For New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin, a career in real estate led her down the road to romance and eventually to writing her first book.
Currently living in Missoula, Montana, Kat was born in Bakersfield, California. then went to college at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she majored in anthropology and also studied history. After graduation and determined to stay in picturesque Santa Barbara, she pursued a career in real estate, a move that would ultimately alter her life.
“I enjoyed the real estate business—I loved the camaraderie with my associates,” says the author. “And if you can match someone up with the perfect home, it’s a thrill for everyone.”
Through real estate, Kat found her own perfect match—her husband, Western author Larry Jay Martin. “We were on opposing sides of a transaction—I represented the seller and he represented the buyer,” Kat recalls.
A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he’d written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author!
“The novel was very romantic,” she admits. “but it needed some work. I was always good at grammar, so I thought I’d see if I could edit it a little. After the first two weeks, I was hooked. I began writing my own novel and now, twenty-five years and forty-five books later, I’m still at it.”
Kat moved on to become a New York Times Bestselling author of historical and contemporary romance. To date, 11 million copies of her books are in print, and she’s been published around the globe, including Germany, Norway, Sweden, China, Korea, Bulgaria, Russia, England, South Africa, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Greece.
When she’s not writing, Kat enjoys traveling, particularly in Europe, fine food and wine, and staying in fabulous hotels. Currently, she’s busy writing her next book.
