Though I had plenty of work to do on my short flight from Tampa to Atlanta, I can never resist picking up the airline magazine. After all, what if there is some incredible piece of information that I would miss forever if I just went straight to work on my laptop? I was especially absorbed by a special section on Charleston, South Carolina, a city that I have always wanted to visit.
The spread made me want to visit the city even more, when I stumbled upon a short write-up about Charleston-based designer Mary Norton. Mary makes magnificent fashion accessories that are not only beautiful but incredibly unique. The photo in the magazine sold me on her products and I logged on to her website shortly after I got to my hotel room. Sadly, www.marynorton.com is under construction but that didn't stop me from googling her name and finding all sorts of goodies on other sites.
Mary specializes in using exotic, unusual pieces to create handbags, shoes, scarves, etc. that are sure to get you stopped many times with demands for where you bought them. My personal favorite is a breathtaking evening bag made with long, flowing feathers. It is the kind of purse that makes you oh so glad to be a girl. Poor guys, they never get to use something this sumptuous.
Mary has only opened three of her own boutiques in LA, New York City and Charleston, so her creations are not only unique but rare as well. A few select retailers also carry her line: Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom online and hand-picked specialty stores.
The splendid line only recently began carrying Mary's own name. Since its humble beginnings over six
years ago, the brand was known as Moo Roo. Mary actually had the idea to begin her company after having a dream one night. The very next day she began creating hand bags on her dining room table. She coined the catchy name Moo Roo from the nicknames she used for her daughters Micah and Reilly. In just a few short years, Moo Roo has become known internationally with such well-known celebrities as Sharon Stone, Penelope Cruz and Queen Latifah clutching Mary's creations.
Spirited Mary believes that fashion should be fun. She has been quoted as saying that she wants each of her products to bring joy to your life and a smile to your lips along with the knowledge that you are part of making a real dream (her own and perhaps yours) come true. All that and you get to look good too!
