugger.com is a fun and interesting site that offers tips for Eco-friendly cosmetics through a video blog entry. It takes 7 minutes to watch but it is entertaining and informative, so well worth your time.
I just love the idea of creating my own cosmetics and beauty products. It reminds me a bit of being a 10 year old in the kitchen and creating such bizarre but yummy concoctions as Freakies cereal cake. Why not try out one of the recipes this coming weekend? Most are very economical and the idea of making your own completely natural products is especially interesting. Organic may have never been so much fun!
Have you already created home-made cosmetics yourself? Do you have any tips on home-made cosmetics for Spirited Woman readers? What recipes have you found that work and which don't? I would love to hear what you think about home-made versus store bought.

My daughter and myself love to spend the occasional Saturday making our own melt and pour soaps. Especially when the holidays are around the corner and we can give them away as presents. http://www.teachsoap.com/ is a great site to learn how to make your own soaps
